View Full Version : Jared Leto as Colin Farrell's lover in 'Alexander'?

Dark Horizons

Normally to qualify going to bed with Colin Farrell the only thing you need is a pulse (maybe not even that), but to do it onscreen however is a much tougher list to crack. 'Hoohaa' gave it a try though and lets slip on who he thinks will try some Irish cream (and I ain't talking Baileys): "I am an actor in Ireland but recently read for Alexander - Oliver Stone's one in Dublin. In the last month hundreds of young Irish actors read Hepahastion for his casting director (though with the feeling this was only a test scene) - with a small minority getting a callback to meet Stone (not me this time!) but several friends. On Stone's return trip to Ireland two weeks back - Jared Leto was around town - and word was with those who auditioned that he may have secured Hephastion or Alexander's other male younger lover. He, Colin and some other actors were drinking in the Clarence (U2s bar) alongside his 'Intermission' co-stars Keri Condon and Laurence Kinlan - but I decided not to push the boat and ask. Though I also did hear that an Irish actor had secured the young Anthony Hopkins character".

Good casting choice? I don't mind it, Leto is a pretty good actor I say. It'll be a change for him, though he has always been an actor to take on different projects and varied roles. (Panic Room, Fight Club, Reqiem For A Dream, Highway, American Psycho).

Bisexual. Alexander The Great was bisexual, it's a known fact.

Jared Leto? Yea, I'm all for him. Truthfully I wasn't a big fan of his before but that's been starting to change recently. My interest in this version of Alexander the Great is now higher then the DiCarprio version simply because I love Oliver Stone works and I think Farrell can pull off a better Alexander then DiCaprio. We'll see.

Everybody at that time was bisexual. :) It was a cultural thing: you learnt about sex with men.

As for the casting...I like it. Only one thing's bothering me. On one hand we got Oliver Stone, Colin Farrell and Jared Leto participating in an ALEXANDER movie. On the other hand, we got Baz Luhrmann, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and perhaps Mel Gibson in an ALEXANDER movie. It's a shame one of them will have to fall to the other, be it by cancelling itself or by failing at the box-office...

I would compare it with woman today. Back then, everyone appreciated mens curves, so there was a lot of homosexual activity. Now everyone appreciates woman's curves, thats why there is all that lesbian fantasy crap.

I dunno if I would describe it as cultural, but that's just me.

Alexander came waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before Christianity, so therefore the dogma of homosexuality wasn't present, so you had this sort of unreigned "free-love" going on. The term bisexual didn't even exist really, it's just the way things were, almost without question. It was just as easy for a man to fall in love with another man as it was with a woman.

Hepahastion was Alexander's best friend from boyhood onto adulthood. They trusted and understood each other and were loyal friends. It wouldn't be too extreme to say that they loved each other because of that.

Aka, "cultural". In our Occidental society, what things are almost without question is monogamy and heterosexuality (even if homosexuality is tolerated, can't really say it's the norm) -- it's our culture. For some African tribes, what things are is that every man has half a dozen wives, no questions asked -- cultural again. Every implicit rule, be it sexual or anything else, has something to do with culture.

And yes, I'm learning loads at school. ;)

Alexander the Great? Colin Farrell? Bisexuality? COOOOOL :p

No, seriously, the media will make a huge fuss around it and it sure is a matter of dramatic and historical stuff..

Jared Leto playing Colin Farrel's better half in Stones Alexander the Great? I'm there. To me, this is shaping up to be the better version, and we get it sooner :)

Interesting. I think it's some good casting there, if it's true. It kinda suprises me, even though it's pretty widely known fact that he was gay or bisexual, that they would address it in the movie because so many people would be turned off by that and it also kinda suprises me that "ladies man" Colin Farrell would play the part that way. I agree with the guy that said that both of the Alexander flicks are looking really good and it's a shame one will likely fail. Oh well.

Jared Leto & Colin Farrell as gay lovers would be the type of couple that would march down the street holding hands while all the girls cried.

I don't see what all the fuss is about really. I mean the whole bisexuality was a fact of life back then. In fact if you were not bisexual people thought there was something really wrong with you. I personally think that Farrell and Leto would make a splendid pair in this adaptation if the whole thing is green lighted.

Great casting choice. Jared Leto is a painfully underrated actor. I'd say this is shaping up to be the better "Alexander" as well.

It's offical now. From DarkHorizons.

It was first rumoured here over a month ago, and now its official - Jared Leto has been cast as Hephaistion, the friend/confidante/lover of Alexander (Colin Farrell) in the Oliver Stone-directed epic.

Not a bad looking cast.

Jesus H. Cristo, that's one helluva stunning cast. I'm sure they're all very meticulously groomed and clean also, despite the time period the film is set in........

Ah who cares, its Angelina Jolie, she should look great. I think it's hard for her not to. Just look at all the press photos from the comicon. Even there she looked good.

http://www.chud.com/graphics8/AngelinaJolie2.jpg

for reference, that photo came from elsewhere (http://www.chud.com) , but it just goes to show how attractive that girl can look even if amateur photography scanned onto computers. Wooo sexy.

Ok that's it.
If there's no male frontal nudity, I am seriously going to write a personal letter to Mr. Stone demanding this much needed display. :p

Whoo hoo! Jared Leto and Colin Farrell! This can't get any better. Ya'll boys have Angelina, we girls get Leto AND Farrell. Boo yah!

Great cast. The bisexual thing doesn't bother me, but I'm sure it'll receive quite a backlash. It's a risky role and I hope it pans out for them.

Why do you expect a backlash? I mean, it's obvious that young girls will just be horrified at the notion of their boy toy Colin kissing another man. I don't see much backlash other than that; he is, after all, playing a historical figure.

But I agree, I hope this damn fine actor gets his props for taking on such a risky role. I admire him for doing it.

Tom Cruise will never play a role like this because he thinks it will jeopardize his integrity as a hetero Hollywood hero. But in the end he would just be an actor playing a role.

For a lot of people homosexuality and bisexuality is an uncomfortable subject, regardless of history. It carries quite a stigma in our society. Like you said, an actor such as Tom Cruise would be afraid to go near such a role because it would jeopardize the integrity of his image. There are negative attitudes towards such behavior and I think many close-minded people will shy away from the film because of that. It's something that shouldn't be a big deal, but I expect it will be.

Very true.

I'm sure the movie will cause a little stir because of the nature of the role. I just hope Farrell gets the right kind of attention for doing it... and not just for the fact that he is playing a bisexual.

Everyone was not bi-sexual. There were many in the greek and Roman worlds, but outside of that most people were not. Even in the Greek world, marriages were not allowed between same sex, so it wasn't entirely approved of theere either.
Question, are they going to show alexander's female lovers too, or are they going to put an emphasis on him with other dudes?

Going by the IMDB's cast announcement, this film really has racked up an impressive cast for itself. Definitely looking forward to this one. Next to Farrell, Leto and Jolie, there's Anthony Hopkins, Rosario Dawson and Johnathan Rhys-Meyers

Jonathan Rhys Meyers?

Awwwww shite...Rhys Meyers is simply gorge, and no doubt he'll be up for a bit more boy-on-boy action a la Velvet Goldmine.

Damn and blast, I hope Mr. Luhrmann has something special up his spangly little sleeves.

Ok. That's it. This has officially become the version I am looking forward to.

Let's go through this methodically, shall we?

The dudes: Colin Farrell, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers...two very shaggable, talented actors undoubtedly getting all hot and bothered about one another. Fun for a watch.

The other dudes: Jared Leto, great actor with mucho potential. Anthony Hopkins, one of the best actors of our time. Period.

The chicks: Rosario Dawson...I can take or leave her. Angelina Jolie...uber-talented, uber-sexy...uber-awesome.

...I am truly, truly excited.

I believe both directors simply started working on Alexander the Great movies at the same time...I doubt it'd be the same script, but ever since there has been a bit of a race to see who sets theirs up first. I think we can obviously see who the winner is at this point...
