I really gotta get this off my chest. I got a friend who refuses to see movies like T3 nad The Hulk due to the fact that he thinks people will only go see them because they are mass marketed. I hate when people do this! Just because a movie is highly promoted they hope it does bad or will suck. People blame blockbusters for alot of the mindless drivel in Hollywood and they are partly correct but most of the time they turn out pretty well, and provide some of the years best entertainment! DareDevil,X2,The Hulk, and The Matrix are soem of the best movies ive seen this year and im betting T3 will be up there as well.
Think of it this way, some of your favorite small movies may have NEVER existed if the studios had not made so much money off a blockbuster. They might not have had that money to take that risk with.
Like i said, just had to get that off my chest. Seems like more people complain about big hype movies but then on opening day they are the same people ahead of me in line to see them.

I don't hate Blockbuster for those reasons actually...and i don't "hate" blockbuster. But I'm not a big fan of it, MAINLY because the blockbusters around here, everytime i go in, you look at the dvd stack and it goes something like this: 5 stacks of pan & scan spider-man, 1 stack of widescreen spider-man
they are very against widescreen, and i'm a huge widescreen advocate so i don't go to blockbuster. I go to Rogers, where they store up an equal amount.
Besides, that I have nothing against Blockbuster (hey, i get some stuff cheap there sometimes since my friend works there)

omg, i'm sooooooo sad, i'm WAYYYYYY too tired lol :p...
k you can all laugh now :p
anyway, no i don't hate blockbusters then...hell, i probably contribute to the overflow of money towards blockbusters, most of the time what i see in theatres are considered blockbusters...i usually see the smaller films on video or dvd (while i love the smaller films, usually the bigger budgeted blockbusters are the type that you should watch in theatres...it's all about the special effects, etc which look the best on a big screen while small films don't really need to be watched on the big screen)
though i am getting a bit sick of all the sequels to blockbusters...

A lot of summer blockbusters are incredibly stupid films. I can see why people dumb on them. Most of them are extremely entertaining though, especially at a big theatre with a sold out crowd.
So I agree, until you see them and hate them, don't diss em.
Unless it's From Justin to Kelly.

I don't believe in the philosophy that big-budget films will suck. Yes, a lot of blockbuster hits are mindless drivel, but The Matrix kicks serious ass, as do some others. T3 better kick ass, or I'm gonna have to kick someone's ass. Anyway, my point is, movies can be good or bad no matter what the budget or popularity. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go kick some ass....

Am I the only one here who is just a lover of movies? People get so wrapped up in trying to be film snobs and holier than thou that they can't take the time to just sit down and watch a goddamn movie and enjoy themselves.
I'm glad I don't live in a lot of film snobs' worlds.....I'm glad I can be just as entertained by a "mindless" explosions and shootouts type movie as I am by more intellectual fare. I'm glad my world is full of cheesy comedies, horror movies, no budget independent movies, big budget "blockbusters" and some artsy fartsy stuff here and there.
Don't try to give me a Shwarzenegger(sp?) flick and paradae it around as a thinking man's movie...by the same token, don't give me some artsy fartsy Harmony Korine movie and make me believe it's going to have mass appeal and contain witty one-liners and explosions. Worst of all, don't be boring! Challenge me, fascinate me, thrill me, goddamn, just fucking entertain me!
Sorry, got off on my own little rant there ;-))

In fact, just dumping at all can be a really big relief.

Mm - Yes. Surely wiser words have never been spoken.

I do indeed like some big summer blockbusters, and have been looking forward to a relatively large portion of this summer's blockbusters. There are quite a few blockbusters that I have no desire or intention of seeing, such as Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, and Legally Blonde 2.

The concept of the Blockbuster almost seems to be a genre in and of itself. Personally, I love em. Some of them are my favorite films. But there's just as many that are complete crap. And there are even some which earn themselves the label of mediocrity. I prefer to utilize discretionary dumping when critiquing a film.
Example of GOOD blockbuster: Jurassic Park
Example of BAD blockbuster: Bulletproof Monk
DareDevil

Most blockbusters are crap. I love good blockbusters, but unfortunately, they're kinda rare. Shit like 2FAST2FURIOUS, FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY or DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR? deserves being dumped on.

Is Justin versus Kelly really deserving of the title "Summer Blockbuster" though?

I always think of it in matches. For every Jurassic Park, a movie that defines quality blockbuster and revolutionized special effects, there's a Mummy Returns, which recycles it. For every X2, which proves how a comic book superhero movie should be done, there's a Daredevil, which sticks it's fist up the genre's ass and feels around. So for the amount of good blockbusters there are, we naturally just focus on the negative side of things, even if we line up, see all the mindless drivel knowingly like lemmings, and complain
