I have to ask: were you trying to be funny? I mean seriously, that was so not funny. Politics in a movie effected the viewing? Come on.... sentimentality in movies? Come on..... Dumb white trash.... that was the point. Someone's grouchy today. Nevertheless, they are your opinions.

I'm sorry, Briare Rabbit (i like your name, by the way), i really wasn't joking.

I honestly don't think The Oscars are the Gospel, or anywhere near it, when it comes to film quality. Too often- they seem to me- a celebration of ignorance, mediocrity and values i don't hold dear (sentimentality and brash epic size). I should add that i'd give almost identical scores tomorrow. On the Waterfront (a well made and acted film, no doubt) i dislike for its shameful hypocrisy; an excuse for Kazan's HUAC name-giving disguised as a lesson in moral responsibility.

There are loads of annual film awards throughout the world which are as valid as The Oscars. Yet all too often judgments are influenced by the Oscars' stamp of approval. My hatchet job in cutting a few overgrown idols down to size is genuinely intended. :( :o : :p

Oh ok... (glad you like my name ;)) all I as saying was that I liked Rocky to a certain extent, and On the Waterfront to an even more one... some of the movies you gave incredibly low scores to I thought were very good, but as you can see, I was a little brash too. The point is, none of the Oscar winners I think are bad. I think the lowest from the ones Ive seen were the 6/10's givens to Kramer vs. Kramer and Shakespear in Love. Anyway, like I said, not trying to offend anyone here.

It's newbie hunting time. Heh heh heh....

Wow picky are we? I really don't see how anyone can give Gone with the Wind a *. Even if you hated it, the movie is at least deserving of a 5/10 considering it is arguably the most important motion picture ever made. Technical aspects, not to mention the acting is undeniably terrific. Kids these days...

DEFINITELY "ARGUABLY" the most important motion picture ever made. If by importance you mean how much it influenced, the "BEST" would be something like "Breathless" or "Man With a Movie Camera". GWTW basically influenced melodramatic dumbed down Oscar-bate crap.

Also, I don't rate the movies based on how much I think they are important (which is rather pointless, really), but on how much I enjoyed them, so 1 star would be more than apropriate.

Not really. **1/2 means I enjoyed the movies even if I found them extremely flawed in some aspects, so it's not a "bad" rating.

Oh, and I messed it up; "Casablanca" is actually a **1/2 too.

Dumbed down oscar crap? That doesn't make ANY sense what so ever... It was an epic, about a very dark time in history- based on a book. Ever read one? Gone with the Wind was conceived not to be an Oscar winner- but to be very sucessful. To be the greatest picture ever- and suceeded wonderfully.

Sorry, but if it was "conceived to be the greatest picture ever" that makes me hate it even more. Talk about some damn humility, hun?!

GWTW was the greatest motion picture event up to that time, and I dare say it hasn’t been matched since. Some people, and you seem to be one of them, have a problem with these types of movies, and that’s all fine. But – just because the filmmakers set a out to make “the biggest movie ever” and succeeded in doing so (still holds 1st place in sold theater tickets;10 Oscars and undoubtedly the most widely recognized and beloved movie ever) - does not mean the movie is completely devoid of any artistic merit.
I’m not trying to change your mind about GWTW, as that would of course be both pointless and impossible. But melodramatic epics such as GWTW, that so many film snobs are quick to scorn, are NOT by default inferior to small, character driven pieces. Personally (and I know I’m speaking for a lot of other GWTW fans here), part of the reason I love GWTW so much is its unashamedly overblown style – watching GWTW you can tell it knows it is the biggest movie ever, it’s not apologizing for it for one second. This is what makes the movie so entertaining (of course there is a lot more to its appeal than just pure entertainment, but I won’t go into that here). You call it a lack of humility – I say it’s the movie justifiably having a sense of its own grandness. Nothing wrong with knowing your own worth.

I forgive him because his avatar rocks ;).

1988: Rain Man
1991: The Silence of the Lambs (8/10 or B+)

2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (5/10 or C-)

Some of them are not rated because I haven't seen them in a long time. Braveheart and Schindler's List are two movies I have never been able to finish. Braveheart because it bores me and I find every second of it pretentious crap and Schindler's List because it's too hard to watch. I'm planning to watch both of this movies soon though.

In his opinion, sansho meant the ones he thought that actually deserved their 'Best Picture' awards.
