This is downright sad, but, I barely own movies at all. I have less than ten! Oddball things, Naked Lunch, one Godzilla flick, Angry Red Planet, Joe's Apartment, couple others. My girlfriend has a huge video/dvd collection though.

the shining for its visual flare and downright creepy vibe

the evil dead trilogy for its brutal simplicity and comic relief

dead alive for its blood, blood, and even more blood

an american werewolf in london for its awesome contribution to the werewolf story

hellraiser for its twisted and sadistic plot.

night of the living dead, just so they know their roots

texas chainsaw massacre for its realism and gritty shock value

the exorcist, mainly because it's the scariest horror film ever

other honorable mentions: nightmare on elm st., the thing, in the mouth of madness, return of the living dead, and from dusk til dawn.

Halloween minus 3..I have 3 simply because I can't stand to have incomplete sets. It still sits on my shelf with the complete set. But it is still in the wrapper and has never been opened.
The Exorcist
Pumpkin Head
Amityville
Session9
Signs
Sleepaway Camp
Friday The 13th all of them with maybe the exception of JasonX. This two would fall under my I hate incomplete sets thing. I'm to anal I guess.

Rosemary's Baby
The Omen

Wow. Too bad there are no good horror movies before 1968, huh? (That is, if you include the "piece of shit" original NOTLD. )

Anyway, how about:

"Frankenstein"
"Bride of Frankenstein"
"The Mummy"
"The Wolf-Man"
"King Kong"
"Dracula"
"Nosferatu"
"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"
"Metropolis"
"Psycho"
"Night of the Demon"
"The Cat People"
"Curse of the Cat People"

How the hell is it a piece of shit? I say it was pretty damn good considering it was made in a short amount of time on a damn shoe string budget with actors who were not really even actors but friends. And for it's time it really was different. So what if it is old hey everything gets old eventually. So what if it did not have much gore it had some intelligence to it . It is a good story dude! Besides how many times are we going to call it a piece of shit in the same thread?
I elect a different piece of shit title be named now!:p

I love the original NOTLD. I was being sarcastic in regards to noahx29's comment on it. Hence, the rolleyes.

I elect "Blood Feast" as the next piece of shit title.

If I wrote down my list, I'd be here at the computer for a good 15 minutes. I would think that any self-respecting horror movie junkie would have to have the Friday The 13th series (minus Part V and Part VIII, but hey what do I know), the Nightmare On Elm Street series (yes, even Freddy's Dead if you're into seeing a low point of the series), the FIRST Halloween (anything after Part 2 is crapola), and George Romero's Living Dead Trilogy. I could put down a helluva lot more, but I don't feel like boring people. . .

Damnit man this will be hard. I usually dont respond to these "favorites", "non-favorites" etc lists because I have too many favorites, dislikes, etc, but I'll try this one out.

That every horror fan should own (not necessarily because they are favorites)

The evil dead series - They are spoken of to much to not watch them. Their directing style, how they are referenced to in other movies, their huge hit and impact on the horror genre, how they have never been redone or copied.

Nightmare on elm st - Its up to you for the entire series, but I would consider it worthy to possess the original, the third, and new nightmare

Friday the thirteenth - Jason made a big hit, own at least one of the early ones

Halloween - for the same reason as the previous two

The howling - the best werewolf movie around in my opinion :D Avoid sequels, except five

Candyman - A different sort of horror, well made, acted, a brilliant plot

Hellraiser - The first 2, for the same reasons as the noes, friday, and halloween series

Alright I am tired of naming reasons:

Jaws
Poltergiest
The Shining - original
The Amityville Horror
Night of the living dead
Dracula (some version)
The Exorcist
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Child's Play
IT
The lost boys
Near Dark
Interview with the vampire
Fright Night
Alien
Aliens
John Carpenters the Thing

Again, I am not basing these on favorites really, but more of what I consider a big impact on the horror genre to some degree, and what most horror lovers should own. We all have our own opinions of course...

Seriously, why is no one naming the roots of horror? Everybody's listing good flicks, but where is "Frankenstein?" Where's "Dracula?" Horror didn't begin in the last half of the century.

But the guinea pig series has no snuff films. Flower of flesh and blood was accused of being real and even the FBI were fooled, and horribly embarrased when a "making of" was released AND hosted by the actress who played the victim. The other guinea pig films actually tell stories, so they don't even qualify as "fake" snuff. More recent ones are comedies. I haven't seen any of them I just know their history.
