I've drawn constantly since I was little, and probably have thousands of monsters by now...shoeboxes and shoeboxes full of doodles and sketches. Professional character design would be my dream job but I've never even considered pursuing it, I'm not "pro" material yet, I don't think. I've never really shown them to a board or anything before, though, and have never really gotten any opinions. I do have almost everything up at some free online art gallery that copyrights stuff for you, so noone can snatch anything (not that I think anything is snatchworthy)

I think they're good. They're not extremely original (which is almost impossible to do these days), but they're definetly good looking, the "game enemies" are way better then most of the generic enemies in cartoony 2D games these days.

Yeah, almost everything's been done. I can do totally alien monsters but I never like them as much as my more familiar, cliche'd ones. I have story ideas for a couple things, but they're all pretty stupid. The fetus with the leg, for instance, was a sketch for a story of many many different monsters inhabiting one city-sized house in a cheesy parody of silent hill and resident evil that I called "noisy tenant".

What I really like is making "sets" of things...thinking of a group (like a league of villains, or a couple different kaiju) and making that group as varied as possible within its limited size.

Here's some more crap, mostly VERY old...some of these things date back to when I was ten or eleven years old (I throw nothing out). I'm done showing stuff, just so those of you with modems as hideously slow as mine know.

Really cool, I myself have been doing the same thing (drawing monsters) since I can remember too, but I have no scanner which is a bummer, otherwise I`d put some of them up here......

A lot of those designs are quite striking. Good job. I detect a Tim Burton influence mixed in with a whole load of other stuff. Keepy it up.

Hey Scythemantis, do you have any Godzilla or Daikaiju-related artwork? I really like your array of creatures. Very surrealistic. I could just imagine them in a world of their own, terrifying strangers who come in.

I guess I'm a bit better than I thought :) I've just seen so many many creatures (I mean, sheesh, I even RPG walkthroughs for their illustrated bestiaries when I have no intention of playing the game) I'm desensitized and can't differentiate what's weird/scary anymore.

My favorite artist of all time is Hieronymus Bosch.

The dragon one is hands down the best one!! It kicks all kinds of ass!! Keep it up, show us more drawings!!

Yeah, Bosch is cool. I also like H.R. Giger and you might like to check this site (http://www.world-of-fantasy.info/default.php?cat=1&sl=art&sr=art) out. There is some great fantasy and horror artwork.

I love your artwork, Scythemantis. Would be fun to make some creature suits of some of your designs.

Ooh, that is a nice site.

I don't have much else scanned, I do have most of these things and a few more up at this elfwood.com gallery (http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/zone/j/0/j0nathan/j0nathan.html) (though I don't like the site too much) where I added backstories and silly names to a ton of monsters that were originally nameless. I've grown to like a lot of the stories and concepts even if I did come up with them on the fly, but I don't really expect a chance to make anything of them, or any of the game/movie/show I ideas I regularly think up just for fun.

I do have some Kaiju stuff actually, but not of existing ones. I set out to design ten kaiju and so far I have......two....the vampire roach and a "tar" monster (which is at the gallery but needs a re-drawing. I saw spirited away and the polluted spirit had almost the exact same slime and bubbles!)

I'd love to, but I wouldn't know where to start or how to "get in" to such an industry, wouldn't hurt to put together portfolios someday. I'd most enjoy making game enemies...

Another cool thing about some of those creatures is that they're like "little Cenobites." These guys are among my favorite:

Those came into being when I was thinking what a roster of characters for a horror fighting game might look like (there needs to be more than just the darkstalkers series) You might notice (if you visit the gallery) that the mummy head and knife hand guy are from two other batches of sketches - I splice older pictures together in ways that cover over rips/nasty mistakes on the paper. I'm so devious.

Really good job. My favorites ( I dont know how to post pictures here) would be the 2nd post you put your images up, the second sheet down with the man who has the soup bowl for a head and the mummy woman. All those are great!

OK, now guess who found a scanner after long and painful search....... That`s right, now I´m gonna torture you with my drawings and gigry-migry (I didn`t mean that you tortured me or anything, it just means I will)....... Many of them don`t have so good quality, because I`ve drawn them into a notebook, where you can see another image behind it.....

Because for some reason I can`t directly post them here...(could someone please tell me how could I do that - the images are in geocities and when I post them here, all you can see is those boxes with x-s) I`ll put some links here.....

Wait, that doesn`t seem to work either......I`ll try to figure something out now.....

Ok, sorry for the mess I caused, but now I made a temporary webpage for the pictures.....
and it`s here (http://www.geocities.com/psyhhohell/pictures/omalooming/index.html)

Ahhh, well....For anyone who is interested, I put all my scanned artwork up riiiiight here (http://www.geocities.com/hullumaja/omalooming/galerii/index.html) ......and by the way, did that last guy comment my or Scythemantises work...?

Scythe, I actually visited your site awhile back out of curiosity. I love your stuff. The vampire cockroach kaiju rocks!

Scythemantis
06-07-2003, 10:16 PM
That stuff's awesome Xipe. I'd comment on specific ones but I like all of them :)

If you were referring to me, Frank, yeah, the second one might be confusing. It's supposed to be a creature that causes amnesia. It's big, colorless and the general idea of its appearance is basically a naked, slimy, flightless, legless barn owl.

I am very impressed by the artwork I'm seeing here. Kudos. :)

Maybe there is more of you hidden artists out there, who would like to post their horror art work here....and could someone please explain to me why I can`t post my pictures here....they are in geocities and all I get when I post them here is those annoying cubes with x-s.....

Well I'm pretty good at drawing, but my scanner is kinda screwed. It works,it just takes a while for it too. So I will take a few poor quality images from my webcam I guess. This one is a drawing of Sadakos eye from Ring.

Xipe Totec....some of your drawings look like something from THE THING

Ultimate_evil's are pretty sweet to....love the skins

Scythemantis
06-08-2003, 02:17 PM
Oh, post your own stuff to your heart's content. It's not hijacking :)

What did you make that kickass zombie sculpture/model thing out of and how big is it?

Xipe - geocities doesn't allow outside linking anymore. They used to, but stopped about two years ago. Angelfire and many other popular free webspace providers did the same thing around the same time.

Xipe Totec

Wow the_ultimate_evil has some really cool things there......and yeah I knew Angelfire did it, but I have linked geocities pictures and they have worked....

thanks the zombie is about 3 feet in length,2.5 ft wide and about 2 ft tall

the base is wood, the soil as paint expanding foam sprinkled with seeds and lentils, the body was a 2 litre coke bottle and the arms are polistrine balls and and blocks that i carved

on the skins one i get a few he-man ones outta the way i plan on doing some of the horror icons

Xipe Totec....some of your drawings look like something from THE THING

Well, I`ve used many things for inspiration (mostly H.R. Gigers and Rob Zombie`s artwork, Silent Hill 2, Thrill Kill), but I´ve never used The Thing for inspiration.......good idea though.....

By the way, I just wonder if other artists on this page use to listen to music while drawing......it really helps me and I`d like to know....

Scythemantis
06-10-2003, 01:29 PM
Music helps a ton. Esspecially if it matches the mood of whatever you're drawing. Oingo Boingo is one of my favorite bands.
