View Full Version : The Scott Walker Thread - It HAD To Happen Sooner Or Later!!!

Well kids...I finally cracked...

Basically, this is a wee thread to taste the delights of Mr. Walker.

Come one and all...chat away about his 'delish' VOICE and rather dashing good looks, his surreal lyrics and aloof manner...

Here is some info about Scott courtesy of www.artistdirect.com

http://www.artistdirect.com/showcase/rock/photos/scottwalker.gif

For the uninitiated who ask "who the hell is Scott Walker?" we offer the following clues:

Fact: Former lead singer of the Walker Brothers, whose "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)" was a nugget of mid-'60s pop purity. Other hits included the Bacharach/David penned "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "Archangel," songs that cemented the Brothers place in pop history.

Fact: Launched a vital solo career after moving to England in the late '60s following the break-up of the Walker Brothers. Recorded a series of dark, brooding fully orchestrated albums that were ground-breaking for their subject matter, pure passion and previously unexpressed levels of ennui. Deemed too strange for American audiences, who didn't "get it," three of the four albums Walker released during the period were top-5 U.K. hits. Scott was a major celebrity, with his own U.K. variety show and a legion of rabid fans.

Yet another fact: Though relegated to little-known cult status in the U.S., Walker's songs influenced a generation of British recording artists, especially David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Julian Cope (who compiled the U.K. collection Fire Escape In The Sky: The Godlike Genius Of Scott Walker), Nick Cave and Marc Almond. Today, members of Scott's following include Peter Buck, Eric Matthews and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker.

Most important fact: It's Raining Today is the first-ever American release that collects in one place all the best, most expressive Scott Walker recordings from the five albums he recorded during the late '60s. Included are his own twisted originals as well as his versions of songs written by fellow tortured soul Jacques Brel. Extensive liner notes make this a must for musicologists of all stripes.

So there you have it...TRY a bit of Scott for size, I swear..you won't regret it folks...:)

PS - I am merging this thread with one that Bowieee kindly opened many months ago.

I tried to MERGE...I've MERGED before kids, honestly I have...anyway, something strange happened...and now it says that Bowieee composed this post (little thievin' magpie) and he certainly dang-diddly-didn't...'twas I...and all of Bowieee's posts that I tried to MERGE (y'know, like I'd done so many times before)...just disappeared without a trace...poof! Just like that...they were GONE, so anyway...I tried to get 'em back, FUCK knows I tried...I edited, and went back and forth, and clasped my hands and played to the good lord, Jesus Christ...but the posts were long gone...and it just said that Bowieee had composed MY post...and there were 15 tooting replies, and there clearly wasn't any replies YET, none whatsoever...not a ONE - as I'd just composed the post with me own nimble fingers...of course there WERE the posts I tried to MERGE, but oh, they were long gone...I'd already tried to get them back, but alas...they never did return. So anyway...YES, I've BROKE THE GODDAMN BITCHIN' FORUM.

 Good job bcv with those moderating skills of yours..deleting my hard work on all my scott walker posts and then breaking the thread. :)

Well anyways I looooooooove this guy's music. To the point of obessively listening to it day in and day out. Walker was a full blown class A genius and his songs reach certian emotions of mine that songs rarely touch. He just has this beautiful way of putting life's stories into lyrics that shine with a light of their own. The Girls from the streets has to be one of my top ten favorite songs of all time. Everytime I hear it, even if it's the 1ooo millionth time it takes my breathe away and I end up listening like a toddler hearing the best bedtime story they have ever heard.

My hats off to you scotty boy whever you may be......

I only own a best of collection that covers both his work as part of The Walker Brothers and his solo stuff. It's all sublime and beautiful in an elegantly wasted kind of way. I keep meaning to buy Scott 1,2, 3 & 4. Perhaps i'll buy them tomorrow and comment on them tomorrow night. That would be fun. Listen to the four of them back to back and review each song as it plays. An experiment of sorts. Hmmm. I might just do that.

Do that...FUCK Psycho, you truly SHOULD do that.

Jesus, that's a TOP idea for a new thread. We should all do that.

The "Best Of" Walker collection just doesn't cover enough ground. Scott 2 and 4 in particular are stand-alone albums...and Tilt, well...that's like NOTHING on this green earth.

PS: This thread now reads 7 posts. My humblest apologies Bowieee luv, I truly DIDN'T DO IT.

Psycho...I do reckon that's a fab idea mate...and if you DO indeed go through with it you MUST start a new thread...it's a potential work of genius...lots of jumbled brain-mess as you sporadically spew your thoughts.

In fact, remember Bowieee's idea about a mass schmoe filmy watching thingy...!?

WE SHOULD DO THAT WITH MUSIC!!!

There are enough SCHMOES with the same CD's.

Wow...we've GOT to do this.

I really need to stop drinking this full-fat coke, I'm getting all giddy now.

I used to like Scott Walker, and I own Scott Walker 4. Then somebody chose to play Matilda down the phone to me when they were drunk and I have never felt the same way since. I have been SCARRED for life.

He still looked mighty COOL Bowieee...shorn greyish (slightly wavy) hair and a tight fitting dark sweater and denims...nothing particularly attention-grabbing.

His speech was VERY short and simple, he thanked the UK for embracing his music and gave Jarvis a hug before collecting his award.

Ooooh, it bought a tear to my eye.

Interesting SCOTT fact from last night's episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

In the mid sixties Scotty-boy faked a car crash in order to worm his way out of a series of gigs in the UK. He said he had crashed into a tree...and got his manager to hit him in the face...with a fucking BRICK no less...

TWICE!!!

:D

Bloody madness.

I'm currently reading a Scotty biography...and it's fucking FASCINATING to say the least.

The man was seriously haunted throughout his glory days...and desperately insecure about his talent, believe it or not.

Walker would SOB for hours before going on stage. He would CLAW his face, have panic attack's and often had to be coerced - and on the rare occasion, PHYSICALLY FORCED - into performing.

Now that car-crash story makes perfect sense. Still not sure about the BRICK in the coupon though ;).

Scott was, and still is TERRIFIED of singing in public...hence the dark glasses and the detached exterior.

Scott also battled severe alcoholism and depression for many, MANY years. He attempted suicide in the mid-60's and retired to a monastery shortly afterwards. He would often drink himself into oblivion (whisky & coke was his tipple) and weep into the wee small hours. Walker became SO paranoid that he had to be sedated in order to travel by air.

He truly is a troubled, and deeply intriguing blokey.

I was holding out for it as a Crimbo gift. My shag saw it in the shops but presumed I already had the albums included (ignorant nutter, never listens to me)...so Gaultier Fragile took it's place.

Granted I've got about 75% of the tracks included...but I'll be snapping it up when I'm a bit more flush.

Link to a review of said box set, with some brief thoughts and the quality of previous releases, and fist shakin for what's not on there. They say it's incomplete but essential.

Have only heard to Walker songs to date (the bizarre Funeral Tango, and sumfin forgettable) but will buy Scott 4 or Tilt soon.

I'd recommend Scott 2 or 4 to ease you in gently, both extremely brilliant records IMO.

Tilt is some wicked-good shite, but it's probably not IDEAL for a Walker virgin. His banshee-like caterwaul frightened the living piss outta me first time round.

...so I walk into HMV today...lured in by the huge signs in the window screaming SALE!!! First thing I spot is Parallel Lines by Blondie for 3.99. I pull a crumpled 10.00 note from the depths of my trouser pocket (trying hard not to look like i'm groping myself as I sift through the receipts, notes to self, and sweet wrappers that have accumulated over the last couple of days). Then I notice that they have Scott I, II, III and IV for a measly 4.99 each. It's back into my trouser pocket for another grope and I pull forth my credit card, grab all four Scott Walker albums and head for the nearest cash point trying really hard to not think about how the 1499 I spent on a new PC has left me almost destitute. When I arrive home I throw Scott IV into my CD player having heard that it's the best of the bunch (i'm an instant gratification junkie). Having now finished listening to it I have to say it's a masterpiece and a damning indictment of the lazy indifference that has led to so many amazing album sliding under the radar of the record buying public. This is an album that failed to make more than the tiniest of dents in the public consciousness upon it's release and in all the years since has managed only to claw back a fraction of the recognition it deserves. I've arrived at this opinion after only one listen. I've yet to listen to the other three albums. To be continued...

Wahey!!!

Join the club Psychodude...

In response to Bowieee's post, here are my all-time favourite Scotty tunes in a bit of an order*...

1. Always Coming Back To You (Scott)
2. The Girls From The Streets (Scott 2)
3. Big Louise (Scott 3)
4. Rhymes Of Goodbye (Scott 4)
5. Plastic Palace People (Scott 2)
6. Best Of Both Worlds (Scott 2)
7. Get Behind Me (Scott 4)
8. Next (Scott 3)
9. Such a Small Love (Scott)
10. The Seventh Seal (Scott 4)
11. If You Go Away (Scott 3)
12. The Plague (Boy Child)
13. Montague Terrace (In Blue) (Scott)
14. Mathilde (Scott)
15. Jackie (Scott 2)
16. Hero Of The War (Scott 4)
17. It's Raining Today (Scott 3)
18. The Old Man's Back Again - Dedicated To The Neo Stalinist Regime (Scott 4)
19. Boy Child (Scott 4)
20. Amsterdam (Scott)

*Tilt and Pola X not included. The former because I feel it's an album 'experience' as opposed to a bunch of seperate songs. The latter because it's still relatively new to me.

The thing with Scott is a particular song can just go on ignored - let's face it, his albums are overwhelming on the whole - and then one day without any warning, POW! You're suddenly hearing this little gem in a whole different light. The most recent example of this..."Best Of Both Worlds", a song I hadn't really 'heard' before last week. But I just fucking LOVE it all of a sudden. The Bond-esque strings during that awesome show-stopper of a chorus and the build-up and the way Walker says "Make your fickle mind up...I won't stay while you enjoy" (listen to the first "enjoy", seriously...it makes me melt! :)) Then there's the lyrics, man THE LYRICS!!!

Anyway, I'm rambling.

Gawd bless ya Scott. Hurry up with the new album man...I'm gagging for it!!!

So we've heard. ;)

Anyway...the reasons I haven't followed up on my previous post with an opinion of the other albums are legion. I've suffered an influx of quality sounds lately and i've spread myself a little thin. Scott Walker's albums really need some time to sink all of their hooks into your subconscious. I'll be back in a month or so after i've immersed myself in their majesty a little more.

Wow...same here with Rhymes Of Goodbye, hence it's place on my list at No.4. I get the feeling it's a real swan song for Scott. It's also one of the few songs in which he attempts runs (as Paula 'Abdool' and Randy Jackson call 'em)...you know when he sings "fli-i-i-i-iy" and stuff. D'ya understand what I'm saying here?

He's usually a pretty straightforward crooner, but he's just that little bit more soulful when he steps outside of his own box. See his version of Aint No Sunshine too. Methinks Walker should be a bit more ambitious with the runs, he's certainly got a knack for them.

On a completely different note...I'm considering building a Scott Walker site. I've yet to find a decent one on the net. Somewhere to showcase his fantabulous lyrics and spread the love and stuff. What do you reckon?

I think it's a cracking idea. I'm thinking about starting some sort of site myself. I've bought the books that tell you how and i'm just waiting until I get a little bit of me time so I can set about trying to wade through the required schooling. I have too much stuff going on right now and all the distractions won't really allow me to devote any time to something as big as designing a website. Perhaps i'll get a chance to start when i'm off for a week in September. You should definitely give the Scott Walker site a go though.

I say do it!

Seriously it's a fucking crime that there is so little information on the internet about Scott. It's high time someone built a little tribute site for him.

Woohoo, glad you kids are into it.

Fortunately I have a designer on my side (that'd be my long suffering better half) so I'm hoping to create something rather spectacular.

We're actually thinking of doing 10 sites in whole...the bandwidth is available via David's company, so it's just a case of putting them together.

We've sort of decided on Scott as our first one...future projects will most probably include Kes, Alan Bennett, something Manchester/Hacienda orientated and U2.

Watch this space.

Errr, anyway...I'm currently listening to Scott (1). Bye eck, I have such a crush on this man.

*Bump*

I've been searching 4AD (Scott's record label) for news on his upcoming album and I can't find anything except this:

Scott Walker, legendary singer who inspired many others, including Brendan Perry, is now signed to 4AD. Expect an album in 2005.

Aside from that, not a sausage.

It's interesting to see some of the other artistes currently signed to 4AD mind...

BLONDE REDHEAD
BREEDERS
FIFTY FOOT WAVE
KRISTIN HERSH
MOUNTAIN GOATS
THROWING MUSES
TV ON THE RADIO
MOJAVE 3
DEAD CAN DANCE

Past artists include...

COCTEAU TWINS
THE PIXIES
BAUHAUS
THE BIRTHDAY PARTY
MODERN ENGLISH
RED HOUSE PAINTERS

C'mon Scott...WE'RE DYING HERE!

Why does E.T. love Reese's Pieces?

Because they have the same flavor that cum does on his home planet

All very kick ass artists to share a label with. Alot of those bands tour through San Diego really frequently so the label doesn't ignore us when it comes to touring. I know walker hates to tour but there is always hope.....

I'm currently TRYING to create my Scotty site (It's pure hard work since there's not a lot of photographic evidence of the man around)...but I'm hoping to get it up and running ASAP.

Until then...this dude has updated his LYRICS site, and it's quite comprehensive,

http://kouros.kapsi.fi/scott/?page=start

Enjoy fellow Scott freak(s), a.k.a Bowieee ;).

Thank You!

I've wanted to print out some of his lyrics for ages now.

Thank God for the information super highway.
