IMHO the best mindfuck movies nowadays come from young maverick spanish filmmakers. Their movies are dark, eerie and very unsettling. 'Tras el Cristal'is one of the most disturbing movies I ever saw, Tesis was great and 'Los sin nombre' (the Nameless) actually kept me up at night. And let's not forget 'the Devil's Backbone'!
Yes freaks, keep your eyes on Spain!
(I suddenly realize there is a 'foreign horror talk' in Arrow's, where this might be more appropriate.....feel free to move!)

Spanish horror rocks! I've watched THE NAMELESS and THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE a couple of times and these two films are definitely among the creepiest stuff I've seen in a while. I also liked TESIS (1996[?]), a haunting thriller about snuff movies (and miles ahead of crap like 8MM in terms of quality)... damn, some of the images in this flick really freaked me out!

P.S.: I actually love cheesy 70's Spanish horror. THE GHOST SHIP OF THE BLIND DEAD was one of the first horror films I've seen in my life (at the age of 7 if memory serves). *sigh* Sweet memories...

Damn right the Spanish Horror genre is equal only to the japanese.

THE NAMELESS, DEVILS BACKBONE, THESIS, OPEN YOUR EYES and CRONOS are all superb examples...

Would also add Nacho Cerda's AFTERMATH, as confrontational as cinema can be.

PS- wrote a review of "Nameless" in the Video Reviews section but had only one response.

Cronos is actually Mexican, Deckard.

If you like spanish horror, watch this film from the same director than Los Sin Nombre:

DARKNESS (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0273517)
