I was just thinking about how a lot of the horror movies that are loved by so many tend to be low-budget:
Evil Dead
Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Not only those, but there are so many 1980's era horror movies that are poorly made, but have huge cult followings (the genre, not necessarily specific movies).
Does anyone agree that there may be a connection between low-budget horror and amateur porn?
Low budget horror tends to have more of a following than high budget horror (ie Evil Dead vs Scream). Amateur porn tends to have more of a following that normal porn.
Low budget horror tends to be 'grainier' than big budget films, just like amateur porn vs regular porn.
Perhaps it's because the graininess in low budget horror makes the film seem more 'real', and therefore more exciting. The graininess in amateur porn also emphasizes the fact that it's real (even if it isn't). This 'realness' allows the viewer to feel that they are watching something 'dirty' that may have actually happened.
So, perhaps indie horror films are actually fulfilling their horror-based fantasies (ie, murder, monsters, fright) by watching low budget horror films?
This is all just generalization, but I felt like sharing. What do you think?
