I blindly bought this movie, and watched it today. You can find it at your local blockbuster, should you choose to do so.
With that out of the way, here is a break down of the movie.
Plot Synopsis
Mary's an attractive high school senior who's obsessed with horror flicks. After she sees the latest horror hit,
"The Wisher," deadly consequences begin to unfold. Someone or something is granting Mary's wishes in the most violent and perverted ways. High school just became a living hell.
Your nightmares begin when this movie ends.....
The back of the dvd case, boasts
that it's 'The Ring Meets A Nightmare on Elm Street', and while there are some similarities to both movies, it captures more of The Ring vibe, rather
then NOES. There are'nt many kills in this, which was some what of a let down, as the killer looked pretty damn cool, but said killer was more background fodder, I.E. rarely seen.
It is a very well acted movie for a low budget STV movie, but where it fails,
is the fact that the movie doesn't know
what genre to stick to, it fell to pieces, and I'm still trying to figure out what type of movie it really is. But despite this I still had a good time, because as I said, the acting was really well done.
Liane Balaban, who plays Mary, has passing resemblances to,
Heather Langenkamp, Meridith Monroe,
and Piper Pearbo. She is really pretty, and as the main actress, she is the glue that really holds this movie together. She has good lungs, and can become the next scream queen should she pursue acting solely in horror.
She has this vulnerability about her,
as someone who sleepwalks, and has weird dreams, such as seen in the beginning.
Drew Lachey, who is one of the singers in the pop group 98 degrees, also does surprisingly well for his first acting gig, and manages to come off as genuinly creepy, and if you don't go for your pop stars or rappers in movies, well I say let that go for a few minutes, as truthfully, he's only in a handful of scenes, and again, he does good though. He should stop the singing, and pursue acting. I never thought I would say that about any pop star.
Well, except for Aaliyah, as she was a talented actress, IMO.
Then there is the school psychiatrist who is played nicely by Ron Silver.
He does well, and to be honest, if he was a real psychiatrist, I'd seek him out for that extra help. I don't know why a school has a resident psychiatrist, and well, it was pretty nifty that they had one, and no, it wasn't a private school either.
But that doesn't matter, really.
He plays his part cool, calm and collective. But also, there were a few scenes where I thought he acted strangely.
As for the killer, I don't think that lable fits him/her well, because like I said, there isn't enough killing being done.
But the things that were done, were pretty cool.
Despite my little gripes, I still found myself enjoying every minute of it.
Now for the gore part, well, about the only thing that you will get, is a sliced off tounge, the killer slicing the hell out of him/herself, and a face/body slashing to the none to nice
female type bully.
And a bloody cake.
Nudity, you get a booby shot from said bully girl, that's about it.
Again, and this will be the last time I say a word about the acting, but everyone did a fantastic job, and that had a lot to do with me finishing the movie. From the main heroine, to her little sister, everyone did a great job.
As for my score...........7.5/10
So give it a shot, you may just like it.
