Monkeybone
"Get Boned!"
Starring: Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, Chris Kattan, Rose McGowan, John Turturro (Voice), Dave Foley, Megan Mullally, and Whoppi Goldberg.
Directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James & The Giant Peach)
Upon the first ten minutes of the film, I believed that this film was complete and utter crap. My friend, and prior fan of the film, however, insisted that we leave it on. He knows my taste, and he said that I would love it. To say the least, he was 100% correct.
Monkeybone is an incredible visual journey - stylish, imaginative, creative, original, extremely colorful and yet very dark, sinister, creepy, and at times quite scary.
The director, Henry Selick, who is often overshadowed by Tim Burton (when you think of The Nightmare Before Christmas, the first name that comes to mind is Burton. However, he is only the producer - Selick is the man who directed that modern cinematic masterpiece.) His awesome visual style gets to be shown to its full extent here, and it is a great thing to witness.
The other part of this film that makes it such a joy to watch, is its often hilarious comedy. Chris Kattan is a prefect example of well-executed comedy at its finest. It is a bit silly at times, though the unique visuals that Sellick has created outshines this.
Brendan Fraser, a man who I think does not always get his due, is a joy to watch here - he is funny, and he is the perfect man to carry the film.
Rose McGowan, who plays Kitty, is quite stunning. Let's just say that she really shines in the scene where Monkeybone dives into her cleavage. She really tickled me pink.
The only thing that really bothered me is Monkeybone himself, who is often funny, but he does become overbaring at times (annoying, stupid, etc.).
Also to be noted is how original this idea actually is. The inclusion of dreams, nightmares, and other such things that happen within ones head is a great idea that makes this film flow.
This is not a great film by any means, but its visual style, great characters, and awesome sense of humor make it a great film to watch. Contrary to my initial thoughts, I will be purchasing this dvd immediately.
Using my new rating system: 8.5/10
