View Full Version : People telling you to move in movie theatres

Have you ever been sitting in a great seat at the theatre, with a mostly full aisle, waited for 20 minutes because you got there a full half hour early to insure a good seat, then some jackass starts talking to everyone in your aisle trying to get them to move so they and a couple other people can also have a good seats and sit together?
This happened when myself, mother and stepfather went to see The Italian Job. We got there over a half hour early, got some great seats, then 5 minutes before showtime at a 7:00 showing on a saturday, 3 people show up and start shuffling the whole aisle so they can sit together. What was worse is that there were OTHER places in the theatre they could of sat, just our aisle happened to be the best. So they hassle us, and when they asked my mom if she would please move, she said that no, she wasn't moving. Said person immediately thanked her (obviously not really listening, just *expecting* her to move), then stopped for a half second and looked at her again with a look of pure horror, as if someone not doing what she said was unbelievable and said "You WON'T?".
She kind of just stood there for a second and sort of mumbled, doing the yuppie impression of "Well, I never!".
Sadly to say, my mother did eventually move over and we got all crowded in. And, of course, the woman was sitting next to me and said idiotic things all of a sudden during the movie -
**miniscule, trailer revealed, Italian Job spoiler**
when the truck is driving towards where they have explosives to sink it through the highway she said something "So that's what how they'll do it!!!".
**end**
I've had people ask me to move before, and I don't mind it if there is no other way for them to sit together. But them doing that when there were still several places for them to sit together (forcing you to have people sitting by you no matter what, which is somewhat uncomfortable because of shared armrests), and how they totally expected us to immediately cater to their whims, really bothered me.
If you MUST sit together, especially on a friggin Saturday night showing of a Summer blockbuster, show up EARLY you lazy bastards.
What do you guys think, of such pushy people?

This has happened numerous times. A bunch of middle school kids came in, asked us to move down a couple seats, and we politely did. Then it turns out they had plenty of room to sit down. The kids leaned toward us and very sarcastically went, "Good Job!"
Then it happened again at a pep rally at my school. I sat in a completely empty bleacher area, to wait for my friends. Then people show up and start taking up space around me. Before long some jackass is telling me to move. "Fuck you!" I say. "I was here first!" Of course I didn't want to fight so I didn't say that. Besides, I was gonna have to move anyway to find my friends. But still, what an asshole...

When a friend and I went to see Anger Management, the theaer was packed, some idiot and his chick asked me and my friend to move from basically the only two seats left. There was some near the front. He asked if him and his chick could sit there, I just laughed for about a minute, turned serious and said no, and then he was tryin to pick a fight so I told him to go fuck himself and ge tthe fuck out of the way before I hail an usher to get him kicked out of the goddamn theatre. You know the type; punk kids.

Here in Finland you get the number of the seat when you buy the ticket. Nobody ever asks anyone to move.

Yeah, I've heard about that. Do you get a better placement if you buy your ticket early?

I've heard of that also. It's a good idea and should be used here.

I HATE THAT!!! Not my problem that you came late....That's the unwritten rules of going to a movie theatre. COME EARLY! I myself Matinee individual always go early if and when possible & dart for the auditorium. The center is always the choice areas of getting the ultimate movie experience. Theres always the latercomers. It NEVER phases me when they are analyzing. They have that puzzling look trying to find THEIR spot when its grdually filling up leaving pockets here and there. PICK A SEAT AND MAKE USE OF IT DAMMIT! ANd if you ask me, "Sorry, can u move one down?" I'll bark back.... HELL NO!!!!!
Sorry to be bitter but I am not suffering my choice seat for your personal gain. TOO FRICKIN BAD!!!!!

Same here..., bar midnight showings.
I always request a couple of aisle seats myself...and I've never had any trouble.

Oh Tuuka, you touch upon what was one of my finer moviegoing experiences in Edinburgh. Being the Ugly American I am, I bought my tickets and stared like an idiot into the little computers and said "We...we have...assigned seating?" It's a gorgeous system, and it keeps everything fair.
On topic, I have been asked to move in the past, and I have if I would want someone to do the same for me in the same circumstances. When I saw The Hours there weren't 4 seats together left in the house (a good 15 minutes before starting time), but there were 2 each a row apart. The couple in 2 of the seats obligingly moved back a row, and freed up the 4 seats for us.
If it's possible, I always try to move, but only if the people aren't asking just to have the best seats in the house, and honestly can't find one.

I envy the assigned seating thing. Only operas, and some concerts are in the U.S.
And the seats you get is it always together? Do they ever give you seats where you find out your in one row & the other ticket is the next/another row? That kinda sucks if it ever happened to anyone? ANYONE who lives outside/visited outside of the U.S. care to reply? :D

Nope, won't move. I'm not anal about many things, but about punctuality I am.
If you're late, deal with it. I had people removed from a theater yesterday because they couldn't find seats together, so they decided to sit ON THE STAIRS, IN THE AISLE.
Seperate rant. Go read and reply.

What a bunch of idiots. They would of gotten kicked out eventually anyway as that's a violation of safety protocols, not too mention rude since you're blocking the way of ANYONE who tries to leave.
I won't move, either. If I showed up early to get a good seat, then I'm not moving so some guy can sit in the middle row with two of his cousins from Omaha.

to add to my earlier post, i wouldnt move if someone else asked me. i am always about 15/20 minutes early for a movie, so once i am seated, i am there for the duration. woe betide the person that attempts to get me out of my seat for any reason, bar a fire or impending tidal wave....

Naturally.
Nearly all theatres in here allow you to order your ticked in advance with internet. The netsite shows you the theatre from upwards and you can choose the seats you want. It doesn't allow you to choose the seats that have already been taken by someone else. You just have to go and get the pre-ordered tickets in the theatre at least one hour before the show. If you don't do so, the seats are free again for someone else to take.
Usually I order the tickets a day or two in advance. It's a really good system. For example if there are 5-6 of your friends with you, just log to the netsite and choose the seats you want to yourself and your friends.

Well, we have the Arclight Theaters in Hollywood where you purchase tickets beforehand with assigned seating. There is an usher at every entrance to the theater who will help you find your seat. Very la-de-da. The drawback is that the ticket prices are fairly high ($11.00 weekdays, $14.00 weekends).
I never have been asked to move nor would I ask somebody to move their seats for me. That's just rude. Apparently, common courtesy is dead. :o

How 'bout this: a nearly empty theater. I've got the best seat in the house. One minute before the movie commences (Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) a couple comes in and takes the seats right behind me. They slouch and kick my seat for the duration of the movie. I'm pissed like hell, refuse to move.
Never went to see The Two Towers... :)

That's never happened to me (yet) but if it ever does, and im in my favourite seat, and theres enough room elsewhere, i doubt id move, then they'd have to sit somewhere else,
i mean, why the hell should i move, i got there before them, found a seat i liked and then they want to sit where i am just so they can sit together.....i think not
and if they get physical, i'll damn sure get them kicked out :D

I go alone a lot with my notebook but I always get there early. If it's obvious that it's a crush and I can help out I will offer to move to make room for a couple.
But you're right about the whiners. The dipshits who show up five seconds before the opening credits and whine loudly "this is ridiculous I can't sit that close" or "I'm getting my money back."
Go do it, bitch, shut up and get out!

Sorry for the late reply but i think this is an great topic. I think the idea of getting assigned seats is good, and i think the first 100 (in a 300+ theater) should have the choice of where they want their seats. I hate when you get there early, get a kick ass seat and yes, when a bunch of tardy people walk in , your expected to move. The same thing happens at the drive ins, the owner walks around and asks people to move their cars closer so he can fit more people in:rolleyes:

I'm not sure I get this, are you talking about if someone wants you to move over a seat or two? I'd have no problem with that.

When I went to the sneak preview of 28 Days Later this last friday with two of my friends I made sure that we were there at least 20 minutes beforehand (because I bought advanced tickets and didn't have to worry about buying at box office) and we still could not find three seats together. We were forced to ask people to move down the row or to move seats so that we could sit together. I think that there is nothing wrong with asking people to move when you are basically forced to do so.

Sneak previews have different rules. You're lucky you even got in. I showed up an hour early for a sneak preview of Enter the Dragon and didn't even get in.
I partially agree though. My point was partly that the people who asked everyone in our row to move COULD of sat elsewhere. They just said, aha, to get really good seats all we have to do is annoy everyone in this row and make their seats worse.
