Marketing Adult T.V. Shows at kids.

I'm talking about Japaneese anime. Now, I have nothing wrong with it being dubbed into english-some people are too lazy to read subtitles-but why do you have to water it down so much? The orginal writers intended for these shows to be for an ADULT audience why change them into kiddy fair so gooey it makes the Care Bears look like Gremiliens? Take Sailor Moon-the dubbing is bad enough as it is but it gets worse. In the orginal show, there are gay and lesbien relationships and since children would be traumatized if they saw such a thing american writers turn boys into girls and vice versa. On Dragon Ball which in it's original form features hard core sex(THAT'S obviously edidted out) they have a really stupid edit. Instead of saying,"I'm going to kill you." They say,"I'm going to send you to another dimension."

I even heard of Pokemon episodes being banned and I'm not just talking about the one that caused seizures.

I know America is capable of making good childrens cartoons(Sponge Bob anyone?) so why do they have to turn Japan's adult cartoons into show better suited for preschoolers?

A common misconception about anime is that it is intended for adults. While there are some, most animation in Japan is geared towards children. The reason people think they are editors is because some subtitled sequences are done by pirates, who don't know the original scripts, or there are parodies and jokes made at the expense of shows like Sailor Moon, which often show graphic sex. Although, in actuality, the show contains no sex.

There's anime for adults and kids, but as Grim said, most of it is mainly aimed at kids.

Dragon Ball Z, for instance, is a children's show.

Rurouni Kenshin, a period samurai-swordsman romance currently running on Cartoon Network, was aimed at teenage girls.

The thing is, the Japanese have very different standards from the US, and for them, depicting gay and lesbian relationships in "children's" program is really no big deal. Love is love, right?

Also in terms of violence, have you ever realized how little crime there is in Japan? Yes, there are the bad areas, but live in Japan for a while, and you'll see that it's actually safe to walk to the convenience store at night. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with that "strict, traditional Asian upbringing" (tm) that so many Asian kids, myself included, are familiar with.

You're talking about the guys who have beer, porn, and panties in vending machines, for crying out loud.

In Japan Anime is just like normal movies, THers different ones for all ages. They focus ont he story more usually. But still, when they water down the shows im not too fussed as long as they release the originals (uncut) on dvd or somewhat. Cuz id like for young kids to enjoy them too.

When I first read the title, I thought you were referring to those Girls Gone Wild ads that play during times when kids are usually watching TV (I know it's not a TV show, but whatever). I'm not an anime person, so I can't comment too much. But as previously mentioned, they have wholly different standards in Japan-land, vs. the more conservative United States

Yeah, I would say in a lot of ways they're very open about sexuality, but at the same time a lot of stuff there is pretty warped. Not to say America isn't, I mean we have one of the highest rates of rape in the world, not to mention the most serial killers...

It makes it even stranger how they fuzz out pubic hair.

But until 1999, Japan had no age of consent... Now it's 13.

BTW, anyone see the last episode of Cowboy Bebop on Cartoon Network? They made everything dark.. I guess to cover the blood? Weird.

Yeah, but all things considered the cuts to Cowboy Bebop were mild. Of the episodes I watched (I don't watch it on TV much, I don't care what anyone says the dubbing of CB sucks) they cut some of the swearing, and I've heard they cut the.. Shemale's boobs if I remember.

Supposedly though, they didn't cut ANY of the other violence throughout (I didn't notice any), but the last one they made it darker for some reason.

Dragon Ball Z in Japan is primarily aged to young girls, really. The Pok'emon 'flash seizure' thing happened about three or four years ago, it was a seen with Pikachu shocked something. And the Sailor Moon thing? I'd love to see that!

There was an episode in Japan of Pokemon where James, the bad guy entered some kind of beauty topless contest. Misty, Jesse and fake boobed Jesse were among competitors. Everytime the judges passes James, he pumps up his tits more. Ash's mom eventually won.
