Pi - (7/10)
Info: (1998) R, Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis, Pamela Hart
Genre: Sci-Fi/Thriller
Comments: After viewing Requiem for a Dream and being slightly dissapointed, I decided to give Aronofsky's other flick a watch. To my delight this was one twisted and intelligent little thriller. Max Cohen is a brilliant math wiz. He lives by himself in an apartment filled with wires that are all connected to one computer. Over time he becomes obsessed with finding out the pattern for the stock market. However when his computer crashes he receives a set of numbers which seem to hold meaning to others. The direction is magnificent. It resembles that of Requiem however Pi is shot entirely in black and white. About 70% of the time the picture appears very grainy, almost so grainy that you can not see what is going on. I loved the gritty look of it. It makes it feel like Lynch's Eraserhead. The visuals are stunning, they are incredibly disturbing with lots of chaotic symbolism such as a random brain and a guy who drips blood from his hand. So much of this movie feels like a Lynch film. The story moves along well. I felt it tailed off towards the end however. I was expecting more of a conclusion. This unknown actor (well to me that is) does an amazing job. The whole feel of the movie is something you rarely see in modern movies. Aronofksy recreated a disturbing formula very well. Pi is a weird flick but is recommended to any fan of Lynch or to anyone who likes a good Sci-fi thriller.
Acting - 7/10 (Top Notch. Creepy characters and a psychotic atmosphere)
Violence/Gore - 6/10 (There are some very disturbing images of blood and brains etc..)
