View Full Version : John Woo and those FRICKIN' Berettas!

I just had to say it.
John Woo's movies always have Chow Yun-Fat, or whoever, lunging out with dual BERETTAS. Of all the guns, a Beretta M92FS. The sidearm for the LAPD. The US military uses the M9, which is basically the same weapon.

Such a generic friggin' gun! Sorry to sound like a gun geek/hoplologist, but this sucker likes to jam up after every couple hundred rounds.
If anybody can explain my favorite director's obsession with this gun, I'll be enlightened. I need more caffeine and choco now.

And only in a John Woo movie would somebody need to fire their gun a couple of hundred times before hitting their target!
:D

I'd like to see 'em use a nice HK or Sig Sauer. I'm fond of Glocks myself, (i have a Glock 23 which is the compact .40 cal.) but they are overused as well.

This is possibly the least bad thing about John Woo movies.

Agreed, in a sense. I don't see what's so bad about it. I'm no gun-lover (quite the contrary, actually), but Berettas look good and generic, so use 'em. James Bond has his Walter PPK, Chow Yun-Fat has his dual Berettas. Two movie legends right there.

More joys of caffeine. First you get the "Why Dramas SUCK" rant, and now you get my little rant on Berettas.
Paterfamilias, I have that same weapon! I like Glocks, they fire the same way every single time. The funny thing is, the first time my Ma went out shooting, she put me (a fair marksman) and my stepdad (ex-Marine, current cop) to shame.
But Berettas are cool. They automatically identify a movie as HK-styled if the hero comes lunging out with a Beretta in each hand. The Transporter had that kickass scene with the pistol flipping through the air. But c'mon, John Woo, find a new gun! James Bond upgraded a few movies back, so it's time that Chow Yun-Fat keeps like a bazooka in his pocket!

Wow, that's pretty cool that you have the 23. I have found mine to be extremely reliable. That's funny about your mom. I had a similar situation when I took my wife shooting for the first time. She was awesome. I think it's because women are more patient and actually listen to instruction better. Guys tend to be like, yeah, yeah, I know how to shoot. Just point and pull the trigger, right?
It would be great to see Chow pull out some Desert Eagle .50s or Ruger .454 casulls. Ya know, big ass guns!!

he's an action director, what do you expect?
A gun thats so reliable that may jam after only a "few hundred" rounds?
I'll take it....which is why the military and some police forces use them..they're cost effective (unlike a GLOCK) about as reliable as any machined mechanism shooting device can be, while still being cost effective.
I used to own a sweet little 22 Beretta...got stolen out of my home while I was on vacation...recovered in a hold up 5 years later...but the police told me they had to destroy it cause even though I bought it legally outside of city limits, (took the paperwork to the police station and reported it stolen..so in case some asshole killed someone, I wouldnt end up in jail) Cop asked me, why I had a gun in my home when the city ordinance stated otherwise....I told him that when I can get my own personal cop to watch my home and family at night when we are asleep, I'll stop buying guns...he asked me if I had it in me to kill a home invader if that ever happened..I immediatley replied, without hesitation and with extreme prejudice...he told me he believed me, cause usually when folks are presented with that question, they hesitate..not me..I could shoot someone dead in an instant if I had to..wouldnt lose any sleep over it either...but of course I hope I NEVER have to.
Now I own a nice little Rossi 38 snub nose 5 shot with custom rubber grips..1991 handgun of the year award winner. I've always liked these types over semi autos...but I'll be getting a full size Beretta pretty soon as well. I LOVE going to the shooting range...too bad the one time I went, the guy wouldnt let me tape printed headshot photos of my most hated media people to the targets. (we've known each other for awhile) :D
Oh, and besides the Berettas....my rant is that John Woo has much to make up for after that fucking terrible disaster of a movie called Windtalkers.....I kept rubbing eyes til they bled, cause I couldnt believe that this trash was made by the same guy who directed the fantastic Mission Impossible 2!
Give Chow Yun-Fat a green-tinted sword, infinitely cooler than any gun.

MI2?
Damn, that was bad.
John Woo could go the way of Brandon Lee and I wouldn't lose any sleep.

Sorry to sound like a gun geek/hoplologist, but this sucker likes to jam up after every couple hundred rounds.
They jam roughly one in every 10,000 rounds according to the military tests - one of the highest reliability rates for semi-autos (though not the highest, they ended up being chosen for the military as they're cheaper then the other gun, a Sig, that met the grade).
He uses the Berettas because he likes the look of them - when he started making A Better Tomorrow, they had literally only been out for less then a year and were not even close to "generic". I think the look of the Beretta is beautiful, I'd like to get a real one someday.

While I can't really think of ANY celebrities that if they die, I'd lose sleep... I have to ask. Greb, which of his movies have you seen?
James Bond upgraded a few movies back
...to the direct descendent of the PPK, the P99. Maybe he'll start using a 93R? :P

MI2, Face-Off, Broken Arrow and Hard Target.
All of them shit. Every last one. And I didn't see Windtalkers...didn't have to.

MI2, Face-Off, Broken Arrow and Hard Target.
It is rapidly becoming a cliche but.... See his Hong Kong movies. Bullet in the Head is widely considered his best movie, Woo himself included. It's also the only movie of his (discounting Windtalkers of course) since A Better Tomorrow to not have a lot of the dual pistol thing (one very brief scene). I can also reccomend A Better Tomorrow. His most "Westernized" movie is probably Hard-Boiled - even more Western in some ways then his American-made movies. Pretty much non-stop gunfights, with the largest body count in film.
If you like slapstick comedy, you might also want to check out Once a Thief.
His American movies are in quite a few ways like exaggerated shittier versions of his Chinese movies - especially Mission: Impossible 2.

I was actually thinking of the 8000. But yeah, when I said "generic," I meant the overall type of weapon, not the looks. Berettas look darn sweet, better than those handy Swedish bricks we call Glocks. Or whatever the fuck they are.

Generic as in 9MM semiauto? Yeah, it is kind of becoming a real standard. Watch a western though, 99% of the time they use Colt .45 single action revolvers, most of the time the Army or Navy varieties. Love those guns that Josey Wales uses, forget the name.
Who cares, guns are guns. In a John Woo movie it's not the kind of gun it's what the character does with it and how many rooms he dives into sideways in slow motion.

Josey's Guns
* Josey's main guns are Colt Walkers, the magnum handgun of the day. These would have likely been captured from a Union cavalryman.
* His two backups, carried in shoulder holsters, appear to be Colt Navies.
* His rifle, only used twice, during the "Missouri Boat Ride" and "Comancheros" scenes, is some type of Sharps with a telescopic sight, which would have been the sniper rifle of the time.
Ain't the internet grand?
