About Schmidt was a film that I missed last year when it was released and I am thankful that I rented it. Jack is at his best he gives a great performance as well as the rest of the crew. The story is very good and very touching. I laughed and even got teary eyed. I loved just sitting back and watching the story unfold. Some say its to slow. I think not. The story was told at a perfect pace. Some say they could have done without Kathy Bates being nude. This I will agree with. Some said they walked out after seeing this. That is something I would not recommend. Let her have her half of second of fame as any woman would want, you don't have to like it. Let me stop rambling on about that. Go rent About Schmidt which is about a man. You'll be glad you did. One of the better films last year. Easily.

9/10

I am also glad I rented it.I missed it in theatres as well.Kathy Bates' nude scene made me laugh to death.Jack Nicholson's ass was in surprisingly good shape in his nude scene. The movie was often very funny and touching. It wasent how I imagined it but it was even better.I give it a 9/10.I took off a point for getting a little bored in it's pace.

I liked About Schmidt a lot more then I expected too. I thought it look rather boring but I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did. It's a great character study and features some fantastic acting. Jack Nicholson gives one of his best performances ranking up there with One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and As Good As It Gets. Kathy Bates is also great as usual as the sexually charged Roberta. I thought she was hilarious and her lines were great ("I had my first orgasm at age six in ballet class"). Dermot Mulroney let his mullet do all the acting. Hope Davis was also good as Schmidt’s tightly wound daughter.

The screenplay was fantastic. It was full of funny dialogue and fun characters. I loved the trailer couple played by Harry Groener and Connie Ray. The stoned brother and Roberta’s ex-husband were also funny. Alexander Payne did a great job with the script and an “pretty good” job behind the camera. The pace was good but I feel the directing could have used a bit of spark and I found the ending a bit unsatisfying. Those are just minor quibbles though and they shouldn’t stop you from seeing this moving character study. I give it a solid 8/10.

Roberta Hertzel: Larry, we've been welcomed by you, thank you so much, now would you please just drink your fucking milk and shut the fuck up.

A great movie, panders a bit at times, but is overall great. I took of an extra point for Kathy Bates nudity- sorry, that was terrifying.

8/10

Bates and Jack do good as usual and the film has a great script and great style to it.

I watched this movie again and I've decided to lower my grade. The film has hardly any re-watch value and I found it much slower this time around. I was actually planning on buying it but I'm glad I didn't since it would probably never get watched again. My grade now is a still strong 7/10.

About Schmidt **1/2

I found this movie to be occasionally diverting but pretty pointless and definately way overrated. Jack is pretty damn good here playing a normal old guy. But his performance was really the only one I cared for. Hope Davis was ok, I guess. She didn't have much to do though. I didn't care for Dermot Mulroney's performance. Unfortunately, the same can be said of Kathy Bates. It's not a bad performance. Just nothing special. Her nude scene I'll admit was pretty funny. And there are cute moments riddled throughout the movie here and there. But despite a solid performance by Jack I didn't find his character to be very interesting either. There is no really no arch. His character doesn't change much. And the ending with Jack crying after reading the letter to me was just laughable. So as a whole I have to say I liked individual scenes but the movie just doesn't add up to anything. And the characters just aren't very interesting to me. In the end, all this movie has going for it is Jack's performance but, for me, as magnificant an actor as he is, that is just not enough. The movie left me feeling empty and dissatisfied.
