View Full Version : The question of the millenium: Why do people acyually hate Scream?!

I found it extremely good, if you are a horror fan, I don't see why you wouldn't like it, great acting, characterization, directing, reference heaven, tons of fun intencional cliches and even gory...why wouldn't someone like it?

the first scream was great. the sequels were pretty retarded, and i hate the numerous teen slasher flicks that it spawned, but i gotta give credit where credit is due.

I liekd the whoel trilogy. Teh first one was the best of course. I don't hate it for all the carbon copies it spawned. All horror movies that are big spawn some type of cheap knock off. Halloween was copied with such crap fests as Silent Night, Deadly Night.

The first one isnt a bad comedy spoof of the slasher genre, but still contains no thrills, surprises or tension.....but at least it is funny..........The sequels are just redundant one send up per genre is more than enough but hey not only did they spoof it then they made a spoof of the spoof with Scary Movie..
Which leads me to why I think many dont dig the Scream films...it was the nail in the coffin for the US horror genre and they still havent recovered..
The irony ofcourse is that SCREAM isnt even a horror film in anyway, its a comedy plain and simple. (Maybe unless you havent seen the originals it spoofed but its like calling Flying High a disaster film because you never saw AirPlane)

06-03-2003, 11:45 PM
well, i think the first scream had plenty of tension.
if you want to talk about the "final nail in the coffin", i say you need to re-watch i know what you did last summer, i still know what you did last summer, urban legend, soul survivor, the forsaken, final destination, ghost ship, the ring, darkness falls, jason x, etc...
Deckard

Thats the point, it was the final nail in the coffin of US horror.........studios saw the profits and made knock off after knock off with the same silly ideals of what constitutes horror or thrills.
It was the nail in the coffin becuase it lowered the bar so low, yet was so succesful that there is no where to go but down....and they are still sinking even lower with every new supposed horror film that caters to the 13 year old mantality.......

I personally dont hate it, but I dont think its the best thing since sliced bread. The knockoffs it has spawned is enough to choke half the world. Every five minutes another Scream ripoff would be made. But, its died down.
But what really pisses me off is when people refuse to like a movie because its made after Scream. They say its "teeny-bopper" or some other bull. Some, yes, some have a quality that imitate Scream. But to say that about every friggin movie is just annoying. If you truly dont like a movie, OK. But if you say it just because its made in the past 7 years...its rediculous. O well.

I like Scream, although I despise the sequels. Scream came at a time where there wasn't any horror films coming to the cinema, and I found it to be quite enjoyable.

People hate Scream because of what it spawned. By that logic, I should detest Halloween -- for from it came Friday the 13th, a film that makes me want to puke.

I have nothing against scream. I liked it but the sequals were slightly suspect. It should have kept as an originaln but a sequal was obvious. As what has been said they hate it for what it has spawned.

1-st was good, 2-nd ok, but the third was rubbish..... I myself don`t like them in general because they are so damn mainstream.....and targeted to the stupid teenager audience....And they don`t have any supernatural aspects, which I love in horror movies....And I just don`t dig slashers.....the 80`s slashers I can stand though. Probably because they were somewhat supernatural: Jason became a zombie, Freddy was a supernatural monster from the start and Leatherface was just so brutal and sick......
As I said though, Scream 1 itself is pretty good.

As a huge mega super fan of the giallo/slasher genre for me it is impossible not to like Scream but I know that now there a lot of bad slashers.
Only a few are really good in my book :
Anatomy ( german slasher, very good ) Ripper : Letter From Hell ( too underrated this - one ) U2 ( yes, it is better than the first - one, the first murder alone is worth 5/10 and the rest is not bad at all )

I agree 100%. I didn't hate the first one but for me it wasn't really a true slasher pic and certainly not a horror. It was more like a teen pic with a few frights. I would have loved a bit more terrror in it. But then it wouldn't have been Scream.
I hate the scene where the guy stands up and begins 2 explain the rules.

I think theyre good for watching with a few friends if you are seeing it for the first time, cos its fun to try and guess who is the killer. I dont really rate it as a horror movie, more of a "Who done it".

the second one was decent, especially for a sequel.
the third one was really dumb, except the soundtrack. i liked it.

A lot of people hate Scream because of all its deformed children like Valentine and Urban Legends: Final Cunt.

I like all of the Screams. Granted, only the first one is remotely scary, but I did appreciate the usage of Sarah Michelle Gellar in the 2nd and Parker Posey in the 3rd. I dont even think that some of the movies it spawned were all too bad. I liked IKWYDLS and ISKWYDLS. I dunno. I didnt think they were terrible. Now, Urban Legend, the idea behind it was good, it just needed more work. Its kind of like people blaming New Kids on the Block for the Backstreet Boys. Sure, it makes sense and yes they both sucked, but did one really spawn the other after that long period of time? Think about it.

I didn't dislike scream for some kind of boycott/purpose/message...honest!!!
I just didn't care for the movie for the reason of: I didn't like the damn thing. :p
As for why...well, there's a large list of reasons. While the acting was done well I don't care for Neve Campbell and I absolute abhore the man at the end (one of the villians, the goofy guy, his name constantly escapes my head - probably a repressed memory!). I didn't find it chilling at all. The suspense scare-tactics weren't interesting, nail-biting, or anything close. The plot itself was different but not a blockbuster IMHO. I didn't see the end coming, but not guessing the ending of a movie doesn't necessarily make it a good film.
I thought this movie itself was as mainstream as it could get...in a bad way. There's decent/excellent mainstream and then there's embarrasing. You can guess which one this one falls to for me...

I enjoyed Scream and Scream 3 but hated Scream 2
I think people started hating the Scream series because it started the whole teen phenomenon and prompted hollywood to go for the less gore mysery approach.
Also it could mean Dawn of the Dead remake starring Tyrese, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake, and Freddy Prine Jr. as the biker

In my opinion, there's a few reasons.
One: Scream reinvented and reinvigorated the horror genre (anyone who calls this film a comedy... ooh... not going to finish that sentence... :p :p ), and from that came the copy cat films. The numreous numerous copycat films. People only like so much of a good thing... which leads me to:
Two: I don't care what anyone says. No one will ever be able to convince me that there isn't a thing called "Popular Backlash". It happens all the time. When something gets big, and is hugely popular, is adored by a ton of people, all of the sudden, there's this huge backlash from people saying "It was good, but it wasn't that good" which soon turns into "It sucks ass! Why do people like it??" It happens with everything pop culture related. Look at Titanic. THE highest grossing film of all time... the same two people didn't go see this film 4 billion times... millions upon millions went to see it... now, anywhere I turn, all I hear is "What the fuck? That movie was so terrible!!!" I bet if Titanic had grossed like 17 million dollars, people would be saying it's the best hidden gem ever. The same in my opinion, applies to Scream. If it had stayed a small tiny movie, that died out after 15 million dollars, horror fans (most anyways) would consider this to be a crowning achievement in horror film making. Not to mention it wouldn't have spawned the copycats, but that's a different story.
I've seen it happen with tons of things. Just look at musicians, look at big popular films. Some aren't affected, but most are. It's the "popular backlash". I've even done it. I'll think something is decent, but not overly great, and then a trillion people begin to like it, and all of the sudden, for no reason, I'll hate it.
(okay, rambling... moving on)
Three: Some people do see it as copying other movies, such as Halloween and Friday the 13th. Well, my response is, do you hate Halloween? Because Halloween basically took what it had from Black Christmas. Do you hate Friday the 13th? Because that's basically a direct knock off of Halloween. Hell, we could even trace Nightmare on Elm Street back to films like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist if you wanted to. So why hate one film for being similar (and really, okay, yes, the stalking of the teenagers is the same, but they're written in two completely utterly different ways... the writing isn't even comparable between Scream and Halloween) but like another one that is guilty of the same crime?
Okay, shit, instead of listing reasons I began to rant... sorry dudes.... my bad!!! lol!! :D
Anyways, in that jumble, those are my own personal ideas for why Scream is all of the sudden hated by so many (yet was loved and adored by almost all after the second weekend at the box office... Not to mention it was the little film that could at the beginning. Starting at nothing, and the catching on, and all of the sudden becoming huge. People like a good success story for the underdog... that factor has since worn off).

I like the first Scream but the only problem I have with it are a major part of the fans are teenagers who've never seen the classics and those people who worship it make me mad. But to those of us who've seen the good stuff (tcm, halloween, hellraiser, a nightmare on elm street, phantasm etc) who like and have respect for the movie I have no problem with it. I think it is a good film but Craven, to the new horror crowd, is gonna be known for Scream, and this is a sad fact. Personally, I think Craven is a little overrated.

I never cared for the first Scream, I think the only good thing about it was Drew Barrymore's death and the many horror references. Apart from that I hated it and the other screams that followed, I just hate it. No other reason for it, I silly reason I must admit but a reason nonetheless.

It revived the slasher genre with a 100M paycheck. Because it was successful, many crappy teen slashers followed. So now everyone hates those, and the movie that spawned them due to popularity, and bringing the shit to the world. I like Scream, but dislike the upsurge in horror movies that followed. Although I really liked Final Destination

I am inclined to agree with Tommy Doyle's post. And I liked Scream. I feel if Scream had done poorly at the box office. Everyone would be loving it. But it was very popular and grossed so much money. It suddenly became the anti christ of movies very much like Titanic. But I feel Scream rejuevenated a lot of horrror films that may very well still be sitting on someone shelf collecting dust. I enjoyed Final Destination and even Urban Legends only the first one. I am not one to usually go along with the massed but I really enjoyed Scream. And I am proud to admit it.

Yes, but that's the reason he died; he didn't know enough about horror movies. They wanted Randy to die, but they couldn't let someone who knew some much about horror get killed (randy would know where the killer was) so they increased his knowledge.

Ive explained it so damn much that now I am really puking! So once more I will say that before it came out I felt that horror was in a dead direct to video slump etc. etc. So I was really looking forward to this one! That was my first mistake getting my damn hopes up when will I ever learn? Anyway the opening was great I really liked it, pretty cool had me in a suspense like mode to where I was grabbing the sofa. Music score was decent. So here I am thinking that the killer was pretty smart and when I found out who it was I was way dissapointed because this smart killer was some dumb ass teenagers and when revealed they were no longer smart and they could never have possessed the smart I saw so it was all a damn sham, it was all a lie. I felt so damn ripped off. The killers were dorks, the girls were dorks and the cop was a dork that was too much dork for me! It had some originality but alot of damn rip off qualities as well. I lived in a small town upon it's release so it was not popularity that made me hate it, it was it's substance which was generic glue that falls apart faster than Elmers. Even if it were obscure and direct to video I still would have hated it. It did nothing for horror except keep it stagnate. Sure it made money and gave birth to alot of crappy incest bastards but it did not awaken horror and this movie does not deserve all the credit it has been handed. So there you go, there is no debate for me and I will never change my mind. I hate Scream, I fucking hate it!:p

I disagree. For me, it wasnt about it's popularity. If a movie is real popular I will still like it if I like it. The extreme popularity makes me want to see it more. I didnt like scream because I didnt think it was a good movie, not for any "it changed horror" reasons.

i didn't like Scream, I know what you did last summer, or any of those teen slasher movies. it had nothing to do with it's teen popularity or its flashy abercrombie wearing actors. hell, i really liked joy ride and that had paul walker in it!!! i just don't like those kinds of movies. the plots are thin, the acting mostly sucks, and the scripts could be written by my 6 year old cousin. isn't michael bay planning to produce a remake of "scream"?

Um... The problem I found with the Scream Franchise was pretty simple. It was scared of itself. It wanted to do the 'spoof' route by dissecting 'supposedly' the genre and making it funny.
And scary...
...
*insert tumbleweed here*
...
I didn't find the series scary or funny, with a lack of gore and almost NO merits to it. They put stereotypical characters into normal situations. They had the Virgin, the Slut (although tatem was only mildly risque) the Bad Boy, the Rich Boy and the Nerd.
I tell you what would have made the series interesting. If Tatem had survived alongside Sydney, together fighting the future killers instead of that lacklustre Gail!
Stick with Halloween or Nightmare. They may have some bad seeds but they're not scared of themselves like Scream was... Dare I say it, I'd probably watch Head Cheerleader Dead Cheerleader before watching Scream again!
