Here is a common scene you see in many teen slashers (Scream) and psychological thrillers (The Ring). Both have tiny little differences that separate them but are both similar.
(Teen slasher)
Phone rings, protagonist picks it up, receives threat from killer, cusses out killer, and hangs up phone. Killer calls up again, is more threatening, and protagonist hangs up again. Killer calls again, and protagonist yells "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!!" but alas, it is only her boyfriend/best friend.
(Psychological thriller "The Ring" "Mothman Prophecies")
Phone rings, protagonist hears either a scary voice or a bunch of scary noises, hangs up. Phone rings again, protagonist doesn't pick it up, Phone rings once again, protagonist picks it and says "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!" but it's only his/her ex-husband/wife calling to check up on them. Protagonist hangs up phone, and it rings again. Protagonist unplugs phone and throws it on the floor, but oh my, what's this! The phone is still ringing, even when it's unplugged from the phone jack! How scary is that?! Bleh.
These two scenes are starting to become more common.
