1. Smultronstallet (Wild Strawberries) - Spellbinding, absorbing tale that takes us deep into the conscience of the human mind like no film has done before; the astounding dream like atmosphere and beautiful acting are both unforgettable.
2. La Dolce Vita - Haunting, splendid images, beautiful, and memorable.
3. Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai) - As beautiful, gigantic, entertaining and masterful as far as epics and story telling goes. Great characters, made greater by the directorial style of Akira Kurosawa and the breathtaking performances of all the actors. Toshiro Mifune steals the show.
4. Persona - Symbolic and mysterious (in a very beautiful way), with that Bergman tone to it, and contains the most erotic scene ever filmed.
5. 8 1/2 - One of the definitive films about filmmaking. Tis a personal journey and sometimes VERY hard to understand, but the sequences and visuals tell the story in a provocative manner.
6. Det Sjunde inseglet (The Seventh Seal) - Great combination of fantasy, drama and horror, with blends of realism and astonishing elements.
7. Jules et Jim (Jules and Jim) - Tragic love story and depressing dramatic content, but at the end it always manages to have a lasting effect on audiences.
8. Da hong deng long gao gao gua (Raise the Red Lantern) - Flawless historical recount on Chinese histories and the lives of different concubines, in a society that we would never wish to live in.
9. Les Quatre cents coups (The 400 Blows) - Likable and endearing, with a central character that we can all relate to in the most familiar and strangest ways.
10. Huo zhe (To Live) - Excellent, but depressing and thought provoking Chinese epic.
11. Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) - A childhood fav, and the magic/charm is still there even after all these years.
12. Yin shi nan nu (Eat Drink Man Woman) - Charming and likable, a powerful focus on a ordinary but complicated family and the lives in which they live.
13. Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) - A dream ride into a bizarre, fantasy world, while remaining true to any child's and adult's heart.
14. Rashomon - Crime/mystery/adventure like no other filmmaker could make.....aside from the magnificent Akira Kurosawa.
15. Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander) - Not on par with some of Bergman's other films such as Persona, Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal, but it's entertaining to watch and a moving experience throughout.
16. Fa Yeung nin wa (In the Mood for Love) - Surrealisic, dream like atmosphere mixed with beautiful music, costumes and a doomed, tragic love story.
17. Ladri di biciclette (The Bicycle Thief) - Heart wrenching and sad, at the same time beautiful on every filmmaking aspect, as well as emotional.
18. L'Enfant sauvage (The Wild Child) - Simplistic but such a tearjerker.
19. Au revoir les enfants (Goodbye, Children) - A drama that every child should watch. Engaging and sweet to say the least.
20. Kakushi toride no san akunin (The Hidden Fortress) - Absolutely engaging adventure/comedy.

I am supprised that only one person has included Lola rennt (Run Lola Run) on their list.

I really enjoyed this movie. I'd say it's a tie between that and Amelie for my favorites. I also really enjoyed A la folie...pas de tout. The original Diabolique is up there too...great black & white old scary movie.

How do we define Foreign film? I don't consider the Dollar trilogy really foreign... Man, such a grey area.

I USUALLY say Foreign LANGUAGE film to seperate them, and count English releases in the same catagory, no matter the country.

But anyways, I don't have a numbered top list. For my #1 though, just look at my fav movie :)

Some other ones...

Life is Beautiful
All About Ah Long
Tiger on Beat
Bullet in the Head

Hmmmmm, the Dollar films are all Italian/Spanish/German co-productions, shot entirely in Spain and in the Cinecitta Studios in Rome. It can't get any more foreign if you ask me... well, maybe it could if Eastwood had somehow managed to learn and speak Italian ;)

So, in other words, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon could be considered a non-foreign film, right? Well, it was financed by Americans, and a lot of the crew is... Getting harder and harder to define, as the various film producing nations collaborate morea nd more.
