"Spy Kids:Special Edition" bombed like I expected and "American Pie 2" or "Osmosis Jones" have not hit yet. Dimension will get more cash from "The Others" this weekend.

Before Friday arrives which it did already, Rush Hour 2 made more than 100 million dollars in one week. That means it made more than Planet of the Apes on its first week making 97 million, and Jurassic Park 3 making 93 million the first week. JP3 includes its wednesday and thursday amounts too. So so far this summer the most successful opening week movies are:
1. Rush Hour 2 - 102 million
2. Planet of the Apes - 97 million
3. The Mummy Returns - 95 million
4. Jurrassic Park 3 - 93 million.
Now that American Pie 2 will be competing and everyone is hoping it will make 60 something million like the past 2 weeks of films we just have to see if it will be in this top 4 list.
This weekend should turn out like so-
1. American Pie 2 - 51 million
2. Rush Hour 2 - 42 million
3. The Others - 28 million
4. The Princess Diaries - 15 million
5. Planet of the Apes - 11 million
6. Jurassic Park 3 - 7.5 million
7. Osmosis Jones - 6 million
8. Spy Kids special - 5 million
9. Americas Sweethearts - 3 million
10. Legally Blonde - 2.1 million
I doubt THE OTHERS will make 28 Million, it's not even playing on 2000 screens... Rush Hour 2 will probably drop to around 30 Million.

I know it made a lot of (undeserved) money! And I did not say it did not! I just said I expected the special edition to not make much money!
My Guesstimates:
1. AMERICAN PIE 2 - $45 mil.
2. RUSH HOUR 2 - $40 mil.
3. PRINCESS DIARIES - $16 mil.
4. PLANET OF THE APES - $14 mil.
5. THE OTHERS - $11 mil.
6. OSMOSIS JONES - $7 mil.
7. JURASSIC PARK 3 - $6 mil.
8. SPY KIDS - $5 mil.
9. AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS - $4 mil.
10. THE SCORE - $3.7 mil.
11. LEGALLY BLONDE - $3.5 mil.
12. ORIGINAL SIN - $2.8 mil.
Note: THE SCORE will benefit from Saturday's sneak previews of RAT RACE, which they're showing twice. From my understanding, whenever a studio holds a sneak preview, the money goes to the movie it pre-empts.

I think American Pie 2 will make more than $50 million. I loved every minute of it. I give it a 8/10. It will be number one, but if the show continues to sell it like I've seen it doing around here, Reading PA, then it might make a bit more. We'll see, eh?
BTW ... for those of you who saw it - how'd you like Stifler's party? Gotta love that wine?

It should do decent business based on Friday's estimates: http://showbizdata.com/
It should make around $15 million over the weekend.

Ya Know, I really thought Osmosis Jones would do some business, even though it was the underdog and there wasn't much consumer interest. I just thought it might make money but I guess when people aren't interested, hey, they just aren't interested. I'm not surprised by AP2, everyone knew it was going to make a lot of money, because they were all seeing it. I'm also disappointed by The Others, I thought it would do better but it won't. One thing I'm glad about is POTA falling as it rightfully should. It shouldn't have made that much money. It is one of the worst movies of the summer.
Of course AP2 made tons more money than "The Others." It's playing on a lot more screens. I arrived too late to see "The Others" and there weren't any other screens it was playing on. American Pie, however, was on three screens. Grrrrrrr.....teenaged summer crap.
Kici,
American Pie 2 was very good. It might not be your kind of movie, but that doesn't mean that it isn't worthy, because it is. And the reason why American Pie 2 is on more screens is because they knew it would make money--- and you know what--- IT IS!!!
THIS WEEKENDS BOX OFFICE!!!
1. American Pie 2/ 45.1 million
2. Rush Hour 2/ 31.5 million
3. The Princess Diaries/ 14.1 million
4. The Others/ 13.6 million
5. Planet of the Apes/ 13.3 million
6. Jurassic Park III/ 7.3 million
7. Osmosis Jones/ 5.6 million
8. America's Sweethearts/ 4.6 million
9. Legally Blonde/ 3.8 million
10. Original Sin/ 3.1 million

Well, I knew that's what it'd be except for The Princess Diaries beating the Others???!!!
I should've known that the Others wouldn't be real big because less than 30 people were in the theatre when I saw it(and that includes me!)

Nice, that would mean American Pie 2 has the title of largest opening for an R-rated film ever right? Cuz Scary Movie used to hold that title at 42 million I think. Bring on Pie 3.
Well, maybe for a comedy anyway. Because didn't HANNIBAL open bigger...
By the way... 11 and 12 are:
11. THE SCORE/ 2,950,000
12. SPY KIDS/ 1,427,000
Just because it makes more money doesn't mean it's better.
Sorry. I saw AP on video. It was cute. I laughed, but eight bucks for another one? No. To each their own. AP2 just doesn't happen to be one of my own. I'd rather see a ghost story for grown ups.

The Others didn't debut greatly, but still.... it's 8 grand per theater average, and it expands into more theaters next week. Plus, good word of mouth. Hopefully it'll win 50 million.

This is such bullshit. All those teenyboppers who went to go see American Pie 2 deserve to be dragged out into the street and shot like the dogs they are. The Others was much better and it DESERVED to do better than American Pie 2.

D'oh! Don't I feel like the perfect fool.
But it's the second biggest opening for an R rated comedy...
And Lazycouch,
that's bullshit. Did you ever think that the people that went to see American Pie 2 were looking for a comedy and not a mystery. And also the previews for The Others pretty much sucked and it looked corny not scary. When I saw the previews for The Others I laughed, it looked like a crappy ghost story. Then I read Arrow and Joblo's reviews of it and it made me want to see it more. But I saw American Pie 2 because I was looking for a fun comedy and to have a good time, and that's exactly what I did. I've heard The Others is kind of boring and you wait forever for something to happen, and that's not how I want to spend my money and time at the movies. Only if there's nothing better to see. Plus, there's two theatres where I live and one has 11 movies playing and the other has 3 movies. And The Others wasn't playing at either of them. So I didn't have a choice, but even if I would've I still would have seen American Pie 2. And it's not a bunch of teenyboppers going. Where I went their was a lot of people in their late 20's, 30's, 40's, and even 50's. They weren't letting younger people in. When I got tickets they were making you show them ID and a lot of teenagers were getting turned away. And then when we went to go to the screen American Pie 2 was showing on they had two people gaurding the door and checking ID's and tickets. It was like I was trying to get into a club... Not just teenyboppers saw American Pie 2, I think people of all ages (except little kids, unless with an adult) went to see American Pie 2... And it was a real fun time. It was obvious The Others wouldn't make even close to as much money as AP2. I do, however think with good word of mouth and it being expanded into more theatres it will hold up well over the weeks.
And American Pie 2 should also hold up well with good word of mouth. It all depends on the type of movie and how it's advertised. And since American Pie was a big hit and a lot of people loved it, it was obvious American Pie 2 would make more at the box office.
Maybe the people that saw THE OTHERS should be dragged out into the street and shot. Ok, I don't feel that way but I don't think you should be throwing comments around like "All the teenyboppers that went to see American Pie 2 should be brought out into the street and shot."
That's pretty stupid...

"The Others" did great. Many box office forcasters thought it would be lucky to reach 7 million and it got 13 million. Plus Dimension Pictures is adding it to 500 more theatres next Friday which should bump up sales up at least 15%. Plus it has a got a blessing that films like "The Blair Witch Project" and "The Sixth Sense" had: good word of mouth. "American Pie 2" should drop 50% or so because most saw it opening weekend and will not revisit the theatres with films like "American Outlaws" and "Rat Race" challenging it. If there is a film we should cry over it is "Osmosis Jones". If the WB blew more than 10 million on the film(which they did) they are introuble.

Sorry about the double post.
I think American Pie 2 will hold up well this next weekend and will stay at #1. The reason why is because a lot of people will see it again and good word of mouth will get other people out to see it as well. I know I want to see it again and I think I will, maybe a couple more times. Plus, nothing opening next weekend is a real threat to it, so it should hold up fine...
Well, here are the final weekend figures: http://movies.yahoo.com/hv/boxoffice-latest.html
I saw both AMERICAN PIE 2 and THE OTHERS. I don't think that either one will hold up well the next weekend. AP2, however, will remain #1 by default. There's no real contender out there. I snuck in to see RAT RACE and my friend and I walked out after half an hour. Not funny. It probably got funnier after we left, but it was late and we were movied out. Anyway, the theater was was only a third full (hence, THE SCORE's weekend take was less than expected). It's hard to predict how RAT RACE will do. I guess it'll depend on the reviews, which would be mixed at best. TIme Magazine just gave it an enthusiastic review. AMERICAN OUTLAWS will take away some of AP2's teen audience, but not much. CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN will take a huge bite out of THE OTHERS' adult audience, however. AP2 will continue the trend of huge second week drops. Even with the addition of more theaters, I expect THE OTHERS to drop by as much as 30%. Here are my guesstimates:
AP2 - $23.50 mil.
RAT RACE - $18 mil.
RUSH HOUR 2 - $17 mil.
CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN - $16 mil.
THE OTHERS - $10 mil.
THE PRINCESS DIARIES - $9 mil.
AMERICAN OUTLAWS - $8.5 mil.
PLANET OF THE APES - $7 mil.
JP3 - $4 mil.
AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS - $2.7
LEGALLY BLONDE - $2.6 mil.
THE SCORE - $2.3
OSMOSIS JONES - 2.1 mil.
This may be a duplicate message. The first one didn't seem to go through.
Saw both AP2 and THE OTHERS (both rentals, imo). With the supposed addition of 500 theaters, THE OTHERS should hold up better than AP2 next weekend. Still, I see a 30% drop. Word-of-mouth is mixed, at best. Also, CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN will take a huge bite out of its adult audience. AP2 will continue the trend of huge second week drops, but it should remain #1 by default. I don't see a real contender out there. It's tough to predict how well RAT RACE is going to do. Snuck in to see the sneak (the theater was only a third full; hence, the lower than expected score for THE SCORE). We walked out half hour later. Not funny. But Time Magazine just gave it an enthusiastic review. So we'll see. Here are my guesstimates for next weekend:
AP2 - $23 mil.
RAT RACE - $18 mil.
RH3 - $17 mil.
CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN - $16 mil.
THE OTHERS - $10 mil.
THE PRINCESS DIARIES - $9 mil.
AMERICAN OUTLAWS - $8.5 mil.
PLANET OF THE APES - %7.5 mil.
JP3 - $4.5 mil.
AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS - $2.8 mil.
LEGALLY BLONDE - $$2.7 mil.
THE SCORE - $2.4 mil.
OSMOSIS JONES - $2.2 mil.
