View Full Version : And that's how I learned to trust Arrow...

A little cautionary tale if you may...

It's Friday night. Since I have no life and on that particulary night I don't even have my DVD player with me, I decided to take a few videos home with me from work. I took King Of New York, because it looked like it would kick ass. And reading Arrow's review for Teenage Caveman, I decided to take it, since it looked like it would be a great turkey with a few tit shots. When I got home, I started watching King Of New York. The tape was in such a bad condition I couldn't watch it more than 3 minutes.

Ok, then I put in Teenage Caveman. And boy was Arrow right. Aside the ok gore effects and a pretty cute redhead, this movie was shit. I mean, the original is by Roger Corman, the man who can make movies fast. I think they did Teenage Caveman in a few days. I haven't seen that one, but after this one I want to. I must be a masterpiece. At least compared to this.

The moral of the story is, that if Arrow says the movie sucks, then it really must suck. Godawful movie really. I felt I needed a shower after watching it. And the worst part is that I missed "Touch Of Evil" watching this crap...

I trusted Arrow after watching Halloween 3, 5, and 7. They all sucked, even worst than Arrow said they did.

I trust arrow 95 percent of the time. There are some times where I do disagree though.

Personally, I liked Teenage Caveman. It's got more interesting ideas and a more interesting overall concept than many horror/sci-fi films I could mention - and makes some observations about religion, the abuse of power and such. Richard Hillman hams his role up as 'Neil' perfectly with some amusing overacting, and a memorable villain is often a great thing to have in a movie of this genre. I find it a little ironic that some people condemn the film on almost moralistic grounds for its abundant nudity, when this is something they appear to crave in other films - even to the extent of giving the films they review their own little 'nudity rating'! ;) Seriously though, I think it's a very underrated film.

Nahhh the movie sucked, it felt like an excuse to film young actors touching themselves...

I trusted arrow after watching Lost Souls and gave it a rating similar to his, i also like a lot of the same films he has reviewed and given praise to, and thanks to him i have given films a chance that i would not usually watch and have enjoyed them a lot.

Liked More:-
Dagon
Final Fantasy
Halloween 3,5
Nightmare on Elm Street 6
Phantasm 3
Pitch Black
Relic

Liked Less:-
Anaconda
Jaws 4
Poltergeist 3
Valentine

I've heard this over and over. There wasn't a single actor or actress in this movie who was under the age of 16 (in fact I don't think any were under 18) so what's the problem? If they had all been in their mid-twenties would it have been more acceptable? They were old enough to understand what they were signing up for and no laws were broken so I don't see the problem with them showing a bit of skin. I've read to many reviews of this movie that stop just short of calling it kiddie porn.

Anyway...a more serious response to this thread than my earlier post is required.

Nine times out of ten I agree with Arrow's reviews and even when I don't I at least get where he's coming from and understand why he arrived at a different opinion to mine. This is pretty much the only movie site I frequent on a daily basis. Mainly for the boards i'll admit but I do check both Joblo and Arrow's section for any updates.

That's a bold statement! I don't even trust myself with my own beer. Anyway, I mostly agree with Arrow's opinions on films and have used the site many times as a reference before purchasing films.

Me too! But I do disagree with certain of his choices. I actually disliked Suspiria, Evil Dead 2 and Halloween but I'm still baffled that he gave The Toxic Avenger such a low score. To each his own I guess...

I have been checking out The Arrow for a while now. And there is not to many occassions I have disagreed with him. I have even just outright bought movies he suggested without seeing a preview and goinfg solely off his rating. And I ended up loving them. And I have added them as permanent fixtures to my collection. So I totally trust The Arrow. :D

I don't think so. I trust John with a LOT of stuff. His opinions are bang on (most of the time). The only times I can think I screamed at him were his reviews of AoD (3.5 out of 4? C'MON!!) and Re-Animator (what would H.P. Lovecraft say?) Other than that, The Arrow's pretty good, although he STILL hasn't reviewed The Thing or Romero's Living Dead Trilogy. I told ya, man! If you stopped oogling Sheri Moon (oh yeah!) you could've had that review up by now.

I agree, I love the arrow's reviews. Most of the time I skip over page reviews because they don't hold my interest. The way he breaks them up is great, and his opinions always made sense. I dont' agree with some of his reviews, such as the leprechaun as someone else already stated, but he explains the reasons he doesn't enjoy the movie to where you can see where he's coming from. Overall I agree with his ratings, however. :D

Arrow is one of the main reasons I'm into horror, his reviews are perfect imo, I've even tried writting a couple times because of arrow. Great guy.

I didn't understand Arrow's review of the Toxic Avenger, it is one of my favorites and there have been times when I didn't agree with his reviews.

But, he is the only reviewer that I trust, only with movies of course, not beer or women.
