The Italian Job was a smooth running aciton-packed film which managed my attention completely. Being a heist movie, (one of my favorite types) it managed to be surprisingly creative and original. I enjoyed the fact that the whole heist (both of them actually) was pulled off without guns or physical violence, which proves you don't need manslaughter to make it a intersting movie.

I was looking forward to this movie and had some high expectations (especially since i now LOVE caper movies, after my viewing of Confidence (10/10)), but this movie was a huge disappointment.

This was a very boring movie, straight up. The last 20 minutes were pretty good with a cool carchase and a nice little con but the rest of the movie was totally tiring, and im not a guy who just think that talking makes a movie boring. I loved Memento, Confidence, The Others, Pulp Fiction, and all of those were pretty much just talk. But this flick didn't do it for me. I didnt give a shit for any of the characters, other than the always stylish and kickass Jason Staham. I am a huge Seth Green fan, but man was he given cheesy and unfunny lines in this film. wow.

On the whole, this movie was pretty boring, uniteresting, but had some cool characters, a decent plot, good directing, and a pretty good climax. But im afraid all of those good point cant make up for an hour and a half of boringness(is that a word?).

4/10

hold on i just have to mention something to everybody that im sure some people in the movie probably saw, and to people who havent seen the movie...u need to see this!

MINOR SPOILERS*okay...there is a part in the movie (around the end), where they are trying to steal this truck with money. The truck gets blown down to the subway track and while everyone on the ground is running around....i swear to god... that i saw a shot of SPIDERMAN! I am not joking! If you do not blink during that scene, i swear you will see him, you cant miss him. My friend saw him too, and we were dumbfounded of its randomness. The clip is about half a second and you see someone in a SPIDERMAN scurrying around the camera. WEIRD SHIT!!

My Review of The Italian Job

In Short:a very cool ensemble heist flic

The Good: Let me start by saying i love heist movies, and the colorfull characters that pull them off.And i actually think this one was better than Ocean's Eleven(2001),and heres why, though i found Oceans 11 to be charming and cool, the caper lacked flaws, true it had a great assortment of characters but the characters basically walked away with the loot unscathed. Not the case with The Italian Job.People die, people want revenge, people are double crossed and i like that element in my caper movies.Which is why i like flics like Heist (2001) and Sneakers (1992) i think youre more involved when you feel the characters may get caught,or there is a sense of danger.Mark Wahlberg as Charlie Croker does a great job keeping everything together,Charlize Theron as Stella Bridger i really found her character to be believable, her longing for revenge i loved her ever since The Devils Advocate.Edward Norton as Steve Frezelli ,Norton is such a great actor and i love when he potrays villains he does a great job here, which is why i wonder why he tried to walk away from this movie, and get out of his 3 picture deal with Paramount?!? Mos Def is becoming one of my favorite actors,as i have stated before he and Queen Latifah were the best things about last years Brown Sugar.Jason Statham as Handsome Rob always brings a great sense of confidence to his roles,he was great in his solo flic The Transporter,i like him in ensemble pieces also.Seth Green as Lyle is just a fun character,i loved his running gag about Napster.Everyone just looks like there having a good time.

The Bad: Some scenes felt a little drawn out,and should have been better edited. The romance between two of the characters did seem to be tacked on.

All in all not a bad time at the movies its one of those movies in which you wish to see the charaters again.Scale of 1-10 an 8

This movie is fun as hell! it's also great to see Jason Statham (who I call the British Bruce Willis) get some good film roles lately. F. Gary Gray really knows how to make a great action flick. I enjoyed this just as much as his other great flick--THE NEGOTIATOR.

I saw SPIDERMAN too!!! What the fuck was that about? It's not the same studio or anything???

5/10

I only saw this for Jason Statham, and he was awesome. Norton, Green, and Def were pretty fun, but I was disapointed with the lack of jokes. There was only one REALLY funny part (When Lyle mimics Rob and Rebeca), but thats it reallly, and the whole ending was really lame, and too easy. I wanted more TENSION!!

Oh well, I still had fun.

There are some good scenes in this movie but overall it falls way short of the original. Invest some money into original ideas and stop trying to butcher classics PLEASE!!!!!!!!! will anyone listen to this plea, alas probably no.

The Italian Job Review
©reel-reviews.net
Rated PG 13 Running time 104 minutes

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, Jasan Statham, Mos Def, Edward Norton, and Donald Sutherland

Directed by Gary Gray based on the 1969 film of the same name.

I'm fast becoming an action flick fan. Action flicks can be dismal, but when they are good they really entertain. Take, for instance, last year's The Truth About Charlie, which I also liked a lot. That film, like The Italian Job, was a superior remake of a mediocre film. That film, like The Italian Job, also starred Mark Wahlberg, who is fast becoming a bit of a surprise phenomenon. I really thought this guy had flash in the pan written all over him but I am charmed to find I am wrong. It also stars Charlize Theron, who sparkles just enough without losing her edginess. And of course there's Seth Green, who is adorable as the geek, and Jasan Statham, another up-and-comer. He dazzled in another very good action flick last year, The Transporter.

What we get in The Italian Job is a sort of action film math equation: Take The Transporter, The Truth About Charlie, and just a dab of Ocean's 11. Smush em all together and you get a sense of this film.

The plot follows a gang of very talented thieves who steal 35 million in gold bullion from a private home in Venice. The job goes off with nary a hitch, the gang re-groups in Austria, and just when it looks like everyone's dreams have come true one of the group takes out the aging father figure and sage, played with sentimental subtlety by Donald Sutherland, and believes he has killed the others, as well.

Not so, and of course, the remaining four regroup and, enlisting the help of their fallen mentor's daughter, plan to get the gold back. But this job is not about the gold, as Mark Wahlberg's Charlie points out. It's about payback.

It is said that Edward Norton took this job under protest because he had a contractual obligation to Paramount. If that is so he should do more films under the gun. He was a perfect embittered weasel in The Italian Job, and Mark Wahlberg was the perfect honest thief. Mos Def, Seth Green, and Jasan Statham provided wonderful backup with humor, comraderie, and realism. I believed this group of guys would work together well.

The plot is predictable and the only real surprise in the film has been given away in all the trailers and advertisements, something I will never understand about Hollywood. It has to be stupidity, it can't possibly be planned. I was a little disappointed that the tension and animosity between Handsome Rob (Jasan Statham) and Stella Bridger (Charlize Theron) wasn't highlighted a little more. The pace of the film was fast enough that it could have handled a bit of banter between the two.

But for the most part this is a wonderful caper film: gold gets stolen, gold gets gone, gold gets got again and bad guys get an ass whuppin. Lots of cool mini-coopers zooming around Los Angeles. Lots of neat high tech hacking. Lots of running jokes, like the Napster bit, that made me grin and laugh out loud. I really liked this movie. Check it out, perfect date movie, the cute guys outnumber the women but the cars will keep the guys occupied. (Sorry guys... just a little joke ;) )

The Italian Job is a fun, exciting and just an overall enjoyable remake of the 1969 classic of the same name, starring Michael Caine. Let me just say that I am a huge fan of heist movies. I love the idea of that daring heist that can make you rich or send you up the river...the flare and style in which these movies present themselves...and the colorful characters they have to bring together to make these daring attempts and high-risk/reward robbery so much fun. I'm just a sucker for these type of movies and always will be. Still this is a very fun and enjoyable film...it borrows nicely from the source material yet is still original enough and is not just a carbon copy of the original film. Mark Wahlberg plays Charlie Croker, the leader of this bunch of thieves, which include Donald Sutherland as John Bridger, a father figure of sorts to Charlie, Jason Statham as Handsome Rob, a getaway driver, Seth Green as Lyle, the computer expert and supposedly the inventor of Napster!lol...we also have Mos Def as Left Ear, a demolitions expert and then there is Edward Norton as Steve, what his expertise is besides screwing his partners I don't know. The plot involves these guys all pulling off an exciting and daring heist of $35 million in gold in Venice, Italy. If you have seen the trailer or the film...you naturally know that Steve double-crosses everyone and takes the gold for himself. About a year later the team track him down in Los Angeles...the plan is to steal his gold and get revenge. Charlize Theron plays Stella Bridger, who plays a professional safe-cracker, who is brought on board the team to help and has very good reasons for revenge herself. My only real complaint about the original is that besides Michael Caine there are no other characters who we care about, we don't even really know their names...so there is no life breathed into them at all. In this update all the characters are wonderfully played out and they are all fun and interesting. My two favorites were Jason Statham as Handsome Rob...I just love this dude in general...he's just so cool and tough yet funny with that English wit. Then there is Seth Green as Lyle....also just very good and being funny, but the whole thing with Napster was funny every time and there is a great scene when he mimics handsome Rob chatting up a cable girl called Becky. Another one of my favorite scenes was the little montage of when everybody was younger and how they got their start in their field of expertise. Just little fun stuff like that made it so enjoyable. Of course what The Italian Job is most famous for is the car chase involving the 3 mini's in and around the city of Turin. Again we have the 3 mini's for a fun and inventive car chase in the crowded streets of Los Angeles. This movie proves you don't need lots of gun-play, explosions and blood and guts to have a good, fun and exciting action movie. This movie also featured my favorite movie quote of the year..."Don't mess with Mother Nature, Mother-In-Laws or Motherfreakin' Ukranians!" Overall, The Italian Job is what a summer action movie should be. A cool and exciting plot, some cool chases and original stunts and a winning and fun cast to pull it off, that features Mark Wahlberg, Donald Sutherland, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Mos Def and Edward Norton. Just a great time at the movies!

Now, I went into this movie expecting it to be sort of lame, but I must admit, it proved me wrong. The thing I especially liked about this movie was the fact that it didn't use excessive violence, proving that you don't need violence to do a good heist movie. That being said, this movie did a fairly good job of entertaining me. It had a great cast along with a fair amount of originality as far as the heist goes. I'm thinking about seeing the original...

The Italian Job...8/10

I knew this movie wasn't going to be recieved very well. I thought it was a very fun, smart flick that proved a good action film could be made all the while deleting the sex, and keeping the foul language and even the violence to a minimum. I am a true blue action junkee myself, but it was nice to finally see a film without any over done "Matrix-style" special effects or any high flying martial arts wire work for a change. Because honestly, I'm getting a little bored with it. But I thought This film was well done, F. Gary Gray did a good job as usual, although why he picked Mark Wahlberg for the lead role is beyond me. The three sidekicks, Jason Statham, Mos Def, and even Seth Green did it for me, having me laughing through out the film. Well done really good action flick, won't be well recieved.

RATING 8.5/10

This was just one of those weird, harmless little movies not meant to be taken seriously. I also thought before seeing it that it was a full-tilt serious crime drama at the beginning, and It actually did a good job, coincidentally, of surprising me with a lot of, well, entertainment!

I mean, we've all seen ten thousand of these rehashed mafia movies, "one last job" movies, yawner heists, etc... I for one felt like I deserved a break. I was more impressed with racing minis, clever implosions, a very diverse cast, and Seth Green being Seth Green. Who knew the real meaning of Napster before watching this flick? hehe... and yes, I saw Spider-Man too...

Just plain ol' goofy fun... if you like that sort of thing, you'll love it.

THE ITALIAN JOB

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0317740/IJ-C1239-35.jpg

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Throw together some outlandish stunts, fast cars, impressive gadgets, well placed humour, and a host of very attractive actors, and you get yourself a fast paced, and highly enjoyable heist flick that has enough in it to put Bond to shame.

Mark Wahlberg (Boogie Nights) ventures into remake territory for the third time, and it finally pays off for him. His Planet Of The Apes outing was well recieved at the Box Office but shared a hot/cold relationship with the paying public, whilst The Truth About Charlie, a remake of the classic thriller Charade, soiled the good name of cinema, so it's understandable that this film headlined by the often wooden actor may have its audience preceeding with caution. But do not fear, as The Italian Job delivers on all accounts. The storyline is the typical fare, double crossing and revenge of the sorts, but it manages to stretch out for the 100 or so minutes it runs for, and keeps you entertained till the end. Wahlberg, who I found quite charming in this particular film, is Charlie Croker, a mastermind thief who is pulling off a job in Italy to steal $35 Million worth of gold bullion. His crew consists of inside man Steve (Edward Norton, Red Dragon), computer genius Lyle (Seth Green, Austin Powers In Goldmember, wheelman Handsome Rob (Jason Statham, Snatch), explosives expert Left Ear (Mos Def, Monster's Ball) and veteran safe cracker John Bridger (Donald Sutherland, Backdraft), who has been roped in by Charlie to pull of one final job. As we have learned from the spoiler-plenty trailer, Steve double-crosses his crew and takes the money for himself and finishes the job by finishing them off-or so he thinks. Fast forward a year and Charlie and co. are still very passionate about getting their revenge on Steve, and to do so correctly, they get John's daughter Stella (Charlize Theron, The Devil's Advocate), a gorgeous nerves-of-steel safecracker who reluctantly agress to join in, but it doesn't take long for her to get into the true spirit of things. What follows is plenty of fun; Computer hacking, mini-cooper stunts, a terrific traffic jam of sorts, great use of locations, a well balanced soundtrack, plenty of flattering shots of our lovely cast and some well written humour, courtesey of Donna and Wayne Powers.

Like I said, I found Wahlberg charming in his role as the straight front man, who plays off his crew wonderfully. There's a great sense of natural chemistry between the group that was much appreciated. Theron looks absolutely stunning, but thankfully her character is more than just a pretty face, Mos Def was welcome as the hearing impaired Left Ear who got his share of laugh out loud moments, his dog phobia was cute, whilst Statham's suave, charming ladies' man was tailor-made for the impressive, and particuarly charming, suave actor. Green's computer geek was a real crowd pleaser, as his character delighted in telling of how he was the true mastermind behind the music download phenomenon Napster, and that is what he should be called, as everyone else gets a cool nickname. He didn't irritate me at all, as I thought he might of, and I warmed very quickly to him. Sutherland doesn't get a whole lot of screen time, but he does what he needs to do and he does it well, and Norton, made to do the film due to a contractual obligation, and not by choice, hams it up respectively playing the cocky, smug bastard of the piece well, making it all the more satisfying when his plan is foiled.

I really had a good time with this, despite it being pretty predictable, as it kept me entertained with its characters and humour, not to mention the spectacular car chases. If a sequel really is in the works, i'm there. Job very successful in this case.

Mark Wahlberg has always scared me. Each time I visit a film of his I find myself wondering why am I here? I know that over the last few years the name Mark Wahlberg has been the cause of Single-handedly destroying remake after remake, and has earned a spot on the Box Office Boredom list of people to poke fun at. What I am trying to say is that to me Mark Wahlberg is a joke. It isn’t Wahlberg himself that is a laughing matter, but instead it is his choice of roles is what always results in laughter. His last few roles of Planet of The Apes and The Truth About Charlie, have been remakes that people still despise because they threw the original idea out the window and did their own thing. So when The Mike and I had a chance to go check out the Italian Job, I felt I was up for a good laugh and headed off to the movie lines.

The Italian Job is the story of a group of super crooks that pull off a job in Italy that paid them 35 Million in gold bricks. But when greed gets a hold of one of the crooks, Steve, (Edward Norton) kills one of the group members and leaves the rest for dead. Years later, still haunted by that fateful job, Charlie (Mark Wahlberg) gathers up his original crew and a the daughter of his late partner, who also happens to be one of the best safe crackers in the area. The team vows to get revenge on Steve by pulling off the ultimate heist leaving the greed ridden crook with nothing.

My first disclaimer is that I have not seen the Michael Caine Original. The film does not exist in the Ames area; believe me I have looked. Therefore, you aren’t going to get a lot of “this was worse than the original” type of stuff because I don’t know. I’ve actually been told that the two flicks really only share the name, and don’t really have anything in common with each other. But I only can base my review on what I saw. And to be honest with you, I surprised myself and liked what I saw…mostly.

The cast was a lower budget Ocean’s 11 cast compiled of Wahlberg, Norton, Charlize Theron, Donald Sutherland, Seth Green, Jason Statham, and Mos Def, but they all held their own. Wahlberg was no different that he has been in every movie he’s been in. The potential is there, once he breaks out of the Marky Mark “Good Vibrations” mode he is still stuck in. The Mike’s beloved Charlize was there because she was good looking. Just another pretty face (Sorry Mike). I didn’t really get much out of her character. Norton slept walked through the film (rumors have been out that Norton did not want to do this flick, and only did it because of contractual agreements with Paramount). Norton’s disinterest in the flick showed, and even though I can’t believe I am saying this, if someone Other than Norton was cast, the flick could have been more powerful.

Despite the bigger names like Wahlberg, Theron and Norton it was the lesser-known guys who made the flick. Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter) did a fantastic job as “bad ass” Handsome Rob. Statham’s role as the tough guy worked well for him, and his ridiculous carefree actions kept the film interesting to watch. And Seth Green was amazingly funny. I normally don’t say that about him, but his humorous antics, mixed with a cheesy back story of how he originally created Napster but had it stolen from him was a nice touch to the films comic element.

The film itself was lighthearted and predictable, but you knew that going into the flick. All in all the film is a speedy paced, action packed, fun heist flick that has you rooting for the bad guys (who are good in this case). Filled with creative ideas, some fun dialogue and some fun car scenes, the flick is overall joyride from start to finish.

The predictability of the flick and Norton’s lack of interest are what let the film down, that mixed with a few other minor things. But in the end, I can’t believe I am saying this, The Marky Mark Film gave me some Good Vibrations, and if you are in the mood for a lighthearted payback heist flick, The Italian Job just might be your cup of tea.

Final Grade: B-

The Italian Job: 7/10

http://www.geocities.com/samsmoviereviews/italianjob.art

Move over, Sharon Stone! Somebody who was once at the top of their game is now reduced to this. Yes, I’m talking to you, Charlize Theron. Of course, it isn’t as bad as an amorous night with the little AOL man, but when you’re second billed to MARK WAHLBERG, your career’s in hock. Although when other actors such as Seth Green, Donald Sutherland, and Jason Statham, you can look and see that it’s not all bad.

What I’m talking about it The Italian Job, F. Gary Gray’s addition to the ever-popular genre of heist movies. In fact, Gray is a big fan of these type of movies, naming Snatch the greatest heist flick ever. Unlike straight heist films like Heist, The Italian Job has humor and takes itself more humorously. Of course we don’t understand everything that the computer whiz/geek Lyle says, but neither do the people in the movie, adding to the mocking tone of the movie. It’s not exactly a parody of crime movies, just an homage.

Donald Sutherland must have been aching for a paycheck. He stars as John Bridger, an aging thief who is doing…guess…one last job! Clichès run high, but so does fun (I’ll get to that later). He’s with his team doing a job in Italy, and they successfully steal about $35 million. One of the team, Steve (Edward Norton) turns against them, shoots and kills John, and runs off with the gold. The rest of the crew plan to steal the gold from Steve because of revenge, including Stella, John’s daughter.

PT Cruisers used to be the fad car, but now Mini Coopers are becoming steadily more popular. Thanks to The Italian Job, where everyone drives one, that is. The car chases weren’t that many, but the culminating one was great. When three Minis were driving on the subway tracks, it was just amazing, I really loved it. Of course, there was a lot of advertising. It’s basically a two-hour car commercial, with a few Pepsi adds added in.

However, there’s an interesting note I found. Wahlberg, who plays Charlie, the ringleader, said that The Italian Job had some of the most amazing special effects he had ever seen, while Norton repeated several times that he joined this movie only because of contractual agreements. Wahlberg is most definitely not a leading man…his acting’s like a log on a stream. It starts off high but then falls down. Theron, who plays a beautiful safecracker, also isn’t that great of an actress. When the high point of your career is a RECENT Woody Allen film, you’re in trouble. Norton, my second favorite actor, heaps on the camp, but still doesn’t come off that well. Other actors, including Mos Def, Stathem, and Green, were all funny, especially Green.

The Italian Job is very fun and entertaining, but can’t stay away from clichés. Sutherland does one last move, Norton has a moustache, Green is geeky, Theron is beautiful, there’s a token African-American. Also, the ending is more predictable than, well, a Disney movie. Overall, The Italian Job is a fun two hours. If you’re looking for more than that, stay away.

I didn't hate this movie, nor did I love it. It was so-so.

I thought the acting was dismal throughout most of the movie. If the theater has smell-o-vision, there would have been a strong odor of ham in the air. Normally, I like Donald Sutherland, but he seemed to be thinking of a private joke every time he said his lines. Mark Walhberg, please find a new career (again) and take Seth Green with you. (I liked Green in Buffy, but everything else that he's done has been poor...including Austin Powers).

***SPOILERS***

The plot seemed to be formed from an over used Hollywood cookie cutter. You knew what was going to happen before it happened. Yawn! I liked the way they performed the first heist, but then they turned around and did a similar thing the second time around.

Sutherland's character said that Wahlberg's character thought everything out to the smallest detail. Yikes! I thought the guys in the speedboat were going to buy the watery farm several times with their stupid stunts. Also, Sutherland was pretty concerned that the garbage men didn't show up (to the point of wanting to abort the mission). Then, Walhberg said that the should do the job and Sutherland had a big grin on his face - as if he was thinking "Oh boy, oh boy. We get to do the job. Happy days are here again!" Why did they need the garbage men? I must have missed that point.

Did we need to hear about Napster every 3 seconds in this movie? Who cares? That point was overused and annoying. Plus, are we to believe that the code for Napster fit on a single floppy disk? Even if it did, which I really doubt, didn't Green's character save the program on his computer's hard drive? The whole point how Napster was actually stolen was very stupid!!!

Also, the part towards the end, where Green asked the girl to stand in front of the speakers seemed very childish. He was grinning like a ten-year old that just found a National Geographic magazine in the library.

The plot point where they stole a cable company vehicle was stupid. Didn't the cable company notice that a van was missing? Didn't the cable lady notice that her shirt was missing?

Wasn't it convenient that Theron's character owned a Mini Cooper? Wasn't it convenient that Theron's character had the talent for cracking safes? Wasn't it convenient that Green's character was a super computer genius, but decided to become a thief instead of starting his own multi-billion dollar business? Wasn’t it convenient that Norton’s character didn’t spend (or fence) very much of the gold?

Why didn't the guys that helped Norton's character steal the gold from Sutherland (and company) get a piece of the pie? The story made it sound like Norton's character took all of the gold. Did he kill his double-crossing buddies also?

What was up with Spiderman in the "armor car chase" scene towards the end? What did Spiderman have to do with the movie?

***END SPOILERS***

I say......5.5/10.

This movie is evidence of what is wrong with most movies these days, no love has been put into it by the people making it its all about getting money and its evident.

The script tried too hard to be funny.

Mark Walberg (Boogie Nights-8/10) and Edward Norton (Fight Club - 10/10) deliver decent perfoamnces as they usually do and Charlize Theron is hot, but this movie trys too hard to make you feel something for the characters and it fails.

If you want a decent heist film with great characters and hard work put into the film see Heat - 9/10.

The Italian Job is not only one of the better remakes I've seen, but also one of the best thief movies I've seen. I love how they don't use guns, they just use sheer brain power to pull off a heist. It manages to keep you on the edge of your seat with incredible chase sequences. The acting was good too especially Seth Green and Edward Norton. Seth Green and Jason Statham had to be my favorite characters. Edward Norton was one of those guys you loved to hate. I have no idea how someone could give this movie a 1/10. There's no way you could hate it that much, I mean 1/10 is a "I despised it beyond belief" rating. Well I thought it was one of the most exciting movies of 2003, and it was so good, that I bought it!

The Italian Job- 9/10 :)

i was very surprised with The Italian Job. the performances were mostly very good, Walhberg was quite good (at least he was a lot better than in most of his films). The rest of the main group were also good (although none were overly great except for Sutherland). the action scenes were very nicely filmed and energetic and were constantly interesting and engaging. overall i found it to be a very enjoyable and fun film

8/10
