I just saw Wrong Turn (it came out here in the UK last weekend) and I have to say I am very impressed! I'm a big fan of the old 70s horror movies that were genuinely scary (i.e. before the endless slashathons of the 80s and the 'ironic' Scream movies and clones of the 90s - although I must stress that I love all of these movies too!) and where House of 1000 Corpses tried to emulate this era and partially succeeded (the problem being that it played more like an 82 minute Rob Zombie video than a truly scary horror movie), Wrong Turn feels like a cross between Deliverence and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and in my opinion works really well.
*partial spoilers in this section - highlight to read*
OK, there are some of the usual cliched characters in attendence (can we please have a movie without a 'stoner' kid in it! Please!!) and within the first twenty minutes the kids that indulge in carnal relations (not to give anything away) buy the farm, and there's the almost obligitory "he's not really dead" bit at the end , although I did like the (almost) post-credits final scene. despite it being somewhat predictable - I had actually stood up to leave when it took us by surprise, so just wait a moment when the credits start to roll! :)
What I really liked about it though was the almost constant sense of dread that pervades this movie. The sequences in the woods (of which there are many) are shot very nicely, giving a real sense of menace. There are no really dumb reactions from the kids (although they do hang around in the cabin for longer than even morbid curiosity would allow ;) and the sequence in the tree-tops, while exciting and effective, is also highly implausable (unless they're descended from Doctor Zaius ;) ) .
OK, I'm rattling on way too long here! I liked it. A lot. In terms of the subject matter, it wasn't quite as effective as the third-season X-files episode Home (which for me remains one of the creepiest hours of television ever), but it completely satisfied my aching for a genuinely creepy 70s throwback movie, even down to the sub-90 minutes running time!
In my opinion, highly recommended! 9/10.

I just saw this last night when I took my friend to the cheap shows for "expoiltation horror movie night." Of course, the menu consisted of WRONG TURN and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES. He didn't enjoy HO1KC that much, but he loved WRONG TURN. I love both movies, but WRONG TURN was much more scary. This is the first time in so long where the deaths disturbed me and scared me at the sheer brutality involved in them. WRONG TURN and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES get two thumbs up from me. They both succeed on different areas in the expoiltation genre, and I savored every minute.

I must say I really enjoyed this movie, too! It wasn't as scary as everyone was making it out to be (I'm a wimp, and I only jumped a few times), but it was an interesting idea that we haven't seen a lot of recently.
The acting was good, the scenery was beautiful (was it really W. Virginia?), and I enjoyed the highly creative deaths (although I did feel sympathy for each of the victims, because I pretty much liked everyone).
*SPOILER*
The most creative death I've seen in a long time HAS to be when the girl's face is split in half by the man in the tree tops. It was horrifying, disgusting, and at the same time hillarious. I was actually sickened to the point of laughter. It catches you so off guard, because you think...hey, she's been with them for so long, they aren't going to kill her now...but then...SHABOOM...out with the pretty girl!
*END SPOILER*
Ooookey Dokey...I'm done going on and on :p
Wrong Turn: 6.5/10

MY THOUGHTS
I saw this movie 3 times. I loved it the first time 8/10 and I loved it the second time 8/10, but there is just something about the third time, I loved it even more.
There are some parts I missed the first 2 times I saw it, and I am glad I saw the movie tonight with no interuptions. Except these girls in the back screaming at everything, but it was all good... this is a horror movie!
**Spoilers**
The movie started out slow... very slow imo. But after they found the house, it just turned into a thrill ride. The movie overall wasn't very gory, but that chopping block was a bit gory and a little gross. The beginning credits were awesome too, but it was a bit stupid just to show the guys ear cut off. The first time I saw it, I was mad that the guy (in the blue shirt, forgot his name) didn't die, I was hoping Eliza Dushku would be the only surviver. And the ending, after the credits... do we really need a sequal? I mean this could go like Evil Dead, the sequal be a tiny bit worse then the original.
**end spoilers**
Overall a great movie if you need some chills and thrills.
9/10

At least it's made its money back. If I'm correct, I saw the production budget was 12 million. Pretty cheap, but last I saw it grossed just around 12 million. Once you get the overseas and rental totals figured in there it'll be a pretty little profit machine! :)

Well i don t agree with the comment about House but Wrong Turn was a brutally wounderful film.I think we as a horror community are going back to what real slashers are about.lata

you think so?is that why the genre is stooping to making remakes of suspiria, wicker man,TCM etc.....you ask me,the genre is running out of originality for the most part and the budget was $12 million, and so far has made around $14 million dollars in theaters.

Well, for those of you who didn't get to see this complete masterpiece, it did bomb with the critics in theaters (well, in the US here)so it'll be outta theaters and on to DVD rather quick I'd say. I'm gonna buy it cuz that movie was a huge fun ride!CRITICS SUCK!(Except you, Arrow!):D

I'm stunned to read that Wrong Turn did'nt fare too well in America . Most of the critics in the UK have got it right in stating it's the best film of it's kind for years .
It's had almost universaly favourable reviews . I just saw it and enjoyed evry minute . Wrong Turn is , that very rare thing , a real horror movie ......... 8/10

Most reviewers can't differentiate between the "art" of film and popcorn movies. Wrong Turn ROOLS, very rarely does hollywood care to make a quality horror film. I can't blame them too much, sounds from this thread that even some horror fans skipped wrong turn, but I'm sure some of those are gonna see F v. J in the theaters (I will, even though it's probably crappy like most sequels).
As a horror fan it's up to US to see ALL major studio and indy films that get a decent release, even if you don't really want to. GO SEE Wrong Turn, 28 Days, and whatever else comes out, take your friends, drive the box office schmoes!!

Couldn't agree more, Jack - I try and get to as many horror flicks at the cinema as I can, not only to support the genre generally, but because I like sitting in a dark room watching chaos, mayhem and bloodshed on a 60 foot screen! ;)
I saw Wrong Turn twice. The first time was boring and the second time was 'boringer', if you will. The only reason I saw it a second time was simply because of Desmond Harrington...what a sexy, sexy man...and Jeremy Sisto's pretty damn hot too...and Kevin Zegers *highlight*even though he's only in the movie for, like, 5 minutes.** So in conclusion, the first time I paid 5.25 to be bored and the second time, I paid 50 cents for the hot, hot men. I paid 5.75 to see the move twice in the theatres when it would cost me that much to rent it from Blockbuster. Go deals!

Saw this last night...its really damn good!
Really original kills and good suspense!
Some of the kills took me by surprise!
And the film amazed me with its grittiness!
I liked the scenes in the tree tops/watchtower the best. Lots of suspense.
"Id dont want to be burned alive or cut into little pieces, so Im gonna jump!"
The bad guy crazy/family was awesome! I think these three maniacs were a very memorable threesome! We dont know jack shit about em, for fucks sake we dont even know their names, but boy were they cool! The very tall one with the bow and arrow was the scariest one in my opinion, he just looked like one mean mother, and the skinny one with that crazy laugh...I think they were memorable characters for the new generation. Kinda like the leatherface for the new millenium.
The only thing I see is that, now that TCM remake is coming out soon, the idea of a crazy murderous cannibal family living out in the middle of nowhere is gonna feel kinda used.
Oh and yeah, did "Arrow in the Head" take a new meaning for you guys after thid movie? ;)
