View Full Version : "Bowling For Columbine" Won't Be On The Hollywood Video Shelves

Now this pisses me off! I pick up ABOUT SCHMIDT and NEMESIS and casually ask the rental clerk, "when will 'Bowling For Columbine' be out?" And his reply, "oh we won't be ordering any because of its content, which I personally agree with." I was just soaked with disbelief. I then muttered in my Barry Eagan esque monatone, "well, I don't, but that's ok." He did not hear me, but I was in no mood to have any kind of argument (considering I haven't seen the film and I'd bet money he hasn't either), so I just left with my dignity and my belief of human's never overcoming their own ignorance still in tact. So how does anyone else feel about this? Questions, comments, anything.

All of hollywood video is boycotting this movie? Holy shit balls. looks like I'm looking for a new chain. Fucking Nazis.

The video store is trying to censor people from being exposed to a different point of view that the store owner (I would assume that not the ENTIRE Hollywood chain is doing this) has. It's complete horse shit, and I think everyone should agree regardless of whether you liked the film or dislike who made it.

And if anything, when people hear a movie is being boycotted in some way, it then makes us want to see the movie a lot more, which is sweet irony. ;)

Damn, if that's true, then I'm pissed oh so much!

Wasn't Bowling for Columbine suppose to come out on DVD in April and it got delayed? Anyone know why?

Because of it's Oscar success, and considering it was still playing in some cinemas (like here), I think the studio decided to delay it so it can make some more cash at the box office.

After the oscar sucess they realized that it had a more potential for dvd sales, so they delayed it to amke an ultra special featured dvd, plus newer after oscar win, filmed bonus material!

I bet they have every one of the Faces of Death series.

I hope this isn't the beginning of a very disturbing trend.

Let me decide what I do/do not need to see.

As was pointed out on this thread there is an easy answer- don't rent there anymore. Support a local independant movie rental place if one is close. On top of that, I'd inform Hollywood Video/BlockBastard/etc why you aren't going to rent there. It probably won't make one lick of a difference, but if enough people inform them to their stupidity and it makes an economic impact they may start to listen...

It's not just his Hollywood Video store. Over here in Sharon, PA I was just informed that my Hollywood video store will not be carrying Bowling For Columbine either. The manager of the store told me that "I will not carry an exploitive piece of trash like that, and you should be ashamed of yourself for even wanting to view that garbage."
Needless to say, they now have one less customer. I tore up my membership card in front of him, looked at my friend, and said in a very loud voice "Let's go Dan, it looks like the Nazi's have already taken over this store." As we were walking out both of us gave the manager the finger. So he yelled at us that we were banned from the store. Hmmm, I wonder what part of me tearing up my video card didn't he understand? Anyway, I just joined up with netflix and am much happier. So to paraphrase Bruce Willis in Hudson Hawk; "If Hollywood Video wasn't one of the largest video chains in the US, I'd say "Kiss my ass.", but since they are I will say "Slurp my butt.":D

I mean sure, they have their right as a private business, but it's still bull shit because it's attempting to censor their customers even if that's not the right terminology. I just know that I would put a movie on my shelves even when knowing it has a point of view I don't agree with if I knew I could make a profit on it.

It was already a trend at the one by me. I don't know if it's because of content though. I think the one by me just doesn't order indie films. They don't have Donnie Darko, Equilibrium, or Moonlight Mile. When I asked why they didn't have Moonlight Mile, the person at the counter just said that they weren't getting it, but that he didn't know why. This sucks. I don't want to have to start going to Blockbuster again. Although actually, I don't care that much about whether they get BFC, cause I was already planning on buying it anyway.

I've gone almost exclusively to NetFlix and upon hearing this will be tearing up both my Blockbuster and Hollywood Video membership cards.

I already own my own company and have been looking for something different, maybe I'll open up a video store of rarities, indies, uncuts, hard to find foreigns, etc....but just have to wonder if it'll actually make any money...no sense opening a whole store, hiring employee, etc. just to rent out 3-4 copies per day to a couple hardcore movie buffs ;-)))

I've had good luck with Hollywood. They're nice and they give me a break when I have a complaint. I think businesses have the right to carry what they choose to carry. I was disappointed that they never got the movie Comedian in, but it's their choice about what to carry.

I think Netflix is a great alternative for people who like the indie movies. I just dont' know if I'd watch enuf movies to justify the Netflix flat fee. I wish they had a lesser option- I'd join in a flash.

Jim H
06-18-2003, 11:09 PM
Does netflix not have ANY other options anymore? You used to be able to rent a single movie for about $5. I still have one of the movies I rented there, as due to various things I couldn't return it for some dumbass reason.

I'll be definitely avoiding Hollywood Video. I can't believe this is happening...it is censorship at its worst.

I'd recommend Greencine to those who's looking for hard to find films and rareties as well as mainstream films. I have an account with them for $15.95 for 2 discs at a time. I watch about 2 movies a week so it works out perfectly with me. Their turnaround time is great too.

I practically don't even go to Blockbuster anymore...I'll stop by occasionally for a VHS or something but that's about it. Hollywood Video is hard to find in my area.

That's not censorship. Censorship is something done directly by, or ordained by, the government or other official.

Last I checked, Hollywood Video is privately owned, and they likely don't want to carry a movie that will piss off peole in their area.

I live in a small town and Hollywood Video is the only video store for about 25 miles, they ran out all the mom & pop video stores, and now they're the only choice unless you want to go on a 1 hour round trip to get to the nearest video store. As far as I'm concerned, when you're the only place to get something and you refuse to carry something because of a personal opinion(see my above conversation with the manager of this store), that's censorship.

I'd say that's more the manager being an asshole. It isn't as if you couldn't easily procure a copy if you really wanted to see it.

BTW, how the HELL do the big chains overrun mom and pops? 99.99999% of the time the Mom and Pop's are much cheaper and have an equal selection in a smaller area due to fewer duplicates. I just don't get it. Not to mention their late fees are also usually way less.

Yes, I found a way around that with NetFlix, but still, one person having control over me, even on such a minor subject, pisses me right the hell off. As for the mom & pop chains going under, I'm not sure. There were three in my area when I joined the Army in '95, by the time I got back in '98, one went under 'cause the owner died and his widow left to live with the rest of her family in Florida. The second went under in '01, I'm not sure of the reason. The last went under about six months ago, again for reasons I'm unclear of.

It's not censorship, but it sure does suck!!

I'm all for business having the right to carry whatever they want, but it seems like a weird choice to me.

I'm not a big fan of Moore, but Bowling for Colombine was entertaining and is certainly worth carrying in the store.

the video for Sleep Now In The Fire was his best work yet, thats all I can say, we rented Bowling for Columbine, and it cusked donkey balls, more than Biggie and Tupac: The Documentary Movie did, and I liked Tupac, man Id rather read this old fat boring man's books than watch that again.

There aint even any bowling in it, it's all about guns and how a bank gives u a free dun when u take out an account with them, no wonder the bank was in a southern state for fuck sake

Im not even from america and I found this movie sucked a fat highland man's left testicle, while he has his bagpipes rammed up his arse.

Kingpin was a better movie than this piece of Garbage, and I say that cos Kingpin actually had bowling in it.
So in the famous words of the Landlady from Kingpin....

My Blockbuster as Triumph of the Will and I watched it just out of curiosity. Anyway, when exactly did BFC come out because I want to see if they have it. I don't really have a problem with Blockbuster since the problem seems to be with Hollywood even though I go there sometimes when I'm in the mood for a cult/horror movie (great selection).

I don't like Michael Moore at all but I am curious about the movie.

Nah... They have a much better selection of semi-obscure titles, and horror/sci-fi films then Blockbuster does, and there aren't any mom and pops in my area that I know of.

There probably are some actually, since I live in a huge population center, but in my exploration of the area I haven't seen any in driving distance. :(

I'd really like to find one, since mom and pops are usually literally half as much as Hollywood/Blockbuster.

Join your local public library. I dunno about where you live but the dundee central library has a good selection and it's only 60p a night for films there. (So I would assume it's like that in all the major cities in the uk.)

I work for hollywood and last I heard, we're still getting it. When the original release date was released, it was added to our list of up coming new releases, so back then we were apparently supposed to get it. Then they pushed the date back and it came off of the new release list. But now its on our list again for august, so we *should* be getting it. Though, the list I'm talking about is store dependent, so other stores may not carry it. But that's probably only based on demographics, not censorship.

Most likely, the store the original topic was about is privately owned and is not a corporate store. Its most likely a franchise store. Franchise stores can really can decide whatever they want to be in their stores. I work at a hollywood corporate store and we will be recieving Bowling For Columbine when it is released.
