STORY:
A man has 24 hours before he goes to jail for seven long years for dealing drugs. In this time he must reconnect with his friends and father, and say goodbye to the ones dearest to him. On the 25th hour, he has to leave them all behind. What would you do if you were facing a seven year jail sentence? Would you serve it? Would you run away? Would you end your life? These are the three limited options that Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) has.
THOUGHTS:
This is a great movie dealing with one man's last day of freedom. Edward Norton gives a layered performance that is full of hate and self anger. One scene in particular was incredible, where Monty just lets all his hate and anger spill out.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is also good as an English teacher and Monty's best friend, who as feelings for a student of his. That sub-plot really adds to his character.
Monty's other friend, played by Barry Pepper was also good. He is mad at Monty throwing everything away, and he's mad at himself for watching him do it.
Rosario Dawson plays Monty's girlfriend, who Monty doesn't trust any more. She is alright, not as good as the rest though. Her characted isn't as complex as the other charactes either.
Spike Lee's directing was good, although some of the "looking straight into the camera" shots were a bit cheesy and the last 10 minutes or so were a bit off and didn't match the style of the rest of the movie. The pace is very quick, even though there is no real action and full of tension. There was definatley a certain dread in the air as the night came to an end.
The 25th Hour is a very deep, moving and sometimes sad film. It raises alot of moral questions and "what would you do?" scenarios. It also feels very current with references to Bin Laden and R. Kelly. So if your looking for a good movie that will make you think, light up this Spike Lee joint.
