View Full Version : "Best movie" threads where people give 500 movie lists...

I'm kind of tired of this little trend. Someone will say, oh, for example...
"What is the single best romantic comedy ever?"
Then people will give lists, sometimes literally over 10 movies long. Yeah, I know those 10 are among the best. So what? Pick one, maybe two, please. It REALLY defeats the purpouse of that type of consensus.
There's my minor rant for the moment.

I agree 100%.
I KNOW it's hard to pick one, but if that's what the thread asks then we should follow it, maybe give one runner-up, that's it. If it's not asking for your top five or ten, then don't give it.
I hope people will start doing this.

to be honest, i have taken to avoiding the best/worst/faves forum for this exact reason.
nice rant. concise, but effective ;)
Yeah. That's fuckin' annoying.

I agree 100%, even though I've probably done this before. I also hate how the same topics are always recycled and posted again, but this is also another thing on that board that irks me

I know, right? No more new Fight Club or Mulholland Dr. threads, please. Just bump up an old one, thanks.

There are like 8945915616516654984 threads about Mulholland Drive. And I also hate when they post a new one about Donnie Darko.

There are actually 978 threads on it, according to the search engine.

I agree with most everything said on this topic so far. Id also like to add that one of the things that pisses me off the most is when people rate nearly every movie that is halfway decent a 10 out of 10, and proclaim that it is the best movie ever..... ...until a month later when a NEW movie comes along that is halfway decent to take its place.

There are a lot of people that seem to be able to only give one of 4 rankins. A 1, a 2, a 9 or a 10... Yeesh.

I can't stand when people do not stay within the confines of their own rating scale. Some people say they have a scale that ranges from 0-10 but then they see a supposedly great movie and grade it as a "10+" or "11..12..13/10" so on and so forth. What's the point of have a scale if your just going to go outside the boundaries of that scale. Set limits, dammit! :)
Oh, and everything else that's been mentioned bugs me also...

That burns me up as well and goes back to what i was saying. They rate any halfway decent movie a 10 or a 9 and then when something truly great comes along its 100000 out of 10!
Its like what Jim H said, if they dislike the movie they give it a 2 if the movie is decent it gets a 10 automaticly.

I don't know if this is pertinent to the topic or not, but it aggravates me when perfect ratings are just thrown around. For me, a film has to earn a perfect rating. What if this 10 is considerably better than that 10? That's what 1-9 are for!

I don't mind when people list a bunch of movies instead of just one. Then again, I've probably been guilty of this myself. :D

if people list 10 or 20 movies, a lot of the same movies tend to get listed, and the thread tends to get boring. if people just named one or two movies, then it would be more interesting to look over.....

I'm kind of the contrary. When someone says "list your favorite (whatever) kind of movies" or whatever and somebody lists one, I usually think "Well...that's a fucking boring list" and then move on. I like the long ones better.
The only time this bugs me though is when the thread specifically asks for ONLY ONE and then someone lists ten or more. I remember one time it was asked one-per-customer, and everyone did, then one Schmoe who's been here for a while listed like twenty, with ten runner-ups. I think he was just showing off, and that was kind of annoying.
I also dislike the big lists when there is no particular order. Then there's no point.

I agree with you ColinM. I was mostly talking about where they're like "What is your favorite dramatic movie?". That's asking for one. If they said "What are your favorite action movies?" it is different. If they have an ORDER, that is different as well - the #1 is their favorite, but they're implying the others are worth for your consideration as well. It's like a little extra touch. Just really long ones get stupid.

Well, that being the case, I'm with you. If the person goes out of their way to ask for only one answer, it is quite irritating when people list off a few dozen.
