I saw the other thread about the Pulp Fiction question about the gimp scene, but I have a more important question. I'll post my beliefs after I see some of your responses.

Here's the question:

What the hell is in the briefcase (that Jules and Vincent have to get for Mr. Wallace) that's so special? What do you Scmoes think it is? There is a big debate between my friends and I about this.

Nobody knows. Tarantino purposely doesn't tell or show you anything so you can take guesses on your own for fun.

So no one has an opinion?

True, Tarantino doesn't show us, but he gives us plenty of hints. My buddy and I look at it this way.

The briefcase contains Marcellus Wallace's soul.

How did I reach the conclusion?

Ok, it glows really brightly. Now, I suppose it could be gold. I thought that once too. But what does Wallace want with one briefcase of gold when he's already filthy rich? Plus, legend says that the devil removes a person's soul by pulling it through the back of their neck. And Tarantino gives us that long shot of Marcellus talking from behind his head, all the while focusing on a band-aid on the back of his neck.

Now, how did Brett and company get the soul from the devil? I don't know. And does the devil work at big Kahuna Burger? These are also interesting questions when this theory is introduced. I just think the film is much more interesting when viewed this way.

Not this question again. Check out snopes2.com, and look at the movie urban legends section and look for Pulp Fiction. It disproves the Bible theory. And it's not even a very interesting or logical thoery in itself. Bottom line: it's whatever you imagine, there's no right answer

I still really like the soul explanation. But yeah back in the day it was fun to have drunken/stoned conversations about this and other movie questions.

The soul thing isn't true, because Ving Rhames had a tattoo on the back of his neck, and the band-aid was covering it.

What's in the briefcase is just a fun question. There is no real answer.

i'm not sure i believe the whole soul theory. i sort of still think it's gold. even though wallace was already rich, isn't it common for people like that to only want more money and power? i think it was as simple as gold.

I think that Tarantino left this for the audience to decide what's in the briefcase. There have been many theories but it's up to you to decide what you think is in there. Me, I'm with those who think it might be gold.

That's an idea I like too. How'd I reach that conclusion? Read it somewhere on the Internet. :)

I think the briefcase can hold whatever you want it to hold. Tarantino probably doesn't know what's in it, Sam L. or John Travolta either, Roger Avary either. It could be anything.

This is old. I'm sure there's already been at least ten threads on the ol' "pulp-fiction: briefcase theory". The best answer to it I've ever heard..
Sam Jackson: What's inside the briefcase? A battery, two wires, and a light-bulb.

I knew it. As soon as I clicked on this thread I knew it was gonna be, "What's in the briefcase." Scary, there's a millions answers, and none of them can be proven. Although, if you look at it from the point of view of the filmmakers, it really was just an orange lightbulb:D

There is no answer, but I've always fancied the theory about the diamonds from Reservoir Dogs. But then this brings up the question about Wallace already being rich, why would he need some fucking diamonds? Well, lets say I have a movie that I don't watch anymore, don't really need, for all I know, it doesn't exist. But then a friend of mine comes over and steals it, no matter what, this is gonna piss me off because it was mine and it was stolen by someone I thought I could trust. Now, I know this is a pretty stupid comparison, but it's all I could think of.

I never cease to amaze myself.

From what I understand, according to Tarantino, it waws originally supposed to be diamonds, but then someone got the idea to put an orange lightbulb in there.

When people say that there's a light-bulb in the briefcase, they're speaking literally. That's what causes the light to shine out whenever the case is open. And QT has said that he never planned on having anything in the briefcase. Use your own imagination.

Well, I think its Marcellus's soul. Now I know that QT just wants you to use your imagination and my imagination is that it is Marcellus's soul. Oh, and I thought that the band-aid is there to cover up a scar, but the band-aid attracts more attention than a scar would. Maybe thats trying to tell us something... hmmm?

There are lots of previous threads dedicated to this question (not that this is a duplicate thread, because it's not. These threads are all older), so you might like to check these out...

But the answer is we can't possibly know, because Quentin never showed us. If "What was in the briefcase" was an SAT question, you'd have to fill in "D) Not enough info"

Quentin himself has said the soul theory isn't true.

It's a reference to that film with the portable nuke in a briefcase that shines that way. I think Repo Man has a similar reference.

I like the idea of it being Elvis' gold suit.
