La Strada (The Street)

Year: 1954
Director: Federico Fellini
Cast: Anthony Quinn (Zampano), Guilleta Massina (Gelsomina), Richard Baseheart (Fool)
Running Time: 115m.

Synopsis:
An "artiste" Zampano (Quinn) buys his new assistant Gelsomina (Massina - Fellini's wife at the time) for 10,000 lires coz Rosa (her sister) has died. Gelsomina is different from other people, she's got a screw loose but is very pleasent, cute and extremely good hearted as opposed to the aggresive, arrogant and insensitive Zampano whose act consists of him braking an iron chain by expandin his chest. They travel around Italy, until they join a circus where they meet with Fool (Baseheart) who can control himself and makes fun of Zampano.

An excellent character study from the excellent director Fellini. Quinn and Massina are amazing as the leads as is the supporting cast. It's a wonderful joy of a film that is both funny and very sad. Some will not the religous symbolism and Fellini's view on human nature through the film and all Fellini should try and rent this wonderful film.

Definately one of the best from the director and easily comes into consideration for my top lists of movies. Nino Rota's music is wonderful (he's the man who became famous with the Godfather tune) and the lighting, editing and technicalities are wonderfully stylised by one of the best directors of the 20th century.

Score:
10/10.
