"DeepStar Six" 1989
2/10
Directed by: Sean S. Cunningham ("Friday the 13th")
Written by: Lewis Abernathy and Geof Miller ("Lovers Lane")
Starring: Nancy Everhard, Greg Evigan, Matt McCoy, and Miguel Ferrer
Plot: Deep sea military installation is charged with setting up nuclear missle launch platforms. During construction they disturb a mysterious and deadly creature and death and destruction ensue...
Review: Crap film made to try and hitch a ride off "The Abyss" fanfare. Poor storyline, poor special effects, and generally just a boring mess.
Boring is the best description for this film. Usually I laud films that hide their monsters/villians until the end. This film, however, simply spends about 80 minutes showing vehicles crashing or being mysteriously hit while people crouch over some awful sonar screen. The story goes nowhere other than offing a couple characters. A lame ass romance angle tries to carry the film but it is about as boring as ship A crashing.
The acting is subpar except for Miguel Ferrer who pulls off a terrific performance as the shipmate that cracks up. He also gets a nasty little welcome to the surface.
The special effects--- the monster looked like a nightmare cross of something out of the 50's with some overzealous CGI and a bad puppeteer. I think they wanted me to be afraid and I was offering up girlish giggles.
Do yourself a favor- skip "DeepStar Six" and take a gander at "The Abyss."
