As a lover of the original trilogy, I find the new trilogy bordering on unwatchable. They didn't have to be as great as the original, but they could have at least had a sense of fun. The new trilogy is too cold and heartless to be fun.
And the dialogue. The original trilogy didn't really have unintentionally bad dialogue, it was just intentionally campy to make fun of cheesy serials from the old days, and there were plenty of memorable lines. The new trilogy seems to forget it's origins. The dialogue in the new ones is bad, not in cheesy fun way, but in a cringe-worthy, dull way.
Characters. The characters in Star Wars IV-VI are generally loveable (bar villians) and unforgettably cool. The characters in the new...what characters? There are hardly any good characters at all, and all the good ones feel either tacked on or have almost zilch screentime. The characters that have the most screentime are boring, annoying, and/or forgettable.
The special effects are incredibly overbaked. The original had a lot of effects, but where only used when really needed. Here we have CGI characters...RED FLAG! I can understand a Dobby or a half-formed T-1000 or a Gollum being CGI, but most of the CGI characters here can easily be done by a guy in a costume/make-up. Some may think it would look bad, but I disagree. At least it would look more organic than the CGI if it were bad, because the CGI in the new trilogy either looks rubbery or weird in movement but not quite rubbery. It just doesn't seem organic, it just looks like a computer image, which it is, but the CGI is supposed to look believable as opposed to what it is.
Acting. See writing.
Anyone else agree?

I really dislike the old Star Wars movies but I fucking LOATHE the new ones (Phantom Menace gets a 1/10 from me, AOTC gets a 5/10 from me). There's your answer.

Then why did you give Empire and New Hope 7/10 and Jedi a 6? That isn't spectacular, but those are reasonably high ratings.

i have very, very fond memories of the star wars trilogy. 3 of my favorite films of all time. i do not like these memories tampered with. the new trilogy is almost terrible. as a star wars fan, i denounce the new films. they should have never been made in the first place.

I loved the original movies. Not because I thought they represented genius filmmaking (I never confused them with Citizen Kane) but because they were fun.
I think that some of the criticism leveled towards the new trilogy has something to do with unreasonable expectations. Anyone who went into these movies expecting good acting and well written dialogue obviously either hasnt seen the first three movies, or they mistakenly walked into the wrong theatre. Its a Star Wars movie, the dialogue and acting are supposed to be bad. Its really all about the cool fight scenes and spaceships.
That being said, I have been dissapointed with the new movies. They just dont capture the excitment and aura that the original flicks did. Lyrik mentioned the lack of cool characters and I definately agree with that point. There is no one in the new movies that is anywhere near as fun as Vader or Han Solo or Chewbacca.
I still enjoyed the movies, but I dont think they have been as good as the first three.

None of the fuckheads in the new series even add up to one iota of the coolness Harrison Ford brought to the scene as Han. Mark Hamill may have not been the best actor, but he was one hell of alot better than Hayden Christensen, who in my opinion looks like a drooling moron on the screen in SW. Yoda, who used to be awesome and wise is now some kind of retared bouncing guy. Leia was attractive, sure she's no Natalie Portman, but Carrie Fisher had screen presense, good comedic timing and was a strong actress. Natalie Portman oozes sexiness, but is nothing compared to Carrie Fisher acting wise. The writing sucks, these new CGI effects blow. I personally like the older ffects better, these new ones look incredibly computer generated and are laughibly cartoonish. I hate the new SWs movies.

I would say it has to do with identifiability. We can identify with Luke wanting more to his life and to explore and see more things. We can identify with the rebellion being the "underdogs" and trying to fight oppression. We cannot however, identify with the already powerful Jedi's and Queens and senators. Just can't.

That's another major factor in the blandness and dullness of the new films. The characters make you feel detached. The only thing remotely interesting about ANY of the new characters is Portman's sexy costumes. *drools* Dooku may be played by Christopher Lee but is given little screentime.

Well, let's not forget Leia's sexy costume in Return of the Jedi. But yes, I agree that the newer Star Wars movies are dull and lacking. Attack of the Clones was so jampacked with CGI that I thought I was gonna have a seizure. :D

True, the movies are dull and lacking. However, I really hate the awful dialogue. Geez, is it that hard to write decent dialogue?
Who can argue the brilliance of these lines:
"I don't know. Mesa day startin pretty okee-day with a brisky morning munchy, then BOOM! Gettin very scared and grabbin that Jedi and POW! Mesa here! Mesa gettin' very very scared!"
"I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth."
"From the moment I met you, all those years ago, not a day has gone by when I haven't thought of you. And now that I'm with you again... I'm in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you- I can't breath. I'm haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating...hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me......what can I do?- I will do anything you ask."
Shit, it puts Shakespeare to shame.
and...
"One day, I will become the greatest Jedi EVER!! I will even learn how to stop people from dying!!"
Muahaha. I think he will.

I remeber seeing some deleted scenes from Attack of the Clones, scenes with advanced the relationship between Anakin and Amidala. Even though these scenes added depth to the movie, since they didn't have any CGI creatures or battles, Lucas took them out, in his words "to get to the good parts" if I remeber correctly. I think this is a good example of what the hell went wrong with the latest Star Wars movies. George Lucas seems to think he can substitue a good script and good acting with CGI. So what he ends up with visually stunning movies that are totally hollow. No wounder The Empire Strikes Back was by far the best Star Wars film yet made - Lucas had the least creative control over this installment.
Also does anyone else notice a trend in Star Wars movies? Ever since Return of the Jedi, they all friggin' end the same! There always seems to be a huge ground battle, a space battle, and a lightsaber duel going on simultaneously - you know there's other ways to end a story George, you should try it some time.
And then the casting...Jake Lloyd was horrible but I honestly think Hayden Christensen was worse - he made Anakin Skywalker into a whiny, spoiled brat instead of a conflicted, powerful young man who would eventually become Darth friggin' Vader!
I'd actually go one step further and say yes this new trilogy sucks so far, but Jedi wasn't on par with the original or with Empire when you get down to it. For instance, in Jedi they have to blow up the death star... um... deja vu anyone? And don't get me started on the Ewoks (although my friend's uncle actually played an Ewok on Jedi - seriously)
Anyways, I don't have much hope for the third installment in the new Star Wars trilogy, unless Lucas realizes that he's obsessed with CGI & is out of ideas and gets another director & writer to work on the thrid installment. I would so love to see someone like David Fincher work on #3 - this episode HAS to be the darkest Star Wars story by it's very nature, and I think someone like him could really pull it off. But alas, I sincerely doubt anything like this will ever happen. Oh well, at least we have The Matrix and LOTR trilogies to serve as the real successors to the original Star Wars trilogy, classic sci-fi epics that don't suck.

MarkItZero, I know the dialogue is supposed to be bad, but originally it was intended to be in a campy way. To me the dialogue in the new trilogy is just cringeworthly wooden, and not in a campy way.

Everyone's pretty much voiced my feeling on this especially SlimX, who gave the quotes i was pretty much going to give.
UGH, i hate that damn sand line...and the agony line as well yuck.
The one thing i hate the most from both of the new star wars movies is when Jake Lloyd in the first movie says "Yippiieeeee!" when he finds out he can go with the Jedis...that one line there just shows how bad this kid acts (I really couldn't stand him)...
Other lines from the first movie...
"Jar-Jar Binks: Ooh moi moi I love you!
Qui-Gon Jinn: You almost got us killed! Are you brainless?
Jar-Jar Binks: I speck!
Qui-Gon Jinn: The ability to speak does not make you intelligent. Now get out of here. "
Wut is wrong with the writer?!! These are such pointless lines that are ugh horrible...
At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge.
This one isn't *that* bad but it's such a cliched line. In fact the entire body of dialogue both of the new SW movies are cliched...

Uh, no, that's ok. I liked Menace better than Jedi, and Clones better than all save Empire. So I like the Prequels just fine, thank you very much.

In the old days I could watch Star Wars, Empire and Return whenever they were on without ever losing interest, times changed and I eventually outgrew them...thanks to the new trilogy...unfortunately it was my disgust at them that made me look back and realize that the first 3 wern't the great works of art people always claimed they were.
