View Full Version : Nemo, Sinbad, and Disney's Marketing Tactics

I will never... NEVER be convinced that Disney isn't an evil empire controlling most of the media. They own such a massive portion of it either directly or indirectly.
But I have to say, the Finding Nemo mystique just astonishes me. This was such a crappy, awful, psychologically dubious, and inferior movie. I keep hearing people say things like "effects and cgi" but it just was NOT on the screen. Find me a child under the age of 7 who can quote you a single passage from it.
Yet Sinbad was marvellous and it's being dismissed. It got a harsher rating even though Nemo had an opening scene with the violent death of a parent and babies. I've noticed an almost embarrassing guilt on the faces of one or two critics who reviewed it tepidly and then plugged Nemo (can't remember the name of the twit who was on last night... he almost blushed).
It's really beginning to annoy me.
Makes me want to hate all Disney films but franly they do employ some amazing people even if they are a corrupt machine. Pirates of the Caribbean was astonishing. I wish I could have hated it.

It could be that all of America does not agree with you. Maybe the majority think that Finding Nemo was charming, original, and cute, whereas they have no interest in Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, and, if they did see it, found it to be cheesy, boring, and/or uninspired.
I'd bet if you asked everyone who has seen both films, over 50% would say they prefer Finding Nemo.
As for the rating, perhaps you failed to realize that Finding Nemo's opening sequence had IMPLIED violence.
Finally, to respond to critics blushing, that could just be your eyes, and I don't see a few critics "blushing" while promoting Finding Nemo to be hard evidence that Disney is evil.
i'd pick Finding Nemo any day...
but anywho, i'd say Finding Nemo appeals even more to adults than to children, yet it entertains the children in a visual way 'cause i find it's dialogue to be a bit complex. I don't see many adults going to see Sinbad at all, just kids. So many parents will pick Finding Nemo over Sinbad, even for repeated viewings. Plus Nemo has been gettin' a hell lota promotion from the Disney channel alone so there ya go.

Has either of you seen Sinbad?
I am not trying to make a point, but I was just wondering if there is a basis for your comparison.

My contempt for disney has nothing to do with Nemo. It instead has to do with their exploitation of their classics. They make horrible tv shows and sequels.
Then they laugh all the way to the bank.
Furthermore, their recent attempts at animation (Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet) has not had the same sparkle as the classic Disney.
Hopefully Pixar will eventually ditch Disney. Maybe that will help Disney get back into making quality work on their own.

Pixar only has 1 more movie in their contract, its "The Incredibles"
Anyway I think your comparison holds true for all movies. Generally people will go see big budget flicks more often then the small flick with real movie making skill involved.
Thats just the way it is.

But "Finding Nemo" was none of that. It was a cute, beautiful, and charming film for both the kids and adults. You may not have cared for it, but the majority disagree with you.

Granted that Finding Nemo was an excellent film..
Just, Disney really does suck some major ass as a film company.. There last GOOD animated film (that they did.. Nothing they distributed) was, I think, The Lion King...

I have, and it is only a mildly entertaining film that did not live up to all of it's potential, considering the voice cast and the legend it is based upon.
Also, I've noticed many people harshly cutting down Disney in here. Are you all seriously ready to forget 50+ years of excellence, focus on a slight dry spell, and call them a "suck ass film company?"

I thought that Tarzan and Mulan were both excellent. After that, their work has definitely waned in quality.
Although they have been showing signs of death in the 2D animation sector, their joint productions with Pixar have all been blockbusters. Each of them made over 150 million (that number is off the top of my head...I could be wrong).
So, although Disney has been making crap, they still have life. Which is why I say that I hope that Pixar ditches them. According to my roommate, an animation major, their relationship isn't the most healthy one. So, hopefully, the dissociation of their partnership may happen pretty soon.

I loved Sinbad. I hated Finding Nemo. I explained, in minute detail, why in both reviews.
It's been an absolute JOY to steer thinking parents with nice kids away from a film that is bad for small children.

Of course, we disagree and that's obvious. But I hasten to point out that the majority does not now, nor has it ever, had anything to do with what I like or dislike.
I keep hearing, again, about stuff that was supposed to be on the screen yet nobody can be specific. The round-table group to which I belong (film reviewers, critics, writers, etc) must have been a coincidentally huge minority because they agreed with me. Every one of us noted the same horrible errors in judgment.
What was great about the CGI? All I saw were fish and their shadows. The ocean didn't look real, nor did it look particularly fantastic in an unreal way. The human figures were shinier (and less impressive) than in Monsters, Inc. I live on a harbor. I know what the sea looks like. I keep waiting for somebody to point out what I missed but so far nobody seems to either remember it or know precisely what it was.
Which speaks volumes for me. Just my opinion.
