I am not a big fan of commercials before movies. fair enough, it keeps the ticket prices low and everything, but i do feel its a waste of time.

if that wasnt enough, we are now getting to see adverts for religious groups before movies. its happened maybe the last 3-4 times i have been to the cinema, there have been adverts for christian groups before the movie.

now, freedom of speech is fine, and everyone is entitled to their beliefs. what annoys me is the timing of it. the showing of a movie feels totally inappropriate. its just not the right time to be advertising a religion. movie time is my time, its the time i want to get into another world. what i dont need is to have religion shoved down my throat in the form of an "insure your soul" style advert. there is a time and a place for everything and my point here is that a cinema is the wrong place to be screening what basically amounts to religious propoganda. while people can have their beliefs and express them, it seems unfair to enforce them on a theatre full of people who do not share those beliefs....

Ahhh, the old "captive audience" thing. Even if it weren't religious in nature, it would piss me off. But the fact that they have you at their whim really would irk me.

If it happened here, I would seriously consider talking to the management.

"If you watch this movie, Jesus cries."

Thankfully I haven't had anything like this happen to me yet. Im not exactly the biggest fan of religion, or 'God', and I would be a little peeved if I had paid 6-10 bucks to see a movie and be blasted with "Be a good little boy, go to church, say your prayers, eat your vitamins" before the movie starts. It's bad enough that I gotta see fucking pop and car commercials before the previews start.

Many of you know my take on faith, God, etc from that other thread. I'm a Christian, believe in God, etc. But there should be NO Commercials at the theater of any kind!!!!!!!!! These included.

Although, it could be kinda funny at the END of a movie. Something along the lines of:

"You just saw a serial killer go crazy ape-shit wild with a chainsaw and hack people to bits, if that happened to you tonight, do you know where your soul would go?" :D

Well I kinda would rather see a commercial for religion before I see a movie then have them all born again people come to my house every mourning and try to give me some book to read then....If I take the book just to be nice they come back and ask for it back....And i'am like I thought you gave it to me.....That really pisses me off

But joking aside...there should be no religious messages or infomercials before the previews start

Though I have only ben getting car commercials and every now and again I get that damn cover girl commercial

The theatre chain up from my house shows NO commercials other than Fandango and they are the LOWEST in ticket prices & matinee showings where Im at.
The commercials us US schomes either had to deal with (cars, computers, video games, miltary recruitment, TV show/mini series spots, newspaper subscriptions and charity organizations sponsered by the theatre) other than that no ads pertaining to religion. Like u have said, I know god is out there but id like to be not reminded during my movie watching enjoyment.

Here here! I'll drink to that.

I have never seen this but I think it's inappropriate. The thing that gets to me is when they show a cancer commercial (here in Massachusetts it's the Jimmy Fund) and then come in and pass the bucket for contributions, causing you to have to put down your popcorn, soda etc and go thru your wallet in the dark. Plus the commercial is sad and puts a damper on your mood.

What the hell? I know that cancer is a deadly disease, and that many people a year die from it, hell my grandpa died from it, but there is a time and place for everything, and walking into a movie theater before the movie starts to take up a collection is not the time or place to do so. If that were to happen at a movie I paid to see, and the bucket came to me, I would literally throw the sumbitch across the theater and scream at the top of my lungs "I JUST WANNA WATCH THE FUCKING MOVIE!!!!!"

Dude
06-19-2003, 07:58 AM
Passing the bucket, etc, was sort of done in the family owned theaters when I was kid. We had one of those "Majestic" type theaters.

I agree, there is a time and place for everything. Movies are ESCAPISM...as in escaping from the REALITIES of miserable shit and disease which is in the world. I DONT want reality pooling over into my fantasy. Just like there is separation of church and state...we need to have separation of reality and escapism at the shows. Yeah, I KNOW I'm a spoiled "american" and third world countries dont have air conditioned theaters..let alone air conditioners..OR theaters for that matter....but dont fuckin' try to make me feel guilty when I am out for a GOOD TIME. I KNOW who needs help and where to donate if and when I want to...I dont need to be held captive to be reminded of this.

I would FREAK if I seen a religious ad..and I'm Christian as well. In an era where the forces that be are trying to stamp out GOD and Christianity, and shoot for a secular only world, I would guess such an ad is an annomally...and far from the norm.

thats all well and good, but do you believe that god now has a right to try and seduce new worshippers by forcing me to endure cheesy adverts before a movie?

They show religious adverts before movies in the U.S.? I suppose I'm not that shocked, but coming from a secular state, I'd just be completely surprised to see anything like that here.

I don't really mind commercials in the main before features though - it gives people time to sit down and can be an extra bit of insurance if you're running late.

I don't want to be held captive because someone else is "running late." If they can't be there on time, let them see the next showing.

Ban commercials.

Wouldn't know. Never seen one. I'm lucky to have one of those "Fandango" theaters.

Bah. Think about that stance the next time fifteen people slowly pass in front of you deciding where to sit during the opening scene of a film, instead of during a harmless Nissan commercial. :)

But where does it end? There are some people who are just late to everything. So if moviesw always start 10 minutes late because of commercials, everyone starts to know this and plans accordingly. "oh honey, i know it says 7:00, but we dont have to be there untill 7:09 because of the commercials."

NO Commercials!!!

Exactly. The thing to do is to restrict entrance after the advertised start time. My biggest pet peeve in the world is chronic tardiness. Good lord, people. Just fucking show up on time.

Dude

Yep! If (I) can show up BEFORE the movies starts, get my seat, snacks etc..BEFORE the movie starts, so can the rest of fucking humanity. If not, then BAN entrance into the theater at the START of the movie...and I'm being generous, cause thats the kind of guy I am. ;)

Oh, arrived 2 minutes AFTER the movie..too bad, wait for the second showing..5 minutes, 10 minutes late? Fuck off.

I would also take it a step further (good thing I dont run the world) and only let people get up during the flick to use the bathroom..though that annoys me as well...If I can hold it so can the ENTIRE THEATER for 2 hours. No fucking way would I allow some miscreant to come back during the flick and now try to get back into their seat with their dripping smelly fucking nachos, etc...get the shit before the movie starts or GO WITHOUT!!!!!!

I'm outta control.... :D

You'd think it would be that easy huh??

The commercials fucking annoy me... I was even shushed at a commercial at the beginning of Wrong Turn... I just about turned around and bitch slapped the irritating numb nuts... I'm sorry, did I just ruin what you've seen a millions times on television anyway? Daft lil' bugger...

Get rid of commercials!!!!

The one thing I'm glad about.. I realized AMC just replaced the last 10 minutes of stills and easy listening music with commercials. I'd rather have that then have the movie start 10 minutes later. Wehrenberg theatres, 90 minute movies take over 2 hours. Grumble.

I'm a pragmatist. Yes, people are going to be late, and no, the cinemas aren't going to close the doors with finality the second the session's due to start (it just doesn't make financial sense). Given that, the commercials serve a purpose. Don't really buy the slippery slope argument though - everybody I know plans to get there when the session is said to start; if you're already late, you might feel better that the commercials exist, but you don't really plan for the time they occupy, 'cause it's a little random (at least, it is here). But shit happens, buses don't come, keys get lost, there are traffic holdups, etc, etc.

If I wanna watch a film completely sans commercials and with no interruptions, I'll hire a DVD. The cinema's a public place, and with that comes... stuff.

(I can't quite bring myself to say "YES Commercials!!!", but I just don't have a huge problem with them.)
