Come on, am I the only person in the world who was underwhelmed by the very first Star Wars movie? Next to Phantom Menace this is my least favorite of all the Star Wars flicks.
Boring, slow, bland acting and dialogue, and lame, unnexciting action scenes.
5/10
Empire Strikes Back was a major improvement.
So, who here agrees with me?

5/10 is what I gave it when I finally got around to seeing it in '97. I honestly don't see the big deal with these movies. They're so corny.

Oooh, finally! Ok...I'm gonna get it out...
My name is Annie Hall and I didn't think A New Hope was all that great.
as a matter of fact, I think all the Star Wars movies; with the possible exception of Empire Strikes Back have a criminal amount of hoopla surrounding them.
I understand when it came out it was new and innovative, but, as a piece of work in itself it is...lackluster.

I thought A New Hope was so-so (6/10)
Empire Strikes Back was way better though (8/10)

I couldn't have said it any better, Annie. I gave A New Hope a 6/10 rating! I thought Empire was the best and that got an 8/10. I think the franchise has aged terribly. Too damn cheesy!

Out of the original trilogy, many people think Return of the Jedi is the worst. Ironically, it's my favorite Star Wars movie out of all them. Go figure.
A New Hope 5/10
Empire Strikes Back 8/10
Return of the Jedi 9/10
Phantom Menace 4/10
Attack of the Clones 7/10

I don't hate Star Wars but I definitely don't love it. Like Annie Hall said, it was revolutionary and groundbreaking in its day, but really, it's aging pretty badly. My general mark for the entire first trilogy is around 7, leaning a bit towards 8.
And of course, the new movies Phantom Menace (0/10) and Attack of the Clones (6/10) aren't really helping...

The sequels were better, but I'm generally not a fan of the series. I give A New Hope a 5 or 6/10 (I might give it another try some time)

An overrated saga IMO

A New Hope is in my top 20, and in my opinion the strongest of the Star Wars series. A New Hope intriduced the characters and stuff. A great movie.

I think 5'10 is a tad harsh however I do think New Hope is slightly over touted I would mark it up as a 7/10 I really can't see how there is a problem with the pacing.
It's slow to start off with because it is investing the time into story don't forget there are two other films following this so and the action is with them.

Attack of the Clones-0.5/10
A New Hope-10.5

Once you guys make a The New Trilogy Sucks club, then I'll join!
But for now, I'll just disagree.

Star Wars is glorified "B" moviemaking!

It's exactly as much a B-movie as the Indiana Jones films. Both are loving homages to the old time serials and shorts, with A movie budgets.

You guys must be young. A New Hope was fucking fantastic. You've just come to expect too much with all the newfangled CGI stuff. The only BAD acting in the first was done by Mark Hamill. But the story was indeed an homage to the old serials, and what it accomplished FOR ITS TIME was remarkable.

7/10's are either B-'s or C's to me, in this case the old Star Wars movies gets the 'C' grade from me and that is a shitty grade IMO. And anything 7 or below are all AWFUL movies.....

That is the weirdest rating system I ever stumbled into. 7 out of 10=70% good, pretty much. That is hardly awful.

Well, different folks have different rating systems. I will stll stick with the fact that a low 7/10 is NOT a good grade but that's just MY rating system (weird, I know)....;)

Bingo. Keyword: "FOR ITS TIME".
A truly great movie should stand the test of time. Jurassic Park, The Alien flicks, Terminator 1 and 2, Indiana Jones trilogy, while they may not have effects up to today's standards, all are just as enjoyable to watch today as when they first came out. A New Hope is just laughingly bad today.

Disagreed. While the effects might lack in today's market, the story stands the test of time. It had cool characters, exciting action and witty dialogue.

I've had this discussion before. I've seen people who think "7/10 is good, 6/10 is shit". I mean, WTF? I think that having 7/10 is a flawed system, as it gives you less variance - you'll end up with a lot of 8, 9 and 10s, which doesn't do that good of a job of showing what you thought was REALLY good.
BTW, I actually think the special effects in Star Wars still stand up fantastically. When I rewatched the original (non-special edition on LD), the only thing I thought was particularly flawed was the never ending laser fights which just weren't that interesting. There wer a couple other minor pacing problems, but on the whole I really enjoyed it as I always do.
Here are my ratings..
Phantom Menace - 7/10
Attack of the Clones - 7/10 (this one seems to get worse on every viewing, and I've only seen Phantom Menace once)
Star Wars - 9/10
Empire Strikes Back - 10/10
Return of the Jedi - 9/10 (it used to be an 8, but I rewatched it recently and I think this one ends the best and the emperor is great.. "So be it.... Jedi.". Hehe).

I totally fuckin' agree with you, Jim. As usual. :D Even about the special effects in Star Wars.
I thought that on a scale of 1-10, a 5 would be average. Makes sense doesn't it?! Slanting a scale to make anything below 7 "bad" is sort of illogical.

Yeah, we should team up and beat the other Schmoes into submission. :D
I've always scored like most critics do with a 4 or 5 star system. 3 stars (equal to 7 or possibly 8) is good or very good, 3.5 is very good to great (8 or 9), 4 stars (equal to a 9 or 10, usually 10) is excellent, etc. 2 stars of course is a 5/10, and I've always equated 2 stars as mediocre. The problem with mediocre movies is they're often boring. I'm rarely bored by a truely awful movie, as sooner or later I start laughing at. Often times, for entertainment, "bad" movies are better then shear mediocrity.
But we're getting a bit off-topic here.
Warwick Davis = Best. Ewok. Ever.
He also = BEST. MIDGET. EVER.
That guy has like the best career ever. A furry anthromorphic teddy bear warrior. A murderous leprachaun. And a sorceror midget. Wow.

Yarbles...big hairy yarbles.
I have nephew's of 6, 9 and 12 and they ADORE the Star Wars flicks.
They're COOL kids as well (I'm not talking a little troupe of geeky nancy boy's)...the 6 year old is a big-time Jaws fan...the 9 year old's favourite film is Life Of Brian, and the 11 year old seems to have stolen my SE Wicker Man.
Perhaps...YOU dislike 'em...but believe me, they are STILL inspiring a whole new generation of youngster's.

It's cool to say you don't like Star Wars - and it may also be true, in some cases. But the movie is a terrific peice of entertainment and imagination and one of the few I own that does exactly what it says on the tin.

I saw Star Wars when I was 6. I'll never forget it. It shaped my entire childhood. I joined the fan club, had all the action figures, my friends and I would play Star Wars, we would make x-wings out of old boxes, I counted the months, weeks, days, minutes, until Empire came out, etc.
So i guess i'm a little biased. I think it's impossible for me to separate the nostalgia from how I feel about this/these movies.
Star Wars is like magic. It stands the test of time because it's a good story. Like BCV said, kids today still love it. Obviously the sfx are dated, and some of the dialogue is campy, but that is part of its charm. There are some amazing classics that show two people driving and it is so obvious that the car is on a stage and they are showing footage behind them, but that doesn't make a great movie any less great.
I don't know what I'd think if I saw Star Wars for the first time tonight. I probably would not like it as much. No movie will ever have the opportunity to be what Star Wars was/is to me. A magical, transforming, childhood memory that I hold so fondly.
I was dissapointed by Phantom Menace, but how could I not be? I stood in line for what seemed like days hoping to capture that same feeling. I wanted to transcend again, to be transported to a fantastic world with cool heros, evil villains, and amazing fight scenes. The thing is, I wanted to experience this as a child again. And sadly, that is impossible. For I'm older now, more cynical, more critical, unable to suspend disbelief like I did when I was six. So now I say, "that's cheesy dialogue, why did they pick him for that role, so and so would be better, Lucas should let someone else direct", etc. I am tainted.
I was not thinking such thoughts the first 30 or so times I saw Star Wars, i was merely enjoying what for me, in my 32 years, is the best movie experience I have had.

Can someone clarify which of the effects are unconvincing? Aside from a few somwhat weak puppet aliens, I think they're all excellent in the original trilogy, and are better then most big budget films that come out today.

The special effects didn't stand the test of time? Think about this, is there ever a single moment in any of the space battles in the entire Original Trilogy when it doesn't look real? NO. The X-Wings, the TIE Fighters, the Death Star, the Star Destroyers...there is never a single moment when it looks fake. It always seems so unbelievably real, and I challenge you to find me a single space-battle scene in which it looks ackward or fake. Same with the walkers, the lightsabers, etc. I'm not sure how anybody could say that the special effects haven't standed the test of time or are "laughably bad" when everything seems so real in a movie made decades ago while in movies today, when we have much better technology, special effects rarely look or feel real at all.

Big time ditto here. Few movies can create not just a magical world, but a whole damn universe, like A New Hope did, let alone some of most memorable characters in cinema and such awesome, fun, classic scenes.
