Gimme your address and i'll send you a box of hankies. :D
Seriously though...i've heard a little Elliot Smith and i've thus far liked the little i've heard. Been intending to check out some of his albums for a while now but i'm suffering from a surplus of great music right now. Here's a little tip though. Check out a band called Iron & Wine. Their music is likely to appeal to Smith fans. The album is called 'And The Creek Drank The Cradle'. It's a quiet masterpiece.

Smith doesn't get me teary but he sure as hell gets me introspective. I get really thoughtfull whenever I listen to one of his album. The man could write.

Big Girls BLOUSE.
*points and chuckles*
I can't say Smith gets me "teary of eyes"...but Walker certainly has before now, same goes with Joy Division, and Lou Reed...FUCK, Dolly Parton had me reaching for my 'kerchief once.
Hmmm, The Holy Bible also...the Manics old stuff is just...heartbreaking, truly is.

Ah...I see. Well done my son.
I've been meaning to check out quite a few of the bands on your list. Definitely want to check out some Spoon and NoTwist. I already love Wilco and ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead. Source Tags And Codes is controlled chaos at it's best.
Iron & Wine though. Just amazing.

I think Elliot Smith kinda sucks. With the exception of Roman Candle and Needle in the Hay, none of his songs grab me and definately don't drive me to tears.

Yeah, Elliot Smith gets me a little weepy at times of great sulking, but is still somewhat comforting in a way. Go figure.
Elliot Smith needs more interests outside of depression and suicide. Like puppies. And candy. And candy made of puppies. Wel, maybe not that last one...

Needle in the Hay is cold, man. The only reason I cry listening to Smith is if I'm already in a terrible situation, the song comes on, and I really just want to get it all over with. The song is somber, but it's also incredibly emotionless and dead...(shudder)

I was just listening to Needle in the Hay, and yes, that song gets to me.
