"Taps into a furious atavistic energy that reflects well on the filmmaker and his fully committed cast."
-- ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

"Unfolds with the creepy elegance and carefully calibrated precision of a Dario Argento horror film."
-- Kevin Thomas, LOS ANGELES TIMES

"There's no denying that May is simply NOT a film for all tastes, but if you like your genres stewed together and cooked into a film so sinfully wonderful that it defies description, I absolutely recommend you search this one out as soon as possible"
-- Scott Weinberg, EFILMCRITIC.COM

"In the same way that, say, Godzilla exploited nuclear terror...May exploits the insecurities of the urban dating scene."
-- Luke Y. Thompson, NEW TIMES

"An astonishingly distasteful movie, yet an altogether enjoyable one, if that's your thing."
-- Eric D. Snider, ERICDSNIDER.COM

"It's a humanistic entry in a most dehumanizing cycle, a film about dolls in which people really matter."
-- Bob Strauss, LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS

"The scorching horror of "Carrie" and the genre satisfying thrills of "Re-Animator".. the most unique horror movie of the year"
-- Clint Morris, MOVIEHOLE

"Exactly the kind of unexpected delight one hopes for every time the lights go down."
-- Mark Olsen, L.A. WEEKLY

"Shivery and seductive, May is a delicious little creepathon."
-- Tim Merrill, FILM THREAT

"Like Spacek, Bettis goes far beyond the lackluster acting you usually see in horror movies."
-- Chris Hewitt, ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS

"Ideal mixture of laughs, gross-out moments and just plain creepiness."
-- JoBlo, JOBLO'S MOVIE EMPORIUM

"Refreshing!"
-- Jesse Hassenger, FILMCRITIC.COM

"Written and directed by Lucky McKee with a real flair for the conventions of the genre."
-- Susan Green, BOXOFFICE MAGAZINE

"A refreshing, macabre tale."
-- Robert K. Elder, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

"Straddles the line between slasher film and sensitive character study with macabre and moving results."
-- Colin Covert, MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE

"May has you entranced in a humorous, slighty freaky affair that has no qualms on raising the stakes after establishing a character we care about deeply."
-- Erik Childress, EFILMCRITIC.COM

"[Bettis] has a smoldering, humorless intensity that's unnerving."
-- Mary Brennan, SEATTLE TIMES

"Until the mayhem takes over, May is a spunky little low-budget horror movie that knows its antecedents and conventions and tries to do them justice while keeping its tongue firmly planted in its cheek."
-- Marjorie Baumgarten, AUSTIN CHRONICLE

"Lowdown genre fun, a film that nearly makes up in slacker wit and high-spirited gore what it lacks in budget and elegance."
-- Ty Burr, BOSTON GLOBE

"A horror film and something more and deeper, something disturbing and oddly moving."
-- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you probably already know that I'm DYING to see MAY. Nothing so far this year has gotten me as excited as MAY, and I'm kind of doubting anything will get me THIS excited. I'm friggin' obsessed with this movie. I've been waiting for this week for so long. Definitely a blind buy! I know I'll love it, and if I don't, I'll watch it until I do ;). I hardly ever make blind buys, but this movie is a different story. I've heard great things about it, plus, it stars the adorable Anna Faris. Nothing will get in the way of me and my MAY this week. It's MINE! :D I think it's going to be one of the best films of the year! Right now, it's my most anticipated DVD release of the year. This is my kind of movie all the way!

The Hitcher was really good, and even though I highly doubt The Hitcher 2 will even come close to being as good, I still can't help but want to see it. I plan on renting this one Tuesday.

Shanghai Knights looks better than the first one. I will give it a rent.

Laurel Canyon sounded good. It's another rental.

I don't know what's wrong with me, but for some reason I actually plan on checking out Pinocchio. It looks weird and stupid, yet I'll probably give it a chance.

Gods & Generals looks so incredibly boring that it makes me yawn just thinking about it. I think I can safely say that I will never willingly see it. I've heard a lot of bad things about. But I do think it could be a guaranteed cure for insomnia.

I still also need to check out: Basic, Biker Boyz, Bartleby, Bug, and The Real Cancun.

WHAT WILL YOU RENT/BUY???

Buy:

Shanghai Knights

Rent:

Gods and Generals (I'm a sucker for war movies even if it is almost four hours long!)

Laurel Canyon ( I LOVE Kate Beckinsale and Frances McDormand is an awesome actress too!)

That's it for me.

I'll buy May 9/10 or A-

Rent The Hitcher 2

Rent Pinocciho, it's suppost to be much darker.

Hmm... from all the films being released next week, I've only seen "Shanghai Knights". A decent and entertaining sequel it was, but I don't know if I'll be purchasing it on DVD.

Anyway, as far as rentals go, I'll be giving "Gods & Generals", "Laurel Canyon", "May", and perhaps even the dreadful-looking "Pinocchio" a look.

I'm most looking forward to "Gods & Generals", though. I regret not seeing the film in the theaters. But, that wasn't my fault, my theater only played it for a week...

I will definitely buy Shanghai Knights, as it is every bit as funny as the first. Good swordfight in it, too.

Maybe rent Gods and Generals.

Don't even want to go NEAR Pinocchio.

Well... since I already own May... I'll still buy it, cause I've only got the DVD screener. :D

Shanghai Knights I'll watch, cause the first one didn't suck, and it's Jackie Chan... more importantly, it's Jackie, in an American movie, NOT co-starring Chris Fucker.

You wanna see MAY, Mike? Really? Funny, never knew...Next you'll tell me you really liked KISSING JESSICA STEIN...:D

Most likely, I'll rent GODS AND GENERALS and PINOCCHIO from the store, and I already have MAY and THE HITCHER II (for curiosity's sake) at the top of my Netflix queue.

Shanghai Knights- I saw it in theaters.... It was much better than I expected it to be. I'll definitely rent it.
May- I'll rent it, although I'm not expecting much from it. It doesn't really seem like my type of movie. If it weren't for Mike, I doubt I'd even rent it. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly suprised by it.

Anyhoo, I won't even be renting any new releases for a few weeks because I still need to catch up on some older movies so it'll be a while before I see these two.

Shanghai Knights-7/10...will buy.
Gods & Generals-7/10...might buy.
May...will rent because I'm down for some good psychological horror and because Mike raves about it(though I thought you saw it already dude) and Ebert liked it.

No, I haven't yet. I've just been obsessed with it ever since I first heard about it last summer. It's one of those movies that I just "know" I'm going to love. People say you can't judge a movie before you see it, but sometimes you just "know."

I can't wait to check it out!

Eve of Destruction (1991)-my goodness I recall seeing this movie. I would compare this to the Terminator. But instead of Ahnuld its a female like i the movie Terminator 3. Movie starred I believe Gregory Hines.

Laurel Canyon (2002)-I would mind seeing this movie. It has Christian Bale (yum)

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985)
This is a pretty decent movie. I saw this on HBO years ago. Movie stars Fred Ward.

Revenge of the Ninja (1983)
The 80's brought a few ninja themed movies and this was one of em. Kinda cheesy as I remember seeing back then but might be a worthy rental from your local video store if they plan to stock this.

Shanghai Knights (2003)
I love Jackie and managed to catch this went it came out in December. I liked it. Usual Jackie Chan & Owen Wilson movie. I think it was much better versus Shanghai Noon. I look foward in seeing it again.

Gods and Generals (2003) - This is honestly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Not only is it incredibly boring, bloated, and dragged out, but it features horrible acting, horrible direction, a terrible script with no character development whatsoever, and incredibly awful action scenes. I wish I could go on a world wide rampage and destroy ever single copy of this dvd. It is just that goddamn bad.

Laurel Canyon (2002) - A rental.

MAY (2003) - A rental.

Shanghai Knights (2003) - A purchase.

May - I'll rent because it looks interesting but maybe a little too offbeat for its own good? We'll see.

Gods and Generals - Saw this incredibly boring movie in theatres. I won't even consider renting it because it is perhaps the dullest movie that I have ever seen.

Shanghai Knights - I'll buy this because it was funny.

Laurel Canyon - Rent because it looks interesting.

Hitcher 2 - I'll rent because I found the original to be good enough.

I also still need to rent Dracula 2: Ascension among others.

I definitely saw that coming. Everything I really want to see or love, you don't want to see at all because I really want to see it or love it. If I thought MAY looked absolutely horrible and didn't ever want to see it, you'd probably want to see it more. No offense, but I personally don't think you should judge whether or not you want to see a movie based on my thoughts on it. I'm sure we agree on "some" movies. Just because I really want to see or love a movie, doesn't mean you're going to hate it for sure too. You should go by whether or not you think the movie looks good, and not by what I think.

Whatever though, that's just my opinion. If you want to decide what to watch by renting what I hate or don't want to see, and not renting what I love or really want to see, then it's up to you.

May - the trailer was very intriguing and I saw "Carrie" that stars the same actress on tv not too long ago and she was fantastic init so this is a definite rental.

The Hitcher 2 - Have not seen the first one...i'll check out the first one before this one.

Shanghai Knights - Initially when it first was released in theaters, I had no interest in it but after watching the promos again for the DVD release, I might check it out after all.

Laurel Canyon - I regret missing this one out when it came out in theaters and so I'm definitely renting this one. Heard many praises for Frances Mcdormand and my personal fav, Christian Bale. :D

Well, I wasn't really that interested in the movie anyways, but just capitalized on the trend of me wanting to rent movies you think look like crap, and vice versa. Though I am glad you changed your avatar, that KJS one was creeping me out with that smile :)

I figured you would be. I knew how much you hated it. I might change it to a MAY one next, and I'm sure if I do that one will bug the crap out of you too. Imagine having the cover art sized down to avatar size. That picture would be staring at you all of the time :D. If the KJS one with Jessica smiling bothered you, then a pale looking May would probably bug you just as much, if not more. I'm not doing it to bug you though, I'm doing it because I want to.

I didn't have a problem with it being a walking product placement, but that shit-eating grin the girl had on it bugged me. If it came down to the two, I'd rather see a pale girl on the avatar than what you had previously

I'll definitely be renting May and Laurel Canyon, in that order of preference. I want to check out Avanti! as well. Jack Lemmon and Billy Wilder both kick ass, especially together.

Gods & Generals looks kind of lame, and Shanghi Knights and Pinoochio look especially lame.

I'll have a look at May, for sure.

Also Gods and Generals. because even though it's supposed to be boring and its runtime is really, really excessive, I'm actually still interested in it because I'm a Civil War buff and especially because the book by Jeff Shaara is a terrific, engaging read.

Oh my god, I didn't even notice that was coming out on DVD Tuesday. I remember back when that come out on video. My mom was going to the video store and I told her to pick me up a movie. I had told her a couple of ones I wanted to see. Well, it turns out the ones I wanted were all out, so she rented me Theodore Rex. Needless to say, it sucked, and while I was mad at the time, I know she meant well and I feel bad for being mad. She didn't know...

She didn't know, she just thought I'd like it and since the other movies I wanted to see were out, she wanted to get me something. It's the thought that counts. Besides, I'm kind of a film snob compared to the rest of my family. They just don't know movies like I do, and that's ok. I love my mom though. She didn't have to get me anything really, but she did anyway. It was really nice of her. She didn't know I wouldn't like the movie.

Maybe if they are so kind and wonderful  to release it and i can return to Murcia for anything (like seing my exams' notes), i'll be able to see it.

Yeah, I just don't see it happening. At the very very least, I would probably end up just "liking" it. However, I think (pretty much know) I'll love it. I just don't see how it could fail me, at least not enough to make me hate it. It's my kind of movie all the way.

LAUREL CANYON: I'll definitely check this out sooner or later. Sounds cool!

The BILLY WILDER BOX SET looks sweet, but my bank account says "NO!"

Surprisingly, MAY is a STV release in the UK (same release date as in North America). I'll give this one a rental some time in spite of the mixed reviews. I just hope Mike gets his hands on the MAY DVD soon. He might go insane otherwise ;)

I hope I get it right away. Because I pre-ordered it from Deep Discount DVD, and I don't think they sent it out until like Thursday. I had ordered the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days DVD from them two weeks ago, and I just now got it yesterday. Most of the time they are pretty good at getting them to you right away, but there's been a couple of times that have taken longer than the 10 day maximum that they say. But this is different than How To Lose A Guy, this is a DVD I NEED. I have to have MAY right away. If I don't get it tomorrow then, I will start to panic... I will be going to the video store Tuesday, and I'm thinking I might just rent it, because I can't take any chances and I can't wait to see it. And in case it ends up taking about two weeks to get like the last DVD I ordered, then I will at least have seen it... I paid for the DVD already, and then on top of that would have to pay for a rental of a DVD I already purchased because my DVD wouldn't be here yet. Damn it! I hope I just get it, because if I didn't get it in the mail yet, there's no way I could pass it up at the video store. It would be a tough decision though, and one that I hope I won't have to make ;).

Oh wow, that would be really nice of you. I'd love to know what you thought.

P.S. You ruin this movie for me and they can make a prequel called MIKE, which is based on a true story of a guy who got the first spoiled for him and went on a killing spree for parts to make his own human doll. :D ;) ---I'm obviously just joking, so I hope nobody takes this seriously. No need to call in the feds, I wouldn't hurt a fly. ;)

Thanks Ed, it's nice to know that you'd have my back if something like this happened. However, yeah, you're right, Adam was just kidding. I know he wouldn't do that. Nobody likes having something ruined for them, yet some people actually enjoy purposely ruining things for other people. If someone were to do that to me with MAY, I would be so damn pissed. It wouldn't be funny, it would just be rude and cruel. Hmm, I'm starting to think maybe I shouldn't read my PM's until I see MAY, in case someone decides it would be funny to actually ruin it for me. I know Adam won't, but someone reading this thread could decide to do it. So I need to take precautions just in case. It doesn't hurt to be prepared for it. ;)

This is about this weeks new horror releases from Creature-Corner:

Coming July 15th, 2003

The Curse (1999)
Directed by Jacqueline Garry

Okay, I don't know why, but I'm pretty sure I've seen this on TV at some point...A woman with very bad PMS starts to believe that she might be a werewolf, but her friend just insists it's a "woman thing". Unfortunately all the men she dates end up dead, so there's a good chance she's right...Buy it here!

Demon Lover/Gargoyle Girls (2002)
Directed by Mike Tristano/Joe LaPenna

Oh God I wish Sub Rosa would stop making movies. Ugh. Our first masterpiece of horror cinema is about a repressed housewife who's sexy next door neighbor shows her how to have fantasies but unleashes a demon instead, and the second one concerns a man that inherits a ring that release two incredibly sexy gargoyles. Make sense to me. Buy it here!

The Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting (2003)
Directed by Louis Morneau

A sequel that is a few years too late. Should've been made when Rutger was in top-form, because you just can't replace him, even if it is Jake Busey. Now Howell's character is a mentally messed up officer of the law (makes sense) trying to make his way through Texas with his girlfriend (the delectable Kari Wuhrer), but Busey's got some other plans for them. Buy it here!

May (2003)
Directed by Lucky McKee

Best horror film of 2003? That's what a lot of people have said about this moody, beautiful tale of a lonely girl and her struggle to make friends. She's a bit off-center, however, and eventually takes the "make" part a bit too literally. Check out our review of it here to get the real scope of just how fantastic this movie is. Buy it here!

Yokai Monsters (1968)
Kimiyoshi Yasuda

Okay, a property owner schemes to tear down an apartment building and it's adjoining shrine and force the residents out. When the owner of the apartment is killed, a mysterious samurai appears and for some reason so do the titular creatures. Rubber suited monsters at their very peek, you may want to check this one out! Buy it here!

I'm really confused about THE CURSE. This had come out April 22nd already. I had to purchase it from www.amazon.com because neither of my video stores around here carried it. Hmm, maybe they will get it now. Is it getting a little bit bigger video release this week or something? Maybe most video stores didn't get it. Did anyone's video store here get the movie? Hmm, I just can't figure what's going on with this.

Anyway, here's Creature Corner's DVD review of MAY:

DVD: MAY

7.14.03
By The Inspector

Starring Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto and Anna Faris

Written and Directed by Lucky McKee

Released by Lions Gate

THE MOVIE:

FINALLY, my favorite film of 2003 reaches beyond the confines of promotional screeners and ultra-limited theatrical release to DVD.

"May" is a darkly funny, deeply disturbing and altogether moving experience, a unique film guaranteed to stick with you long after the end credits roll.

Written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Lucky McKee, "May" is the tragic tale of May Kennedy (the brilliant Angela Bettis) a socially-awkward and psychotically introverted Veterinary assistant. Suffering from a lazy-eye since childhood, young seamstress May can't seem to connect with anyone as a person, more obsessed with individually perfect "parts" than a dishonest whole.

May's tentative attempts at dating and romance lead to heartbreak and jealousy as she initially hooks up with film school drop-out and full-time mechanic Adam Stubbs (Jeremy Sisto), whose just-completed student film "Jack and Jill" is signature student-film / Grand Guignol knee-slapper. His obsession with all things Argento and horror films in general draws him to May, whose own weirdness and morbid outlook on life intrigues him.

When things get too weird for Adam, he rejects her and May's fragile mind begins to crack, literalized onscreen by the gradually cracking glass-case containing May's only friend, a creepy homemade doll named Suzie. Suzie was made by her overbearing Mom who once gave her a piece of advice that stuck, "If you can't find a friend, make one."

When a failed attempt at a lesbian relationship with co-worker Polly (Anna Faris) fairs no better and other attempts to fit in lead to disaster, May descends into insanity and revenge, finally choosing to follow her deranged Mother's advice in a sick variation on the "Frankenstein" story.

While gorehounds may be disappointed by the first two-thirds of the film, it's in the final act that the blood starts to flow and the gore starts to fly with abandon. While the film is definitely a first-rate black comedy, especially in the first hour, there lies, underneath it all, a very serious feeling of dread which percolates, right on the verge of boiling over.

Everything works: what's supposed to be funny is hysterical, what's meant to be shocking is truly frightening and what's supposed to be moving is lump-in-the-throat central. The final haunting scene in the film is so twisted, shocking and beautiful all at once that I now look forward to anything and everything Lucky McKee might do next.

PICTURE:

The DVD contains a crisp 1.85:1 letterbox transfer, enhanced for 16x9 widescreen televisions, better even than the print I saw at a local theater here in Los Angeles. English and Spanish subtitles are provided.

SOUND:

The 5.1 audio is excellent, showing-off a first-rate sound mix, wonderfully layering Jaye Barnes-Luckett's score into the atmosphere of the film like one of May's homemade quilts. Subtly cracking glass and ear-piercing screams are treated with equal respect.

EXTRAS:

I'd chalk this up to the "beggars can't be choosers" category, but the pickings are pretty slim here. The international trailer and two commentary tracks are all we get, along with a neat menu that follows a sewn garment from section to section in a similar style to the opening credits sequence.

Both commentaries mention deleted / alternate scenes that would've been great to see, but sadly we're not offered that opportunity. It's as if the DVD's producers think that having two separate commentary tracks where people simply "mention" these items is supposed to suffice.

Both commentary tracks suffer from too many participants. Angela Bettis is barely able to get a word in edgewise on her track which she shares with McKee, Director of Photography Steve Yedlin (also unable to say very much), Editor Chris Sivertson, two-scene day-player Bret Roberts ("Distraught Man in Vet") and the obnoxious and overly talkative Nichole Hiltz ("Ambrosia") who shows up late for the commentary and refuses to shut up for the remaining 60+ minutes. This may be the first commentary track to actually contain a harmonica solo.

The second track is actually the better of the two, even if McKee talks about the other commentary track and several stories / observances are repeated / reiterated. McKee is joined by composer Jaye Barnes-Luckett, Production Designer Leslie Keel, Editor Rian Johnson and a lisping craft-services guy named Benji. (Benji is actually the funniest participant, hearing him crack deadpan jokes about "Jeremy Thithto" and which foods were eaten to inspire certain performances is priceless.) This may be the first commentary track made with the participation of the craft services guy.

Both tracks clearly illustrate the tight bond these people formed to make this low-budget masterpiece and also go to great lengths to point out the filmic influences, artistic intentions, plot origins and the many continuity errors found in the film. ("Cassavettes once said, 'Continuity is for pussies.' " McKee at one point declares.) There are, however, several obvious "edits" in the commentary, specifically at points when future projects of McKee's come up for discussion. Lucky doesn't want us to know what he's up to next.

In conclusion, I'm glad I've got it. I'm glad I can start showing it to folks who might otherwise miss it. I'm glad that unsuspecting folks can pick it up out of curiosity on the video shelf.

I just want to have my cake and eat it too.

PACKAGING:

Standard video packaging, with the official poster art gracing the front cover and lame stills and an adequate plot-synopsis on the back. No booklet, just a thick-ass catalog for other Lions Gate titles.

Like the extras, a movie this good deserves better than this.

Mike, at the end May wakes up and says "Oh...it was all a dream."

;)

Kidding, of course. I'm still waiting to see this one as well. If it really ends like that, though, don't castrate me or anything. :) I just rented it (I thought it came out tomorrow, but I was happily wrong about that) and am about to watch.

DAMN IT Colin, why'd you have to ruin it for me ;). Just kidding, of course. It's obvious it won't end like that, because if it did I doubt the ending would have gotten as much praise as it did. If your ending happened, it would be a severe cop-out and piss a lot of people off.

Anyway, yes, it does come out tomorrow, but maybe your video store just put it out early?! Either, way, I hope you enjoy.

Here's a new review I just found for MAY. I didn't think it would be possible for me to get more excited about this movie, but this review managed to raise my excitement up a notch, even though it's already through the roof as it is. This review makes it sound fucking GREAT! I'm sure this film will be a real treat.

It has been over two years since I have written a review for a motion picture currently available on video and DVD. I mostly prefer to stick to critiquing movies currently in theaters, and very few others invigorate enough passion in me to feel the need to write about them. Something, however, must be said about debuting writer-director Lucky McKee's "May," which is finishing up its very limited theatrical release and will be released to DVD on July 15. "May" was a critical hit when it premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, and continued its acclaim via other fests and Internet word-of-mouth, but distributor Lion's Gate Films treated it like an ugly stepchild and gave it zero support. Shame on you, Lion's Gate! "May" is not only one of the most auspicious and original independent features in years—particularly for a first-time filmmaker—but it is one of the best films of 2003.

"May" is an incisive and touching character study about a young woman (Angela Bettis) whose childhood insecurities have carried over into adulthood. It is an often enormously funny comedy, in which the humor stems from both natural and offbeat human behavior and emotions. And then, finally, it takes a turn toward the grimmest recesses of the mind in the third act, when May's best friend—a sacred, eternally encased porcelain doll—is accidentally broken, and psychotic tendencies eventually alienate her from her only two living friends, the darkly sexy Adam (Jeremy Sisto) and wildly sensual co-worker Polly (Anna Faris). In a desperate attempt to rekindle the relationship she shared with her doll, May sets out to steal her favorite body parts from acquaintances and assemble a new life-size companion.

"May" is a horror film, and it is one of the most inventive and genuinely disturbing ones to come around in some time, at that, but it offers up another characteristic more rare for the genre. Through Lucky McKee's impassioned direction and alternately delicate and merciless writing, he gets the viewer to put a rooting interest into the story and characters, and then gets them to care. It is safe to say that May eventually careens over the deep end into madness, but through the careful set-up of her character, one understands why she does what she does in the third act, even if they can't necessarily relate to it. In May's eyes, the murder of imperfect human beings is only a means in which to make a perfect doll out of each person's best physical features. May is a sick individual, but she is almost as much of a victim as she is the villain. The viewer fears what she may do next, even as they empathize with her lonely plight.

Perhaps what writer-director Lucky McKee achieves most beautifully is his three-dimensional presentation of May within a film that offers almost no horror scenes in the first hour, yet still has the viewer recoiling in apprehension at every encounter May has with someone, simply out of fear of what she may be capable of doing. At one point, May goes to work with a group of blind children at a day care center, but it remains unclear if she has offered her services as a way of doing genuine good, or out of more devious reasons.

May is also deeply attracted to Adam, especially his hands, and she carries around a pack of cigarettes he once gave her as some sort of treasured entity. "Do you think I'm weird?" May asks Adam. "I like weird," horror movie buff Adam responds, but he follows that up later with, "not that weird," when she tries to reenact a scene from his latest student film, about cannibalism. Likewise, Polly is a free-spirited lesbian who shows a definite romantic interest in May, but unintentionally hurts her feelings when she later makes it clear that she doesn't practice monogamy.

In a talent-defining role that will hopefully do for her what 1976's "Carrie" did for Sissy Spacey, Angela Bettis (1999's "Girl, Interrupted") is note-perfect as the mousy and dangerous May. Bettis has made the wise decision to play up May's crumbling self-esteem and yearnings to fit in, rather than her villainy, which causes the proceedings to be all the more heartbreaking when she is driven mad. Meanwhile, May's doll, which she confides in and thinks of as a miniature version of herself, looms over the scenes even when it isn't present, the cracking of the glass it is encased in a chilling symbol of May's own fracturing sanity.

In key supporting roles, Jeremy Sisto (2003's "Wrong Turn") effectively chooses to play Adam with an attractive swagger he doesn't recognize, and a relatively normal personality that spars with May's more adventurous and pushy side, while Anna Faris (2002's "The Hot Chick") is a delight as the almost-as-offbeat Polly who, nonetheless, refuses to be faithful to May. Faris plays her last scene, especially, with a frightening vulnerability whose cumulative effect proves unshakable.

The climax of "May" is nearly unbearable in its assured intensity, and unforgettable in its unblinking views of psychological sickness, ruthless serial murder, and even darker possible areas of the human condition. The first full hour of exposition and set-up brilliantly paves the way for what finally occurs, even if you cannot quite believe director McKee's bravely grim and poignant intentions. The final image "May" cooks up is its most courageous. In the wrong hands, or in a more exploitative movie that had not allowed its audience to care about its main character, the shot may have inspired bad laughs. It does not, however, and McKee earns its subtle implications. Simply put, it is the most bone-chilling sequence of the year, infinitely more disturbing than anything in "House of 1000 Corpses," "Wrong Turn," "Identity," or "28 Days Later."

Lion's Gate may have ruined its chances of gaining a large following through theatrical bookings, but "May" has what it takes to become a cult phenomenon, much like 2001's initially overlooked but finally found "Donnie Darko." As a stirring drama, a marvelously developed character piece, a sly black comedy, a taut psychological thriller, and a gory, scary, no-holds-barred horror film, "May" is a new cinematic masterwork, a film with the ability to do all five things at once, or apart, with pitch-perfect grace. Don't let this one-of-a-kind experience pass you by.

It's nice to be excited about a movie but remember it's just a movie. You might be overhyping the movie to yourself to the point where NO movie would live up to the expectations you may have. And as a result you could end up disappointed. I'd watch out if I were you.

Then again I did the same thing for The Matrix Reloaded and although it wasn't the * * * * masterpiece I was hoping for, it was no disappointment :D

I just saw May and wow. I wasn't at all excited about it like Mike was, but this is definitely the best movie of 2003 so far. (I assume it counts as a 2003 movie, because even though it came out in festivals in 2002, it wasn't released in theaters until 2003.) A truly fascinating take on the usually far-too-familiar Frankenstein story, and JoBlo was absolutely right when he said it had elements of Ghost World and David Lynch in there. This movie had me fascinated all the way through; I really loved it. I guess Mike's enthusiasm wore off on me, maybe. :) The best part, though, are the great performances by Angela Bettis and Anna Faris. Both are truly outsanding here, with Ms. Faris standing out the most for me.

8.5/10, maybe higher.

YES!!! Colin, I love you right now! I was hoping you would love it, or at least like it. I was a little nervous though, because I wasn't sure what you would think, and I'd feel bad if someone hated it and had seen it just because of my enthusiasm. Thank god I don't have to worry about you hating me for getting you to see some terrible movie. ;) I couldn't be happier that you loved it!

Just a movie? And you call yourself a movie fan? You're an impostor! Who sent you? Who sent you? Any real movie fan knows there's no such thing as "just a movie." :D;)

Every year there's usually 1-3 movies that will get me EXTREMELY excited. This year, MAY is the first one, and who knows if another one will come along that can make me feel the way MAY does. I just can't help it, I don't know why this happens to me and I feel the way I do, but I just love movies, and sometimes, certain ones will make me VERY excited.

Without May, you still have the other 11 months to look forward to. ;)

I did enjoy MAY, but I don't think it's the greatest. It's somewhat derivative and not all that scary or creepy.

Haven't seen LAUREL CANYON, so I'll rent that. I like the cast. My friends tell me that GODS AND GENERALS is boring as hell. I'm not much of a history buff so I'll skip this one. HITCHER II? Yeah right. SHANGHAI KNIGHTS? SHANGHAI NOON was a pleasant surprise, but I'm getting a little tired of Jackie Chan's shtick. We'll see. To tell you the truth, what I'm in the mood for is a good old-fashioned porno flick.

I might also go and buy Shanghai Knights today or tomorrow. Likely tomorrow since today is a busy one for me.

I didn't want to go and rent MAY because then if I did, I would end up getting it in the mail tomorrow. But then if I didn't, I would end up not getting it in the mail tomorrow. Since I just couldn't wait and knowing that MAY was released out in the world on VHS/DVD today and I didn't have it was killing me. So I gave way to temptation and went to the video store to rent it. And to my surprise and disappointment, all of the copies were out. They had 5 copies on DVD and 4 on VHS, and all of them were out, even on VHS. On the bright side though, I'm glad people are checking it out. With all copies out, that would be at least 9 people that will be seeing it. Plus, maybe it was a sign anyway. Maybe the reason they were all out is because I'm going to get it in the mail tomorrow, so I don't need to rent it today. Things might have worked out for the best. Even if I won't get to see MAY today, at least I know other people around here will be, so that's comforting, knowing that people are seeing it and giving it some attention on video.

I did rent 4 other movies today though. I got:

THE HITCHER 2
SHANGHAI KNIGHTS
LAUREL CANYON
BASIC

I saw Laurel Canyon (7/10) and Shanghai Knights (5/10) in theaters. Also I've just rented May from Blockbuster and I was going to spend some time on the internet for awhile, but after reading this topic I want to see it much more. So I have to go watch it now.

Thank god I don't have to worry about you hating me for getting you to see some terrible movie. ;) I couldn't be happier that you loved it!

I would've seen it eventually anyway, since JoBlo and Arrow enjoyed it so much, but after seeing how excited you ere about it, it kind of made it a priority. :) But yeah, don't worry about it, because I really enjoyed it. I'm going to have to buy this one now.

I think you're right about May being your new Kissing Jessica Stein, by the way. That was another one I had to check out because of how much you liked it, and then I enjoyed it myself.

Anyway, I hope you aren't disappointed with May. I don't think you will be. Suck that you didn't get in the mail (though I think you're taking it a bit hard ;) ), but can't you rent it somewhere around you instead?

Well, I was just really disappointed I didn't get it. I think I'm ok now. But I better get it in the mail tomorrow. Until then, I plan on watching The Hitcher 2, and maybe something else as well tonight, to hold me over.

As for me being disappointed, I don't think I will be. I'm sure I'll love it. And even if I was a tad disappointed (although I don't see it happening), I would be watching it more than once so I'm sure it would grow on me even more. I have a feeling it's going to be one of those films that gets better and better with each viewing.

I just finished May. It was an interesting experience. I'd probably just give it a strong 8/10 for now, but I could definitely see it sinking into a 9.

Mike, I feel your pain.

Today I went to the Blockbuster near my work and saw May sitting on the shelves, not rented, and I was excited at the sight of the cover. They didnt have any copies to buy though so I left. After work I checked Target (long shot, but i had a gift card and Im always looking for a deal) and they didnt have it, went to the borders across the street, thought theyd have it (and presumed it would be 20+ bucks of my hard earned money but i was willing) and they didnt, it wasnt even on their little search computer thing. So tonight I ordered it off Amazon, itll be here in a WEEK. Ugh. It better come in time cuz our movie party is next thursday and May's the main attraction! (along with Finding Nemo, how my friend has it i dont know, but im excited for that as well). I think i can wait a week (and thats around the time my May soundtrack, FREE courtesy of May composer Jaye-Barnes-Luckett, should arrive so i guess I could look at it as "double the fun"...yeah right) but ill need lots of positve reviews of May from fellow schmoes to tide me over! if i cant be enjoying it, at least they can be.

...and so far May is the best film of 2003, and one of my personal all-time faves. Im not just bitchin about nothing here! oy, I want my May.

Mike- What would you do if Deep Discount DVD accidentally sent Femme Fatale instead of May? Also you couldn't get your money back or exchange the DVD. And you couldn't sell it to some other place. In the box that the DVD came in there was a man who forced you to sit down and watch Femme Fatale. He also burned all copies of May and he pulls out a gun and shoots you in the head after you are finished watching Femme Fatale.

Well Mike, that sucks. But don't worry, you'll see it someday and I'm sure you'll like it. The guy at my video store said that he wasn't sure about bringing MAY. But he said he could get me a copy for $29. I know!, but het¿y think about this: I live far far away from you guys and the movie hasn't been released here yet. So I don't think it's THAT expensive. I'm sure I'll buy MAY instead of The Ring, The Hours or Final Destination 2. I could rent those while I save the money for them. But I want to have MAY. And the only way I have to see it, is buying it for $29. And I'd have to wait like 2 weeks. But I'm sure I'll see it.

My god, that sucks! Why doesn't any place have this friggin' movie for sale? It seems like you have to buy it on the net if you want it. Thank god I already did. I usually never buy my DVD's in the store, since they are usually more expensive. I'm sorry you weren't able to get it right away. But look on the bright side, you were able to see it twice in theaters not too long ago, so you at least got to see it. However, if I had to wait two more weeks, I would go mad. Two weeks seems like an eternity to wait to see it.

Well, obviously, that would never happen. But if it did, the guy wouldn't even need to bother shooting me because I'd gladly shoot myself before sitting through that terrible piece of shit again. ;)

MAY

"I like weird... I like weird alot"

I just saw May. OMG!! This movie is disturbingly great. I had so much fun watching this movie I can't even describe it. It is VERY weird! and as Jeremy says in the movie "i like weird ALOT"!! Angela Bettis gives one of the strongest performances I've seen in a loooooong while. She's kinda like the 'carrie' of our age in this movie going to completely sweet to hell psycho!! It was like someone else inside of her on the second half, like a completely different character... I was stunned by her performance. This movie has "Cult Classic" written all over it. I bet my ass it will get a fanbase pretty soon and I'm almost sure of its video/dvd success. It has a witty and clever script and I just loved the editing because it kinda leaved you guessing even though you where almost sure what was gonna happen. The music is great also, and every song is perfectly placed. As I'm writing this I realize how much I really liked it. Jeremy Sisto and Anna Faris where very good, althought Anna wouldn't have been my first casting choice for this role. But don't get me wrong, she did very good, glad to see her in something different. Also, for some weird reason, this movie reminded me in a few parts and in some of the charaters of Secretary (9/10), although they end up being complete opposites. Let me see... I also liked the colors of the film, the mood they created it really complemented the music and the situations. The only thing I'd change of this movie is the pace, I would've liked it to move along a bit quiker but it didn't REALLY bother me because everything about it is visually interesting. You can watch it on mute and enjoy yourself doing so hehe. Well, that's it, I recomend it to anyone who likes this kind of movies. 9/10

May Review - Rented it and watched it today.

****Minor Spoilers****

Essentially a film about the troubles of loneliness and the trials and tribulations one girl (May, played by Angela Bettis) goes through in her quest for human affection before she eventually snaps as those around her dismiss her for the affection of others. May grows up with what seems like the perfect life. She has caring parents who just want the best for her along with a stable home life. The problem is that she was cursed with a condition known as “Lazy Eye” and therefore, she’s forced to wear an eye patch at all times; eventually switching to those cheap cardboard glasses one is given at the eye doctor after their pupils are dilated.

Forced into a secluded existence as she grows older, May meets people that seem to be nice, such as a man (A subdued Jeremy Sisto) whom with she experiences a short-term relationship and a overly friendly coworker (a ditzy Anna Faris) at the animal hospital where she’s employed. Aside from the aforementioned short-term relationship with Sisto, who breaks it off with her because she becomes even too weird for him after he was at first intrigued by her strange behavior. May also discovers rather quickly that her coworker is a lesbian and a flirty one at that. May is seduced by her lesbian friend, accepting at first, but becomes angry when she walks in on whom she thought cared about her having a fling with another person. This event spirals what was already a very fragile psyche completely out of control as a saying she was told as a child if you can’t find a friend, make one” becomes May’s motto for revenge. She then sets out to find the perfect body parts to construct a life-size doll in her continuing quest to find someone or something that cares about her.

May certainly has what would seem like an original premise for a horror film/character study. Unfortunately, what is done with the premise isn’t always interesting or entertaining. The main problem is that the resulting film plays like an updated version of Carrie (The film’s star, Angela Bettis, who often shines with moments of sheer acting brilliance, even played Carrie in a made-for TV remake of Carrie last year) with an element of Frankenstein thrown in for good measure. The only asset that sets May apart from Carrie is the addition of dark humor that is oftentimes funny in a strange sort of way. Otherwise though, you have the same basic elements as the Brian DePalma directed thriller. The unfortunate rehashing of the material is not what you think one would look for in such a film.

Director Lucky McKee does show some promise in many areas such as the fact that many moments of the film are very engagingly stylish and daring. Though he has yet to learn the fine art of pacing as what runs only 93 minutes drags far too much for a film that already is pretty short in comparison to many films out there. With some more tightening up of the events, the film would have been far more satisfying. As it is though, May is a sometimes-interesting film that lacks the punch and the thrills to become anything more than a cult classic at best.

3/5 or 6.5/10
