I blind bought Nosferatu on a hunch. The front of the DVD case said it was voted one of the five greatest German films of all-time, so I figure it has to be good. Plus I really needed to see a few more silent films, and it was only 4 bucks.
I bought, and watched. Wow, what a good movie. Granted, it has flaws, but overall, a tremendously creepy atmosphere. Max Schreck does a great job, and a creepy job. His onscreen precense is just "eerie".
All in all, I give this classic a 9/10. Just...great.
Thoughts? Views? Opinions? Funny jokes?

I enjoyed it. I think I'd of liked it better, but I thought the scoring of the version I saw was kind of bad (it was all electronic.. DIdn't fit IMO). Max Schrek is really the highlight, as well as some awesome cinematography - like the famous use of shadows and other effects. Cool stuff.
I'm having trouble giving it a rating though. I have to say I was a little disappointed in it overall, but then again, I'm not really a big fan of artsy movies usually. So I'll say 7/10.

Agreed completely. 4$? Damn, good bargain, dude.
This is one I definately want to add to my collection, an excellent vampire tale and very authentic looking for its time as well.
A great companion piece to it would be "Shadow Of The Vampire". An amazing and very loose "making-of" Nosferatu movie. How Dafoe didn't win the Oscar for his portrayal of Schrek, I'll never know.

That's Dafoe in the second picture, great performance by him as usual...

One of the most creepiest movies I've ever seen. The haunting atmosphere, score, cinematography and Max Schreck's amazing performance are the strengths of this movie. 9/10

I agree 100%! I happen to think Benicio Del Toro's performance in Traffic was very overrated, and Willem Dafoe deserved that Oscar hands-down. Truly an awesome performance. Shadow of the Vampire (8/10) is a very good movie, too, and the perfect companion piece.
Nosferatu (9.5/10) is my single favorite silent film, and one of my favorite horror movies ever. Fantastic movie that I could watch over and over, and Max Schreck is amazing. I recommend you all check out Germany's 1979 remake, Nosferatu, the Vampyre (9/10). It's nearly as good as the incredible original.

Oh yeah, top-notch stuff right here. 8 or 9/10, I need to watch it again. Anyway, I bought it for 6 dollars (same dvd as Movie-Maniac I believe). Max Shreck is scary as all hell in this one.

What is the soundtrack like on the versions you guys have? Mine was some kind of electrical stuff. It just didn't fit. I think a classical soundtrack would of helped enourmously.

I've only seen Herzog's 1979 version and I thoroughly enjoyed it. How far did Herzog's movie stray from the template set out by Munau's original? How do the movies compare in terms of atmosphere? I've been meaning to pick up the two-disc R2 DVD of the original for some time now. I'll get around to it eventually. I still need to complete my collection of Universal monster movie DVDs. I only have Frankenstien and Bride Of Frankenstein thus far.

It's not like it would be the first time. Metropolis? It's usually an attempt to make the movie more appealing to modern audiences...pretty fucking lame thing to do if you ask me. And disrespectful.

They are two totally different movies In my opinion.
The original is the better of the two but herzog pulls off a fantastic tribute of sorts in his own way.
The original nosferatu is one of the creepiest movies I have ever laid my eyes upon. Max Shreck is just get under your skin creepy. His whole presence as well as the "creepy old look" of the film makes it a unique viewing experience. The original nosferatu is a masterpiece of horror and I highly reccomend it to anyone looking for a creepy movie to watch late at night.
