This is a small rant, but I just went to see Hollywood Homicide today, and while I was waiting for about 10 mins before the bullshit commercials and previews, I see two old ladys come in holding big novel-sized hardback books... So Im thinkin "what the fuck are they bringing those for?" of course they sit near the side wall under a light, and begin reading their fuckin books!
I dont understand, even if it is just to pass the time, you dont go to a gaddam movie, to read a fuckin book! Im really not even all that pist off about it, but its just the concept that they just plopped right down, and started reading like it was a fuckin library or something.... I swear the balls of some people... Heh altho I dont have a whole lotta room to talk since one time me and my date brought Taco Bell into the theatre (hid the tacos and shit in her purse!) heh it was great...
But have any of you ever seen this, where people will bring fuckin books with them to read, while waiting for the lights to go dark??

Uh, I usually bring a book if I'm seeing a movie by myself (like for Hulk Thursday night). What else is there to do, stare at the screen and be forced to watch corporate ads? Yeah, god forbid people use the down time wisely...

well you do whatcha need to do, but hell in my opinion a movie theatre aint no fuckin libraray... ah well, i see why you would bring a book, but i dont know, when i go to a movie thats ALL i wanna be doin... but hey, i understand why people would bring books, and i dont wanna argue... if this is just a stupid bullshit rant (which it mainly is) then either dont reply, or moderators delete.... just thought id bring the subject of reading in theatre up, in a somewhat controversial way! ;)
Why not get a portable DVD player and stick on "Jackie Brown" (or any film you like, I guess) at the local library in protest. That'll learn 'em.

So the only place to read a book is in a library?

If you're pissed that someone reads during a movie, then there's some substance behind the rant. But if you're seeing the movie by yourself, and want to at least enjoy some time before it starts, why not read? It's not like the people are jumping on the seats, bothering you, throwing popcorn, etc. I really don't see what the problem is
The theaters have those movie magazines for you. I usually take one, so I can sort of read to pass the time. What's wrong with that?

If they want to pass the time that way, let them. Instead they could talk loud and bother you. Which would you prefer?

People don't like to be bored whilst waiting for a film to start so why should it matter if they read before it starts?

If I had a book to read at the moment, I probably would take it to pass the time at the theatres.

Try 'Twelve'. I just finished it and liked it very much. The Catcher In The Rye for the Columbine generation.

Eh, there is nothing wrong with people reading before the movie starts... You all win! hehe... I just figured I'd bring it up as a topic of conversation, you're right, I'd rather have em read then bother the hell outta me! Guess this thread was all for naught... Oh well, I tried! :)

If more people read than went to the movies to see xXx or 2F2F, the world would be a much better place.

I actually listen to my CD Walkman to pass the time. If around 10 minutes or more to wait for the movie/trailers/commercials to start, I just let the music roll.

Oh, and such movies as "xXx" and "2 Fast 2 Furious" are not worth ranting about. They are fun movies that have nothing seriously wrong with them.

I don't usually go to the cinema on my own. Not after the last time - cinema was unexpectedly packed, and film (Bloodwork) was poor. But if I do, and because it's the summer and most of my cinema buddies are scattered over the UK, I'll remember to take a book. You're rant has become a public service, cheers :D

Yeh, i hate this, now ive started getting to the cinema at about the time the film sould start, so by the time i get in, i only to have a few minutes before it starts, usually i wait for a film to be out for at least 2 weeks unless it does badly so theres hardly anyone there

I love my theater, I never get bored waiting. It has these features about the latest up-coming Avril Lavigne clone, featurettes on theh making of movies, and these TNT "mini dramas". They may not be high art but the pre-show entertainment is a nice touch.

If I'm going to a movie by myself, I usually take a book with me to read before the movie starts. What the hell else am I gonna do...read the recycled ads on the screen over and over?

You sir, should work in a bookstore. I'm sold on the idea. Twelve, here I come :)
As for reading in the theatre, if it's before the movie starts, thats A OK by me. I often do the very same thing when seeing a film alone (yes, that's right, I have no friends. At least no friends with good taste in cinema. I'm not going to see Legally Blonde even if there was money involved).
However, to read during a film is another story all-together. It's an odd thing to do, considering the rather hefty price of seeing a film nowadays, but I'm not appauld by the concept. It merely strikes me as an odd decision. I can't see a movie theatre, during the actual presentation of the film, being an ideal place to read. But who am I to judge others actions; as long as it doesn't disturb my viewing experience, it's fine by me.

At first I thought you were saying that the ladies brought in a book to read DURING the movie, which would make no sense to me whatsoever. However, bringing a book into a theater to wait for a movie to start makes perfect sense to me. I've done it many a time myself. Especially when I have like 6 pages in a really good chapter that I want to finish... :)

EWWW! you hid the tacos AND SHIT IN HER PURSE?! I could make a whole rant about something like that! I know Taco Bell makes you do more than 'run for the border' but please, there's a bathroom just outside in the lobby! :p :D

Taco Bell? I actually sneak Chinese food into my theater! Whenever I see a couple of or more movies in one day (which is often), and when one of the movie's showtimes is around 6:00-7:00, I'll sneak in a Chinese gourmet dinner! Right next to my theater is a Chinese take-out place (and their food is really good!). I simply bring a plastic bag with a couple different newpapers (I bring the entertainment sections to read reviews of the movies coming out, of course, in between movie viewings), and hide the paper bag with the Chinese food in the plastic bag and cover it up with the newpapers. :D

Who the hell cares if they just want to read to pass time before the movie starts?
