I don't mean to be rude, but this topic is strictly for those who are going to choose one movie only, not an endless list of your favorite special effects in a variety of movies. Don't even list your runners-up!

My choice: TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.

Forget TITANIC, James Cameron's masterpiece was this stylish, stunning, spectacular film that boasts the best visual effects, stunts and sound FX in recent or distant memory.

I agree, T2 all the way.

I have to go with the 2nd installment in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day took special effects to a new level. It was way ahead of its time. That's my pick.

If this is about pure special effects then it's got to be Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. It doesn't matter what you think about the movie, it was pure eye candy. Too bad it failed to accomplish anything.

I'm sure someone else will mention a film from 1977. Don't forget that one.

2001: A Space Odyssey easily, the best, most realistic and ageless special effects ever. Definetly my sole pick.

Though the two recent Star Wars installments, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, and the original Jurassic Park are also top fucking shelf. The LOTR movies look fake and too obviously CGI for me.

There is some good special F/X out there today, but recently we've been seeing crappy cartoonish F/X that ruin the whole feel.

Anyway, without a doubt...

2001: A SPACE OYDSSEY

Even though the film was made back in '68, it easily can top the F/X that are about today.

Jurassic Park. To re-create a species that has not been around for millions of years, and make them look so real, scary, and essentially perfect (as far as we know) is something that has not yet been matched.

I have to go with T2, it took the morphing FX to a whole new level.

What he said. Easily the most recognisably ground-breaking movie for spesh FX.

Wow, I can't believe almost EVERYBODY has actually stuck to the one vote per person rule. :)

Definitely Jurassic Park, not a doubt in my mind.

I thought Deep Impact was great. Seeing that big tidal wave on the big screen was incredible. Looked incredibly real too.

My thoughts exactly....

Jurassic Park was and still is the most amazing feat accomplished by any special fx team.

Jurrasic Park utterly BLEW MY MIND the first time i saw it. Ive seen many movies like The Matrix, Sat Wars, and the Terminator films but nothing has ever made me sit up and take notice like that film.

Ill put it this way, when i watched those other movies i thought "wow, those are cool special effects!" but when i watched Jurrasic Park i completely thought those were real dinos on the screen. I could not believe they were puppets and cgi.

Hard to say for me.

As far as most ground breaking and incredible for its time... My vote goes to the original King Kong. Willis O'Brien had done stuff like it before in The Lost World, but not nearly to that level. The effects in it stand equal or better to anything of its kind for a long... Long time.

I'll bend the rules a bit. :D

As far as one PARTICULAR visual effect scene in a movie goes, it would be the explosion of something near and dear to Morpheus' heart in 'Reloaded', as well as the Spiders in 'Minority Report' and some of the face shots of Gollum in "Two Towers'... ALL EQUALLY, because they were pretty much flawless.

As far as best visual effects stretched out over an entire movie, it's 'Jurassic Park'.

2001 A Space Odyssey

but others that are amazing:

A.I.
Matrix movies
Terminator
Jurassik Park
LOTR (gollum, the water, the underworld...excellent)

T2: Judgment Day - not only were they groundbreaking back in '91, but they hold up remarkably well even today. They're probably even better than most FX of movies today. Technically they may not be better, but they were pulled off masterfully and I was never taken out of the movie at any time because the FX "looked fake." And I still don't know how they did some things, like the T1000 morphing in the kitchen.

Jurassic Park. This is actually a hard category, since do you choose the ones that had the best looking (but know are SFX)? Or the ones that suited the story best? Or other? JP is my pick, since they didn't start getting too show-offy like a usual Stephen Sommers would, and can make you generally believe these people are being hunted by dinosaurs. My pick for Best SFX

Yeah, I'll go with that.

I think that some people's votes for 2001 are influenced by their love of the film. I mean, I like 2001 WAY more than TTT, but I think it's a joke to say that there was something in 2001 that looked more realistic than Gollum.

"2001: A Space Odyssey," because 35 years after the movie's release, the FX are as fresh and powerful as ever.

Best effects ever: RED SONJA. I mean, that metal snake thing...sheer beauty...

Just kidding, BTW. :D

The best display of special effects I've seen in a flick, among many great choices that are close runners-up, has to be THE MATRIX; before the techniques became parodied and mocked, they were pretty damn awesome.

Speilberg's best film uses the perfect amout of FX and they all look amazingly gothic and beautiful.

Jurassic Park was amazing! And they didn't even rely on the fake-CGI that the Matrix, Harry Potter, Spider-Man, and the Hulk are all using. I hate bad CGI!!! But anyways, Jurassic Park is great - they created a whole world down to the wrinkles under the T-Rex's eyes.
