From IMDB
Miramax plans to bring the Oscar-winning musical Chicago back to theaters in July in a new version featuring an additional musical number that was cut from the original release, Daily Variety reported today (Thursday). The trade paper said that the release, which will probably screen in fewer than 600 theaters, is intended to promote the DVD version, set to hit retailers on Aug. 19, also featuring the additional scene.
The number they're talking abour is of course "Class" performed by Zeta-Jones and Latifah.
Now, I saw it 3 times and would gladly pay to see it again, especially since Zeta was the best thing about the movie, but it will never play here, so I'll just have to get it on DVD.

Hilarious!
Class is an amazing song (especially this part, '...there ain't no gentlemen to open up the doors, there ain't no just ladies now there's only pigs and whores ... nobody's got no class...'). And I'm sure this misical number is great too, still don't know why they deleted it - did they know they'll win an Oscar and after that everyone will see the full version (gladly) one more time?
Btw, I saw three times too :D

Apparently, it had nothing to do with the quality of the number itself, the audience at test screenings just thought it slowed down the movie.
P.S Listening to Zeta belt out "All That Jazz" right now. Or in fact every day for the past 5 months or so.

Sounds like a pretty cheap marketing gimmick, but I'll see it anyway.

The song "Class" is a great song, and easily one of the best on the soundtrack (I Move On is my favorite though). I would've easily traded in all of Richard Gere's crappy music numbers just so this one could've been put in the movie

I heard that reason it was cut was because it didn't fit into the whole concept of the musical all being in Roxie's mind, since she wasn't there for that scene. Too bad it got cut, it's a great song and I'm sure Ms. Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah were hilarious in it. I'm sooooo glad it's on the DVD.

Musicals suck. Except for Newsies. I haven't seen that movie in years, but I recall that I liked that movie.

But it could've been written into that concept easily, don't you think? After all in numbers like "Cell Block Tango", "When You're Good to Mama" or "I Can't Do It Alone"(my favorite) Roxie doesn't really do anything, she's just there watching them. The same could've been done here.
Oh and I'm tired of defending musicals from close-minded people who discard the whole genre. If they don't wanna watch them - it's their loss.

...ever the fucking sell-outs... well I'm sure they'll line their pockets more, maybe someday soon Weinstein will have enough to buy himself a Jean Hersholt award and all of our souls...

Class is a fun song, but this move is just like Miramax. Always milking the cash cow.

Milking the cash cow? More like milking the awards. The Weinsteins and their cronies might produce decent film, but they are award whores, and I doubt even half the films that Miramax wins big awards for will be remembered in 20 years.

Half the films that win awards won't be remebered in 20 years time, Miramax or no Miramax. But I doubt Chicago will be one of them - it will be remembered as the first musical to win BP after 34 years.

Well, I definitely agree. Wish the producers of the film did too. :(

It's funny that the song is called "class," because by putting this movie out there again, Miramax is obviously showing that they don't have any. Why not just add it to the DVD? Money-grubbing SOBs...

Not personal, Miramax just really pisses me off these days. They used to be the biggest indepdendent distributor, which made them the best studio, but Holden McNeil was right, ever since they made She's All That things have gone to hell. Now Harvey buys Oscars, fucks with Scorsese's vision, and is an all around media/award/money whore. Shame to see it fall is all, and I don't like obvious attempts to continue to cash in and get some dual promotion in, sure it's good business, but it further cheapens the art I most love.

But they are adding it to the DVD. So those who don't want to pay for another cimema ticket don't have to. And those who do wanna see it in theaters once again will get a chance to do so. Don't see what's wrong with that.

I think it's a shame seeing so many people just flat out saying "musicals suck". It sucks to disregard an entire genre like that so unfairly. I mean, you guys are supposed to be movie fans here.

Well I could open up and write detailed reviews for Bye Bye Birdie, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Singin in the Rain, My Fair Lady, and West Side Story FILMS but the main point is that they were all terrible. I just dont care for these when done in film form. I feel the musicals are best done on stage where you can absorb a musical atmosphere. That being said I enjoy a good musical score in a movie but not a whole musical. I do like animated musicals like Fantasia though.
