All three trilogies are really different from each other, and so it's unfair to compare them.
IMO they all have their strengths and their weaknesses, but it's up to the individual on which is the best.
I seriously doubt that the filmmakers of these trilogies make these movies thinking "I'm going to put in more special effects and try to outdo the other two trilogies!". I think they just care about their own movies and only make them with the intention of them being good.
But that's just my worthless $0.02

They're the most spectacular, the most commercialized, the most talked about trilogies right now, perhaps ever. All three have stories and plots that take their roots in common myth, legend and folklore. All three talk about a One, be it Anakin, Neo or a Ring-Bearer. All three are high-budget flicks. All three are the pure translation of the vision of their makers -- George Lucas, the Wachowski brothers, Peter Jackson. All three are of fantastic genres (sci-fi and fantasy). All three are pushing back the limits of special effects known today.
There's a lot more stuff I could think of, but I think those are reasons enough to explain why everybody's talking about these flicks and comparing them, man. :)

i love all three franchises, and i agree...
IT IS POSSIBLE TO LIKE ALL THREE! I hate seeing people choosing sides and defending it to death.

I agree that you can like all three, I do.
But I love it when the different "geeks" fight on other message boards. It's funny to hear the Star Wars geeks bash the LOTR geeks, and vice versa, because they call each other geeks, and then make references to the other trilogy that only a geek could know (like the names of every single extra in all 3 movies).

Hold on, we haven't seen the last episode in each trilogy (depending on which Star Wars trilogy it is you refer to)... hopefully each third part will be shit and everybody will hate these stinking fucking corporation films.

I think it's a psychological phenomenon that makes most of us all WISH and HOPE that we are part of something better.
Really, all of the cross-franchise berating is really just another way of saying "mine is bigger than yours."
While Logan has shown how the movies can be compared, I think the most worthwhile point of this rant is the simple fact that fans vicariously use these movies as a basis for their own stature.
It is important to remember that you don't really hear too much stuff like, "Oh I think Ang Lee's adaptations are much better than Wayne Wangs!!" While both have adapted similar stories, with similar types of casts, and both have done dramas.
So, it's not really the movies commonality that bring forth such rant-worthy behaviors -- It's exactly the people he's talking about. The fans who berate other similar movies. It's plain and simple, no need to complicate it.

I hate it as well. Richard Gere and his hamster know that Star Wars is the best.
