A few weeks ago I was hitching a lift back home with one of my mates and she was playing such an awsome CD. The voice was beautiful and the music was enspiraring and there were some really memoarble bits of music in there...not to mention the great baselines in most songs.

I only just remembered their name...it was Portishead...and now I really want a CD of theirs...the only ones I can find on the net so far are;

Portishead (self titled)
Dummy

Is there any more? Also, which are your favourate LPs of theirs?

Just thought I'd take on board some schmoe opinions before I start handing over my cash.

Thanks. :D

Those are there only two full length LP's. They have a live album out but buy those two albums. Portishead were one of the most influential British acts of the 90's.

Tracks like "Sour Times", "Numb", "Glory Box" and "Only You" are classics.

Both are very much worth spending money on. I'd bet she was playing Dummy though, as that one is the more popular by far.

There is also a live album that i've heard good things about. I did love Dummy but never got around to buying their second album.

The live album is excellent. Definately worth buying IMO.
I have also heard one of Beth Gibbons (the lead singer) solo cds. I didnt really get into it. But I only heard it a couple of times.

There has been a rumor for awhile that Portishead was making a new album, I dont know if its true, but I hope so.

I love both Portishead albums (don't have the live one). I love the fact that they recorded all the instruments - at least on the second - and put them on vinyl, then re-recorded the whole thing to have that authentic LP crackle....

I think the day Glory Box came out I was in an HMV, listening to records on the audiophones and thought 'fucking hell, I'm having a bit of this'. My mum later bought me the album as a Christmas present (she's cool, my mum) and I was immediately enamoured (and on some strange days rate the album over Massive Attack's Blue Lines - it's spiritual cousin). I am going to put the second album on right now and listen to Cowboys...

These forums. They make you go all misty-eyed, man.

Sour Times and Only You are two DAMN FINE songs.

Im pissed about Evanescence...take out that nu-metal influence and that chick sounds a hell of a lot like Portishead....and already has reached more sucess in the states!!!!!

Haunting, beautiful...and Kaufman's right about that gorgeous cracklin' sound.

The video for All Mine is stunning...and Only You is beyond brilliant.

I really should listen to more Portishead.

I love Portishead, I only have Dummy but I love it. It's an album that as soon as I've finished listening to it, I want to put it right back on again.

I was wondering how the self-titled album compares to Dummy. I've heard it is somewhat of a dissapointment but I want to hear some schmoes opinions on it.

Nah, man. Portishead's Eponymous is better - it's richer and fuller than Dummy, though admittedly darker and somewhat more gothic. I also meant to suggest you catch their short movie (I think it's called How To Kill An Arab - based on the Albert Camus book The Outsider, but it's been years since I seen it). You should get it; album and film.

OK after a few weeks I bought Dummy and I have to say it is awsome.

Afte many, many, many listens I'm loving it.

Tracks that stand out to me so far are
It's A Fire
Numb
Wandering Star
Strangers

Although all the tracks are amaing and Beth's voice is great. Is her solo stuff good?

This may sound like a stupid question but is Beth black? 'Coz on some songs she sounds it then on some she sounds white.
And howcome Portishead only released two LPs? Have they gone their seperate ways now or what? I'd just like to know...

I just picked up the self-titled album and Reigh was right.

It's great, not better than Dummy but about equal. It is much darker but there are some truly wonderful tracks on there. My favorites being Half Day Closing, Only You, and Western Eyes. I love it.

I'll try to check out that short movie, if I can get a hold of it. Thanks.

Portishead rock...one of my all time fave bands. Very mod for their time.
