They're both great composers , geniouses I may add.
But although John Williams gave us memorable tunes like 'The Imperial March, 'The Superman Theme' and 'Indiana Jones' , I consider Hans Zimmer a better composer.
He has proven he can handle every genre form action like 'The Rock' to drama like 'The Thin Red Line'.
And if you listen to scores like 'Backdraft', 'Prince of Egypt' and 'Crimson Tide' , I think you will agree with me.
Also I think Hans Zimmer was robbed of an oscar back in 2001 ;
'Gladiator' deserved to win an oscar for 'Best Music, Original Score
' and not 'Crouching Tiger' !!

I don't believe there has ever been a better film composer than John Williams, nor will there ever be one.

Zimmer by far. I dislike most of Williams' stuff.

Williams. In the future, if there is no elitist snobbery, Philharmonic Orchestra's will play his music. Zimmer is okay, too.

This is a hard call. I love them equally, but if I was FORCED to choose, I'd say John Williams. My real favorite is Jerry Goldsmith though.

I think John Williams makes scores that can work within the context of the film and outside it as well. Zimmer's material (IMO) only works while you're watching the flick.

John Williams provided us with tunes that became classic - Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, etc. - and if i were to say i dont like them i would be crazy coz they are excellent.... BUT ..... not my cup of tea.

Zimmer, who hasn't proved himself the master like Williams, has provided tunes that i would listen to more often than Williams: Badlands or True Romance (same tune), 'Now We Are Free' from Gladiator (although this is the only excellent song and CTHD should of won the oscar). Thin Red Line has the amazing chants but i dont know if this is Zimmer.

Anyway,

my favorite composer of all time is:

ENNIO MORRICONE

by far. I will never ever get bored of his stuff.

I don't agree with that.
All the popular trailers use material from Hans Zimmer ! And here (in Belgium) there are several televisionshows that use a lot of Zimmer-music , like 'Expedition Robinson'.
I always listen to 'The Rock' when I'm working out, it gets me more pumped up. So I think Zimmer's music is very enjoyable on it's own.

As of right now, Williams, but let's give Zimmer another 15 years and then bring this poll back.

I think they're both equally good.

Well, I guess that some of his lighter, more playful scores -- like what he made for Indiana Jones -- are good, but most of his music is really pompous, sentimental and self-repetitive, not up my alley.

Zimmer seems to be able to keep up a good quality; I've liked most of his stuff, and his scores, unlike Williams', have never irritated me.

Right now, I'd saw Williams, since at this time he seems to be the more adventurous of the two (at least when he's not scoring "Star Wars" or "Harry Potter" films), but several years ago I believe Zimmer had the edge. A toss-up, since I love both composers. Zimmer's been more inspiring for me though.
