Monkeybone
"Get Boned!"
Starring: Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, Chris Kattan, Rose McGowan, John Turturro (Voice), Dave Foley, Megan Mullally, and Whoppi Goldberg.
Directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James & The Giant Peach)

Upon the first ten minutes of the film, I believed that this film was complete and utter crap. My friend, and prior fan of the film, however, insisted that we leave it on. He knows my taste, and he said that I would love it. To say the least, he was 100% correct.
Monkeybone is an incredible visual journey - stylish, imaginative, creative, original, extremely colorful and yet very dark, sinister, creepy, and at times quite scary.
The director, Henry Selick, who is often overshadowed by Tim Burton (when you think of The Nightmare Before Christmas, the first name that comes to mind is Burton. However, he is only the producer - Selick is the man who directed that modern cinematic masterpiece.) His awesome visual style gets to be shown to its full extent here, and it is a great thing to witness.
The other part of this film that makes it such a joy to watch, is its often hilarious comedy. Chris Kattan is a prefect example of well-executed comedy at its finest. It is a bit silly at times, though the unique visuals that Sellick has created outshines this.
Brendan Fraser, a man who I think does not always get his due, is a joy to watch here - he is funny, and he is the perfect man to carry the film.
Rose McGowan, who plays Kitty, is quite stunning. Let's just say that she really shines in the scene where Monkeybone dives into her cleavage. She really tickled me pink.
The only thing that really bothered me is Monkeybone himself, who is often funny, but he does become overbaring at times (annoying, stupid, etc.).
Also to be noted is how original this idea actually is. The inclusion of dreams, nightmares, and other such things that happen within ones head is a great idea that makes this film flow.
This is not a great film by any means, but its visual style, great characters, and awesome sense of humor make it a great film to watch. Contrary to my initial thoughts, I will be purchasing this dvd immediately.

Using my new rating system: 8.5/10

Mokneybone is an amusing film with decent acting, a cool idea, but the part of it I TRULY loved are the visuals in the coma city. WOW! Dark, fun, and beauitful in an offbeat way. Eye candy at it's purest form!

I'll watch the movie again just for the effects. I don't exactly like the movie, but it is alright.

I love the visuals. Hate the silliness. Nightmare visuals win out. 7/10

I'm not sure why, but I have such a findness for the artistry in this movie, but the laughs are just not there. Very disapointing I must say. My score for this film is [B]5/10[/], yet it is in my DVD collection and it always will be and I will watch it multiple times. A weird exception, I know.

Monkey Bone - (7/10)
Info: (2001) PG-13, Brendan Fraiser, Bridget Fonda, Chris Kattan
Genre: Animation/Fantasy/Comedy
Comments: Monkeybone is a little dark comedy that is visually stunning and is very reminiscent of Nightmare Before Christmas. In a coma, a cartoonist finds himself trapped within his own underground creation and must find a way to get back, while racing against his popular but treacherous character, Monkeybone, who takes over his body. Its a hard concept to understand. The movie is very wacky. Its sometimes weird, sometimes lighthearted and sometimes downright scary like in the surgery dream scenes. The visuals are amazing. The animations are very good. The look of Coma World is really eerie but at the same time good eye candy. The acting is really solid. Fraiser and Fonda do a good job playing off each other. The story is hit or miss. It's very original and it had me by the balls the whole way. I didn't overly enjoy it though. When Chris Kattan's character was introduced, I began to think the movie was going overboard. The one thing that really brings the movie down is that there really are only a few laughs. It's a wacky dark comedy without much comedy. I will admit I laughed at some of stuff but not that much. The film is best admired for its artistry, fine acting, and insanely original and wacky concept. I can't openly recommend this film because you really have to like this style, but I will say it's a solid rental.

Acting - 7/10 (Brendan Fraiser is at his best here while even the smaller roles such as Whoopie Goldberg shine.)
Violence/Gore - 4/10 (Some disturbing images and guts.)
T/A - 2/10 (Dave Foley's ass.)

Actually, Burton created the characters and the wonderful story for Nightmare too.
