I still can't believe we're living in a society where it's acceptable to make fun of someone because of their weight... In my personal opinion, I find it tacky to make fun of someone because of the way they look. Being fat or ugly is not a decent reason to dislike someone and tell them to fuck off, and it's not a decent reason to make an entire thread sharing your feelings with an entire board. And being fat is definitely not a reason to say hurtful and nasty things towards someone.

People are entitled to dislike anyone they want, but sometimes the reasons should be questioned. I find this thread tacky and tasteless to be honest. I hope I won't get in trouble for saying that, but it's how I feel. Must we revert to "suck me bitch!!!!" to share your dislike of someone? Isn't it easier to say, "these are some actresses that I don't like very much... what are your thoughts on them?"

Yeah, I'm on a high horse, so sue me. Making fun of someone because of their looks or their weight should not be acceptable anywhere..

Yeah, i'm with you on this dude...I love the boards and all, but some of the rants go a bit extreme in their disrespect of people they've never even talked to...granted, i might have done a bit of disrespecting myself (ahem, robert benigni :p) but for the most part, I try not to say stuff like so and so is a bitch, and they can go fuck themselves, etc...)

The assumptions made on the rant/celeb talk gossib forums are extreme, in some cases, based on one incident that may or may not have happened, people automatically say stuff like oh, she's a whore, or a bitch etc...(i'm thinking specifically of the thread that was talking about mariah carey...when the info turned out to be false, people used other also rumored incidents to justify more talk of her being a bitch...but in reality, we don't even know her, and half the stuff could easily be falsified...)

I love being a schmoe, but sometimes I just think some of us take things a bit too far...ranting on issues is good, but dumping on celebs we don't know is bad...if they're actually QUOTED on saying something, then you can have an opinion on that, but a lot of times, it's just articles speculating that have us all up and yelling about snobby celebs, or not EVEN that, just us dumping on celebs for no reason.

I mean, if i took what the boards said as true, i'd think that every single celeb in the world was bitchy, snobbish, etc...i don't think there's a single celeb that hasn't been torn apart here which disgusts me.

It's hard to implement rules to ban this type of thing, but I think we schmoes should take the initiative to not post things like that, or at the very, very, VERY least back it up with a reason (besides oh, she's fat, etc)

I'm in the semi-unique position of having met a good number of them, and all the stories of their attitudes are not created from nowhere. Many of them have some basis in fact.

The fact that they choose to make their living, and quite acomfortable living at that, off of the people entitles the people to have and state their opinions. Even if those opinions are unfounded. If they don't want publicity, both positive and negative, they can go sell insurance. Nobody's forcing them to live their life that way. If they feel some need to "express their art" they can go recite beat poetry in a coffee house in Reseda, and avoid all the negative attention. The fact is, a great many of them crave the spotlight, and choose a career that will keep them in it.

Which entitles people to state their opinions.

I have no sympathy for them.

Not that this may say much, but, Reese Witherspoon went to Stanford and in every interview I have seen/read with her, she has come off as polite, intelligent, funny and (in my opinion) she is a quite talented actress. First up, the moderators know EXACTLY what is acceptable and what isn't...so I'm not sure where you're going with that.

Second of all, I actually KNOW for a fact that certain stars/directors do visit our forums and read our stuff, so does that mean that I should ask everyone to withhold their personal opinions of them solely because they "might" be around??? And where do we stop? Do we stop giving our actual opinions on their movie as well, because we might "hurt their feelings"? ("This movie sucked, but I feel bad for the director, so....") Furthermore, my impression is that most "celebs" would actually WANT TO KNOW what others say about them "in private" (in fact, some of them check out these discussion forums for that very reason!!). I see my name come up on other movie boards sometimes and I actually VALUE some of the things that people say about me. If Ed Norton spit in a guy's face in the airport because he asked for his autograph, maybe it's a good thing that someone bring it up here... ;) (that never happened, btw...just a point)

The last time I checked, the schmoes weren't in the public arena. The last time I checked, none of them were making millions of dollars for "acting" or posing in magazines or walking down red carpets at premieres. My point? My point is that the ONE DOWN SIDE (and I stress....ONE!) to being a celebrity is that you have to give up some of your "private" life and have people judge you according to this or that. Is it right? Probably not, but if I had a choice of becoming a major motion picture star with the downside being that strangers on the Internet would bitch about me....uuuuhm, something tells me that I would actually choose the former... :) Me thinks you might be taking this a little too seriously.

Do I partake in it myself? Sometimes...but mostly, I find better uses with my time. Do I find that some people take it too far in the CELEB GOSSIP forum at times? Our forums were created for movie fans around the world to enjoy conversations with one another and if dissing a celeb every now and again "does it" for some peeps, that's fine by me (the last time I checked, that's what 90% of talk shows are based on). As long as everyone keep things "light" and doesn't JUST go around telling everyone and their uncle in the movie industry to go FUCK THEMSELVES, I think it's all in good fun and that's what you, and others who agree with you on this point, should try to take it as.

If you don't, that's your right too, but seeing as this is a privately operated board and those are our basic rules, you can always choose to leave as well... ;)

The last time I checked, the schmoes weren't in the public arena. The last time I checked, none of them were making millions of dollars for "acting" or posing in magazines or walking down red carpets at premieres. My point? My point is that the ONE DOWN SIDE (and I stress....ONE!) to being a celebrity is that you have to give up some of your "private" life and have people judge you according to this or that. Is it right? Probably not, but if I had a choice of becoming a major motion picture star with the downside being that strangers on the Internet would bitch about me....uuuuhm, something tells me that I would actually choose the former... :) Me thinks you might be taking this a little too seriously.

Do I partake in it myself? Sometimes...but mostly, I find better uses with my time. Do I find that some people take it too far in the CELEB GOSSIP forum at times? I think Dude has a point. If it is about respect here at Joblo, than it should be about respect for everyone. But if schmoes are allowed post whatever they want about celebrities, even if the post is disrespectful and has "no weight behind it", than why not allow a little bantering amoung the schmoes themselves? BUT, and this is where I disagree with Dude, the rules are not enforced strictly, thank God. Dude, i don't think people are getting banned for the things you mentioned. I've seen some pretty strong posts and usually the moderator gives a gentle reminder about the rules and closes the thread. I love that there are guidelines and moderators who care about them. That's what makes this place rock. I think it comes down to common sense, which JoBlo and the Mods (sounds like a funky 70's cover band) seem to have in abundance. I think you are reacting to the letter of the law and not the spirit of the law.

I also agree that if people are whining about the things you mentioned, than they are ruddy wankers and should bugger off. I've had too much fecking coffee and I have to go for a slash, then I think i'll sod off. Dude, since when is your "opinion" the "truth"?? Everything that you've said so far is your "opinion"...not the truth. It's what you believe to be right and that's cool by me.

Unfortunately, we have a business to run here with thousands of choices and people to look over every day, so in this case, my opinion is actually "policy". I say "if you don't like it, leave" because, well...if you don't like it...you can leave. Nobody is forcing you to stay here and be upset or angry. If I don't like a show on my TV tube, I will generally change the channel...I won't sit down and write a letter to the makers of "Will & Grace" and ask them to change their writing staff or the show's direction, because it's THEIR SHOW....my "opinion" is just that...my "opinion".

This isn't a democracy in which I ask everyone for their opinion on every little decision I make every day and act accordingly. The last time I checked, I was paying the bills around here. The last time I checked, I've been working on this site 24/7/365 since 1998 and doing a pretty successful job so far, I might add.

You believe that we are being "hypocritical" with this policy....fair enough, you had the right to that opinion. But once more, I must ask you re-read my previous post and note our "official stance" on the issue. That's the bottom line. The story ends there and this thread is now closed because it is no longer a MOVIE DISCUSSION.

Here's my analogy of this whole thing (I love analogies...): You are essentially walking into my house for free, enjoying the view, the drinks, the peeps and complaining about the color of the walls. We are TRYING OUR BEST here, dude and one would have thought that after 850 posts, you might appreciate our hard work enough to, at the very least, RESPECT my point of view, my decision on this issue and our policies and just "agree to disagree" and leave it at that, but for some reason, you've decided that chastizing me in front of everyone is the better way to go.
