View Full Version : Off Topic Threads- a rant (mother of god, please don't let this one go off topic!)

Tom Samborski

All right, this is just my opinion remember, and this is not an insult to my fellow schmoes, but I'm starting to get tired of threads going off-topic. An example is the "Why can't schmoes solve arguments in a civilized matter" thread. At first, it was just supposed to be solving arguments in a civilized way. Instead, it turned into a topic about homosexuals and God. Now I know I'm not the administrator, nor a moderator, but can we please keep threads on topic with the thread's title? It is so much better in my opinion, because we can actually discuss things while enjoying them at the same time.

You know, I sat here a few minutes trying to come up with a witty reply that would send this topic way of course, and somehow I just cant do it. Someone else step up. :D

In a sense, that topic didn't stray off course. We demonstrated that it was indeed possible for schmoes to debate in a civilized manner. But the thread continued past the point of relevance. It was about twice as extensive as it should have been. Off-topic discussion should be permissible in moderation. A reasonably-sized chat concerning science or religion here and there is harmless, although this board's chief purpose is to discuss movies.

I like twinkies.

Samborski - You blatantly omit the fact that the "rant" stayed civilised.

The rant did stay civilized, which was indeed a good thing, but it went off-topic as well. There is a difference: civilized means that the topic goes smoothly, without any arguments or disputes. Off-topic means that the thread goes completely unrelated to the question or the rant. Some of these rants have stayed civilized, but have gone off-topic at the same time.

I'm so tempted to rant and bitch about certain threads (no, not about the "civilised arguments" thread which I found somehow entertaining)... but damnit, I'm so bloody tempted! Where's my valium goddamnit??? ;)

Yeah. I know what you mean, Tom. Like there's that fucking long Michael Moore thread that eventually went off-topic and schmoes started quoting passages to the bible. I HATE when shit like that happens.

Anyway, concerning Twinkies. A nice cream filled snack.

The discussion in question was both civil and related to the initial rant. It was an indirect experiment to see if schmoes could debate in a civilized manner. It wore out its welcome, but I feel that it was, in fact, related to the topic.

And yes, twinkies are golden, spongy snack cakes resplendent with a light, fluffy cream. Useless trivia – said cream was originally banana-flavored.

Well, according to John McClane, you can bite into "a 1000 year old Twinkie" and it will be bad tasting. So, according to that statement, you can still reach the conclusion that Twinkies have a 50 year shelf life to them.

I'll stay on topic here. (Hold the applause.)

What is the major problem, Tom? We are here to talk movies, which we do more often than not. I know I'm guiltier than most of straying off-topic, but we're only human. I use humor (I think) to keep many of my posts light. Often it's not directly movie-related. But I hope it's thought that I contribute to the boards, and don't detract from them.

This place would get pretty stale if everything were entirely on-topic.

"Wow, The Matrix was great. Great CGI, great acting. Boy, it was just great."

"No, I thought it sucked. Keanu can't act. The freeway scene looked so fake."

"Dude, it rocked!"

"No it didn't."

"Yes it did."

I, for one, would tire pretty quickly of that. I'm glad we're allowed some leeway.

P.S. Twinkies suck. Ding Dongs rule.

it is human to err tom. sometimes i have to admit i can not help myself. take that whole religion thing, i had to get into that. it was just to hard for me avoid the lure of a good civilized debate. i understand this is a movie board and i do a lot of movie related talk. however, if neccessary i will share my opinions on any topic that crops up, and sometimes i move off topic a little to make a joke. i cant help that...i am a light-hearted soul at best...

my thought would be this tom. if it is really so much of a problem for you, then thats why we have the report button. that way, if we do go off topic you can report us and get the thread sorted out by a mod. or you could just ignore us ;)

ps- i like grebs ding dongs ;):D

I agree with Greb. Ding dongs are supperior to Twinkies. But even better is the close cousin of the Ding Dong, the Ring Ding!! (this is the version made by Drakes)

They are very similar, but the Ring Ding's have a better filling to cake ratio. (And Greb, you know, the more creamy white filling, the better);)

I'm going to shock everyone and say that I agree with Samborski...in principle. The thing is, we know it's sometimes not right, but other times it is the very essence of the place. I accept that I post only 75% that stay on topic (making me one of the worst offenders) but I LOVE this place - even when I am arguing. It's stupid, I know, but when things are great here my whole mood is brighter - and vice-versa. I'd like to think I have made a bunch of new friends and sometimes communicating with them is very hard. For example, I like certain people here that I don't talk to very often - mainly horror Schmoes (R&J, Vorhees, etc) so it just seems easier and funnier to make a stoopid remark and bail. I do PM and chat with my fellow partners in crime - so I try to keep that to a minimum on the boards, but I hear what you are saying Samborski - Twinkies DO suck.

I am also an offender, i admit. I don't try to go off topic but if someone challenges your point of view ON the topic and then you respond, you start to get into a debate to defend your point of view and before you know it you are OFF topic but you just can't stop :) I enjoy a good civilized debate and most converstions in real life do not stay on topic.

If I am not interested in a topic or in the direction a topic is going, I just don't read it. I kind of don't understand why that is not what everyone does.

...I guess I'll be the first to come out and say it - Greb, you never stay on-topic for long. Personally, I don't think that this is what the place is about; little "in-jokes" between people, and such - it isn't needed. If you'd like to parade the fact that you're friendly with people that post here, do it in an appropriate thread. (hint, hint: this is a movie discussion forum, hence, there is no appropriate thread) Sorry to come across as rude, and I only use you as an example, because I consider you to be the biggest problem, as far as going off-topic goes.

Every now and again is fine, but go through, and take a look at the majority of the posting you've done (and this doesn't apply to Greb, exclusively, because there are quite a few people who participate in 'chatting' more than 'posting' [the difference should be obvious]). I think you'll notice that, more often than not, you proceed to take a thread off-topic, or have a discussion - or something like that.

I'm losing focus here, so I'll leave it at that. Needless to say, I'm not a moderator, and therefore, I'm not trying to say that you're in any kind of trouble; I'm merely espressing my personal opinion. I really wish more actual discussion woule take place here, as opposed to the example you gave yourself.

...it's a moot point, in the end, but I figued I would bring it up, nonetheless.

I don't like it when a topic gets off-topic, but I also don't like it when people think that a topic is off-topic, when in fact, that topic has EVOLVED.

Conversation isn't supposed to be: A, B, A, B, A, B, A, B

It's supposed to be: A + B = C, A + B + C = D, A + B + C + D = E.....

Dumb-Fokker-**

Obviously. My problem isn't that a thread can grow beyond the initial topic, but that the original topic is lost, forgotten amidst stupid jokes, and - you get my point. Just thought I would more clearly draw my line.

But I'm at a loss for words.

I agree with Bubba, conversations EVOLVE, that's natural.

Dumb-Fokker,
I think we all can go off topic sometimes, but calling Greb out like that was a tad unfair.

It's obvious that Greb, BCV, Reigh, QTR and other "Super Schmoes" have been around awhile and make quips back and forth, but that's what I find great about this board. That sense of comraderie is appealing to me.

But I don't think that that is necessarily "off-topic". Plus, who gives a shit anyway. Topic, shmopic, its called "DISCUSSION". I mean if we were all sitting around in a bar having a few and talkin for a couple hours, the conversation would evolve and we'd probably hit on a lot of topics, from the latest movie, to Lindsey's breasts, whatever. So threads are the same way. You can always make a post to "bring it back on topic" if you want.

To me a thread topic is a discussion starter, but where it goes from there is up to the participants. And usually, if someone jumps in the middle of a discussion and says something totally off the wall, it is either ignored or th person is asked WTF?

Grebdron
06-09-2003, 01:21 PM
Why thank you, Pater. You said it much better (and cleaner) than I could have hoped to.

Like I said in my earlier (off-topic, I'm sure) post, I hope that it's thought that I contribute to, not detract from, this board.

P.S. Lindsey's breasts have never been a topic of my discussion. That's saved for the lecherous younger schmoes.;)

countchocula
06-09-2003, 01:25 PM
I can see Dumb Fokker's point. "In-jokes" tend to alienate other schmoes and can completely derail the purpose of a thread. But as Pater asserted, the sense of camaraderie is refreshing. Unfortunately, it only involves a handful of schmoes out of 10,000. Or maybe that's fortunate. I don't know.

quoth_the_raven
06-09-2003, 01:38 PM
first off, well done pater for putting over what i wanted to, without the swearing. i cant help who i am. yes, i am primarily hear to talk about movies. but man oh man, that is such a small part of who i really am. sometimes, the other stuff just comes through. and in a conversation, or a discussion, it does. conversation can spiral off into so many different areas, thats whats so bloody great about it. and you know, its not specifically that i intend to go off topic. its just certain things trigger off things in my mind that probably are not relevant. and so i post it. at the end of the day, it has still come from somethign i read within that post.

as for the issue of in-jokes...well i havent really been here all that long, i was luckily taken in by greb, reigh et all. the point is, there is a group of schmoes here (and they all know who they are) who i have come to have a great deal of time for...this is what happens when people discuss and converse. its part of life that when you talk to find like-minded souls out there. so in a way, its a natural progression for us to quip and poke at each other...we can do it, because we get on. its just another side to the conversation.

besides, at the end of the day, although we go off topic, and i know i am a huge offender, its all part of what makes these boards so much of a laugh. the fact that we can, and that the conversations can go in whatever direction they so chose to. i mean, if we were all sitting around a table in a pub ( i do realise that with the number of schmoes, it would have to be a large fucking pub lol), we would not just talk about movies. we would probably move off topic a lot...same applies here. to expect people to remain focused on one subject all the time is expecting something that is nigh on impossible.

we all love a good debate. on movies, or on whatever other subject crops up. that much is obvious from the fact we are here. if we sometimes move away from the advertised purpose of these boards, thats just the way the conversation goes i am afraid.

plus without persons such as myself and greb, this site would cosnsist of two types of post. "i liked this movie because..." or "i didnt like the movie because". endless variations on that theme.

at the end of the day, variety is the spice of life. and you have to admit, its adds a little bit to the atmosphere of the site...

besides, if it was a really huge problem, i am sure me and greb would have been banned ages ago...

Well done! I think since you are the Worst Offender, you should begin all your posts in this manner, providing clear reference to the topic being discussed. One suggestion, though. It would be even better if you provided a "topic sandwich" and ended the post with something along the lines of:

Well, it's obvious that you aren't able to take this criticism in stride, so let me just drive my point home, one more time. This is a movie discussion board. When the majority of the posting one has done, has nothing to do with film, or aything pertaining to the industry, you have to ask the question; Why bother posting at a movie discussion forum? Seriously; take a look at all of the posting you have done. Now, look at what is relevant. I don't know about the rest of you, but I come to this site, because it is a movie discussion forum, and a damn good one. I like everyone here, basically, and I don't mind the occasional off-topic thread, (or, as is the case usually, the occasional off-topic post) but it - ... I just can't keep my focus, at the moment. Obviously, everything I've said is my own opinion, but there are people that share this opinion. This rant isn't exclusive to Greb, but, as I've repeatedly said, he is, in my experience, the "worst offender". Take that as you will, a quick look at your posting history will prove my point. I'm not saying that anyone should get in trouble, or that anyone should be banned, I'm merely stating my opinion. Off-topic posting is something that could become more frequent, and this forum could simply degenerate into one big "inside joke". It has happened before, although not here, and if it were to happen here, it would be a shame.

Fuck it. Nevermind. I don't even know what I'm talking about.

...oh, and the LotR joke... Lame.

Stemming from the man who 'walked out' of JoBlo, only for me to post and tell him not to be ridiculous, come back and have fun, I'm actually quite hurt by that post, DF. I've said all along, I'll never exclude anyone from my gang (and it is my gang - regardless of what they say) and I post most of the time in a sensible way. You want camaraderie? Yeah, it's true - I have invited Paul Calf and Lady Version to my house. I know the names of twenty of your girlfriends/boyfriends. I can tell you where another 30 work and what they like about it. I know that I can recommend such and such music to Romero & Juliet, whilst Bubba 'probably wouldn't like it'. I can tell you me and bowieee are big fans of obscure films, Jason Vorhees is a funny guy, James Logan is a kitten unless you mess with his current squeeze, QTR has a girlfriend who is secretly in love with me, and Flowrchild is better looking than most of you can imagine. I also know what makes some of you tick and some of you ticked off. I can chat to some of you in private but on the forums we are poison together. It's a community - a family might be stretching it - and sometimes we chat. you want to know what pisses me off? When people obstinatel don't participate and instead point out how they are not 'cool' enough. Not cool enough? We're film geeks, for fuck sake. If you were cool enough you wouldn't need affirmation from me and Greb or BCV or Joblo. So it spills onto the forum - yeah, and? Jo hardly ever complains and whn he does, man, we say sorry and chill out. And we do chat in the chat rooms - you've all been there once or twice and haven't we talked the same smash? Yes. Yes we have. I sometimes get tired having to answer IM's any time I come near my computer so I blank them for a week - no offence meant. Because I HAVE to do that, sometimes I reference/mock/humiliate another Schmoe on the forum - it's all good fun and if it wasn't, who would come here? I'll tell you who - the 22% who post once in a while. If it wasn't for the friendships here, AS WELL AS the movie chat, it wouldn't be half the place it is. And this place is fucking great.

Dumb-Fokker-**
06-09-2003, 06:09 PM
You're missing my point, Reigh, entirely. My point is this: Don't forget why we're here. It's fine that everyone is friendly with eachother, but when I read through a thread, and see the original topic ignored, it is a little discouraging. I came back because I love to talk about film, but this place is quickly becoming a place to state an opinion, and move on. No arguments, no retaliation - just a simple statement. Of course, this is a generalization, but you can't ignore the fact that it is fairly common. I think that, in this case, our friendliness works against us. A feeling of exclusiveness is felt, and so, n00bs are left feeling left out. Really, it's too much to talk about right now, but I thought I would make another quick post, anyways. Again, I don't have anything against the people that post here (it's the internet, after all) but I would like this place to make a movement towards the days when I was merely a lurker. Actual film discussion, arguments, interesting conversation, pertaining to film. This exclusive feeling, this cliquiness works against that, I think. Shit, I've been here quite a while, and I feel outside of certain cliques and threads. Hence, I've stopped posting, dramatically. ...more later, my hand is tired. ...er....

quoth_the_raven
06-09-2003, 06:23 PM
DF,

i dont feel there is an cliquiness here at alli think clique is a word thrown around way to much at situations where certain people happen to get on better. when i started, i didnt think "hey lets tag onto greb and reigh and co, they seem like an in crowd", it just happened that i found them to be persons who thought and posted in the same way as me. there is no exclusivity here. the whole place ticks along pretty naturally and in a good natured way from my POV. sure, some folks gets on better. but then that is part of the way social interaction works.

perfect example really would be me set of close friends at university. they are all people dear to me, all people i respect and get on with. like the schmoes as a whole. however, i get on with two people especially, for one reason or another. the same applies here.

its not like i am part of some exclusive inner sect or something. it just happens that i get on better with some folks and it spills onto the boards a little. thats not a crime, and like i said earlier, if it was a problem, a true problem that was out of hand, would not Jo have put his foot down, or atleast PM'd us to tell us to calm it down a bit?

Grebdron
06-09-2003, 06:25 PM
DF...it's not that I can't take constructive criticism. I can. I get it daily. And I deal with it. I just wonder why I was singled out. You say I'm the worst offender. That's quite possibly true. But there are a lot fewer haters, I think, than there are people who enjoy seeing what I have to say. I don't profess to be "loved" or anything, except by a certain few. But I don't think there are many who would rather have me enter a thread and say "I liked it, out."

I have no idea what QTR is talking about. He's a bumlick and I've tried on numerous occasions to get rid of the little chug. He's creepy.

I'm going to say no more. I think DF has a point - I also think it is easy to mistake the friendliness as something exclusive. I'll just say this: I like it here. I like - with only 10 exceptions out of 10,000 - everyone who comes here. I even applied to be a mod, but know I don't have the temperament for it (and said as such in my application). It's not a gang. There is no us. There is only people who can make fun of themselves (and I call myself worse names than any of you ever have - I'm not that precious), fun of their friends and talk about movies. If ya want to chat with me, I'll be around. I'm always around. Cheers.

My point exactly, Greb. Do you have nothing else to say, regarding a film, other than "I liked it, out."? Because, that is the problem. Actual discussion, regarding film, isn't what it should be. I think that this is due, in large part, to the exclusive feeling that some people give off. Everything is jokes, and humourour insults, and this, and that - but, "I liked it, out." is all you expect us to want out of you? How about reasons for liking it? Seriously, you were singled out, because I've read through entire threads, and at the end, I'd read almost nothing about the topic, but alot about twinkies, sex, and whatever the fuck else. If people want to joke, and shit like that, it's fine, but it's not if that's all it is. Hell, throw in a few comments about the film/actress/director/whatever, and that'll be fine.

"I have no idea what QTR is talking about. He's a bumlick and I've tried on numerous occasions to get rid of the little chug. He's creepy."

That is the problem. In the context of the entire post, it is fine, but quite often, you'll find that no mention of the topic at hand will be made. Film will be ignored. I don't come here for the people, I come here to talk about film with the people, and that is the problem, I think. I come here because my friends aren't big on movies, and I like to talk about them with others who are.

Totally lost my train of thought. Damn AIM. Alright, well, I'm done with this thread.

Seriously, DF, now it seems you just want to perisist in this campaign. And it seems now to be singled on Greb. Wanna know something - if it wasn't for the fact that I actually read most of your posts, it would be a breeze for me to isolate all the threads you come into, make a stunningly uncalled for joke about your penis and who you would do this/that to and leave. What has that to do with the topic at hand, eh? Where is that in the context of the original posters intention? Nothing and nowhere.

And don't argue about this - it's simple for me to prove it. I have totolerate it, wanna know why? I'm not the administrator. I never make jokes about 'titties' or 'whatever else. And no-one else complains about your (sometimes) jokes about how well-hung you are. Again: know why? Because it's people like you and people like Greb and people like Annie Hall or Electriclite or Bubba or The Arrow that give this place it's character. The place is unique and that is down to a) Jo's stringent policy of not tolerating any dog-shit abuse being hurled around and b) the atmosphere WE generate. Even me. Even Beeblebrox. Even Nobody Special and Ronahldino and ...pick someone. You walked out before after something (I can't even rememeber) escalated out of hand. Let's not do it again, or cause others to want to leave, eh? Just ignore us - and we'll do the same.

Being the diplomatic and fair-minded horror schmoe that I am...

The Gen. schmoes (or "Normals," as we like to call them) in question, no matter how bloated or unfunny, have always come across as being very good natured and knowledgeable..

you can only talk about Fight Club for so long; there's REALLY no harm in going a little (lot) off topic with a bunch of people with whom you've been E-conversing for a very long time.

Chief, or no chief-glorious, this chief-, there's a little Frakenstein a-brewing: you simply cant cut out the kind of familiarity that's been bred into this site because of the obvious good intentions in its rules.. Reigh called it a prison(lol), but I think most of us see it as a very, verrry friendly place..

Besides this topic, which has obviously scored VERY high on the Iron-o-meter, I haven't seen anything really 'crucial' being derailed by the so-called offenders.

Whether its about lpenis jokes or twinkies, the bottom line is that schmoes here WILL ALWAYS jump at a fair chance to have a sane, little convo.. in fact, it has already been proven.

Jumping on this bandwagon a little late, I gotta say Im with Reigh and Greb and the rest of the 'Gang'. Every single one of us is a part of this website, we are our own little personalities, and it shows in all of our posts. I am a very bitter and sarcastic person, and that shows in almost all of my posts. Greb is old and senile, it shows in all of his posts. :D Catch a pattern here? If everyone replied to a topic in a boring, monotone form, what would this place be like? Boring and monotone, duh, I just said it. If I had to read posts like this: "I found the directors taste to be very provocative. The way he captured the raw sexual magnitude along with the subliminal innuendoes between the two characters just made me weep with joy", day after day, I wouldnt even come to this site. Do you realize just how boring this place would be if everyone wrote like that? I prefer to go into a topic and see someone say something like: "I loved the movie, it was fun all the way through, non-stop laughs, just what I needed in fact. Oh yeah, and Reigh likes to lick bum-bums." It gets my mind off things a little. I can still read peoples opinions on the film and snicker over the fact that Reigh likes licking bum-bum's (He does, doesnt he? :D) It makes this place a little lighter on the mind. Which is something I welcome very much.

And Reigh is right about another thing, we are all movie geeks. Whether we admit it or not. Thats the whole reason we come here everyday. That and to take cheap shots at Greb. But is it really that bad if we develop little friendships while we are here? I go to the chat room, we have fun in there. I come to these boards multiple times a day, I have fun here. Thats really the whole point of everything, to have fun. And you my friend seem to not be having fun, even though the rest of us are. And that is called a PARTY POOPER!!

P.S.
Reigh likes bums :D

Also, this 'gang' that Reigh mentioned, it has a full name: Gangbang. Ooops, so much for not talking about it in public! ;)

Oh yeah and................

Grebs old. :p

Honestly, I've been waiting for someone to realize something, but since it hasn't happened yet, I'll ruin the surprise for everyone... I really wasn't being serious. I joke around, and hijack just as many threads as the rest of us, and I'm gonna complain about other people doing it? Seriously, someone should have called me on it alot sooner than that. You all post here, and if you read anything I write, you'll see that I go off-topic, and joke around just as much as Greb, Reigh, or anyone else. Just bored, I guess. Figured I could rile some people up. Greb, sorry you had to be the butt of my boredom problem, but since everyone loves you, I figured I would make you my easy target. In closing - chill out, people! This is only a movie discussion board. Look at how serious some of you got, at the slightest mention of annoyance from someone. It's just supposed to be fun. Seriously.

You know what? I really shouldn't care, but I do. I've been waiting for some of the "out of the loop" schmoes to come to my rescue, and you have. Thanks Pater, and R & J, and Claw, and Jackson. It actually means something that you guys think I'm okay. If I weren't such a bitter old fool, I'd cry.

Damn Greb, that's harsh. - I'm "Out of the Loop" huh?

Well fuck you and your loop. I'll start my own loop. It will be a glorious loop, with no beginning and no end, and it will be oblong, not perfectly circle. Oh, it will be a colorful loop as well, with shades of mauve and turqoise, and perriwinkle, and other not so popular colors. And when you stand "in the loop", you shall feel powerful and loved and strangely horny, yet sometimes a bit melancholy and depressed and bitter, but on the whole jolly. And my loop will sings songs together and we'll be a merry bunch indeed. We'll sing of hope and justice, and of love between our brothers and our sisters all over this land. My loop will only post well thought out movie related things. We will sing the praises of Magnolia AND Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and everything in between. Who will join me in the loop? Come on let's get loopy!!!

Sorry, feelin' a little goofy today.

Oh yeah, and just kidding about the fuck you.

DF,

In re-reading your posts from this thread, it is hard to detect that you were joking. Usually when someone is being sarcastic, they will reveal it at least subtly by exaggerating something, or give some sort of clue. Perhaps I just missed it, but it does appear that the "I'm just joking" post seems to be a bit of a back-pedal.

But, hey, I don't know you well and if you say you were just joking then I'll take you at your word. That's cool and the gang.

And I apologize for the "bullshit" comment.

I'm actually debating as to whether to add my $0.02 here and perhaps wake up those sleeping dogs, or just be blatant as say what I think.

OK, fair enough, it's been a while since I last visited here, but I've been browsing the forums since June 2000 and the issues surrounding "cliques" or "in-jokes" have always lurked - I think you'll find it with any online BB. As exceptional as Joblo.com is, it's still a message board, and anything that attracts individuals will attract individual opinions, senses of humour, sexual preferences, whatever. No-one expects everyone (ooh, juxtaposition) to get along, but there's always a small peep when people are stepped on. And issues always blow over. Someone makes one too many funny quips and soon it's forgotten.

I deem the post ultimately pointless. It's completely uncontroversial and raises no-one's heckles. How clever and lazy of me :p
