What I assumed was that General Thade somehow got sent back to Earth and took over and became a great leader.

Original ending: genius.
Remake ending: not genius.

Exactly!
I'm a Burton fan, but the remake (and ending) don't even compare.

(Before I start...it might help if you put a SPOILER warning in your header next time...not everyone's seen either version of POTA yet...)
Carrying on...oh, hang on a mo...

My brother pointed this out to me; as Mark Wahlberg is saying good-bye to everyone, the treacherous Orangutan steals a small but important piece of equipment out of the pod that the chimp Wahlberg came looking for arrived in. Marky uses the pod to get back to Earth in his own time, only to find it's been re-populated by intelligent apes, and Thade is one of their heroes.
My brother concluded that the Orang gave/sold this piece of technology to Thade, who used it to create his own wormhole-travelling pod, went back into our past and liberated/educated/evolved our simians. Thus, if Wahlberg had never gone after his favourite chimp, his final fate wouldn't have happened.
I prefer the ending of the original, personally. At least you know what happened to the Earth in that one.

There was some seriously hokey moments (IMHO), and it was a bit gimicky... i.e., the little girl ape wearing a damn pink dress and a bow! What was up with that? Also, I gree with Fr, and that the original was far, far superior to the remake, and I hated the ending... Perhaps had it been better explained, it would have been er, acceptable, but in Burton's hands, it blew a chunk.
