Hehe... Marilyn wasn't acting, the was legit terrified (read up my friends, or watch the DVD with commentary). Ahh, the stories about the filming of TCM. Bet there'll be some good horror stories from the remake too, but mostly about how much a DICK Michael Bay is.

The best reaction I have ever seen (and in my opinion, not from a terrific actor) goes to Sean Pertwee in Event Horizon. His expression upon discovering...
POSSIBLE SPOILER
The bomb in the locker is priceless.

Some of the best acting where the person is obviously terrified out of their wits is:
Ellen Burstyn in The Exorcist through all the scenes with Reagan's possession. The woman was convincing.
Sigourney Weaver at the end of Alien when she is in the get up and is standing there breathing in fear, and turns her head to see the aliens arm coming towards her. She acted so well there that, " Wow ", went through my mind. Incredible.
I thought Amy Steel did a great job with portraying fear in Friday the 13th 2.
Ashley Lawrence in Hellraiser (the original)...very very well acted. Her fear scenes in the room with Frank and the cenobites, when the engineer was chasing her through the walls, with the female cenobite coming after her up the stairs...
These all are incredible actresses, and it is my personal opinion that horror would be the hardest genre to act convincingly in.

I thought Naomi Watts in the ring did a pretty believable job being scared, and props to neve campbell in Scream 1 and 2. She didnt have much to do in part 3 though.

Flack or no flack for this post, I'm still going to voice my opinion.
I think that one of the best performances of fear that I have ever witnessed on film was Drew Barrymore's portrayal of Casey Becker in the beginning of "Scream".
Watching that scene, it's scary to see how utterly terrified Drew plays the character and I think that is a big part of why it's such a successful sequence.

How about Jess (Oliva Hussey) from Black Christmas? She truly looked terrified when she discovers where the killer is.
