Hey guys,
I just bought a pretty decent computer (finally!) and was kinda bummed out to find that I couldn't burn DVDs straight from a regular DVD like you can with CDs. I then discovered the idea of VCDs, you know, burning DVD movies onto CD-R discs. I was wondering how many of you out there have viewed VCDs and whether the worth the trouble or not. Thanks!

If you do it right then they can be near-dvd quality. Only as good as the quality of the video file minus about 5 percent.

I have a couple VCDs in my collection, and the quality is probably not quite as good as VHS -- the image is not as sharp, and sometimes pixilates.

Yeah, it depends on the source of the video file you are burning. I burn home movies captured off my home DV camera and backed up a couple of my dvds, and depending how many CD-Rs I want to use, the quality is pretty good. I think im gonna break down and buy a dvd burner, which can hold 4.39 gigabytes (meaning the quality will be damn near exactly the same as the original video source) so I can make some cash burning and selling movies my friends have made. Seems like there would be a descent profit there... Shit.. I've started rambling. This thread really has nothing to do with movies themselves. But I, dunno.

So, if I burn from my DVD drive to a CD-R it should be OK, but not as good as the DVD? I wish I'd known you could REALLY burn DVD movies when I bought my DVD-burner. Sorry if this thread pisses anyone off, I know it doesn't have anything to do with horror, but I might be burning horror movies:p Mods, I won't take offense if you dumb this beeyatch!

It depends on the dvd burner you have and whether it is compatible with your player, and the media/software you use to burn. But if you have a dvd burner the quality of the dvd media will have near the exact quality of the original movie.

I'm just a little confused and, for anyone else who might be reading this, I won't take up anymore web space :) after this post... I've got a DVD burner on my computer. I just can't seem to download DVD movies (ones friends own) onto my PC so that I can burn them onto blank DVDs. It always gives me an error message. Is this normal or am I PC-retarded? I originally thought that it would be just like burning a music CD. Anyone with anymore information would be a great help

I'm just curious, but would burning friends movies be illegal? If they made the movie themselves and want dvd copies, and no one except them has rights, and you have their permission, how can this be illegal? It is sort of in the same ballgame, to me, as duplicating your home videos.

?!? Or did this entire post just fly over my head ? :D

Thanks for all of your help, guys and gals. It was as simple as me just not having the proper software. Once I got that it was as simple as hitting enter. Maybe I should take a PC class?
