Phill Tippets directing this one, that could be a good thing since he is a good special fx guy, kinda like Stan Winston, heres the first pics available, cant really tell if it will be good or not. The quality of the pics is bad.
I like the premise though, this company of troopers is stranded on this planet called Angel Zulu wich is 100% of the time night. No sun. I know it sounds a lot like Pitch Black, but what the hell. Anyhows..the bugs show up, but after a while the troopers realized that their is something worse then bugs on this planet, my guess is it will be some kind of new alien creature, and since the films being directed by Phil Tippet, Im guessing its gonna be a cool looking beasty. I hope so anyways.
I think judging by low amount of publicity this flick has been getting that it will unfortunately be a straight to video release, and thats sad news to me since I think the first one is great.
Check out the pics over here! (http://www.moviehole.net/news.php?newsid=1935)

Most likely they`ll be added-in later with CGI.
spacemonkey - yes this will be straight-to-video, Tippet & co. already said so. This is because the first movie wasn`t so big a hit in theaters - frankly I never thought they`d make a sequel at all.
Though let`s face it, this sounds like it has very little to do with the original, story-wise.

Yeah I dont think it follows the storyline of the first. Basically it just takes some soldiers from "the federation" and puts them on an alien planet with new alien creatures, it could be called anything really. But it does have the "troopers" from the first film, and the bugs. So I guess it has some elements from the first.
I surprised the first one didnt make money, I saw it 3 times at the theater. I loved it.

I'm not really sure what to think about this one. I thought the first movie was great and loved the subsequent TV series, but im not sure how good it can be without the original characters. Id love to see an entire movie devoted to the adventures of the roughnecks or something like that. Seeing as its gonna be DTV I dont have very high hopes, but im hoping it'll surprise me.

I'm sorry guys, but I really did not like the 1rst one! I didn't even see the whole thing, I found it boring and unreal in every sense! I would give it a 3.5/10 for what I saw of it. Maybe I'll pick it up sometime and view the whole thing. I probably won't check this one out though... wow isn't it wierd that a movie like Sleepaway Camp made it to theaters but movies like Hellraiser: Hellseeker and this don't? Just a thought.

This one looks pretty sucky. What made the origional so great was its mix of satire, extreme violence, and balls to the wall war antics. And Jake Busey.
This one looks like Pitch Black mixed with Carnosaur 2. And no Jake Busey.
I have LOOOOOW expectations.

Given how many tidbits that have been given out over the past year I am susprised how much got missed.
The story revolves around group of troopers trapped in a base on a bug controled planet. Besides having to deal the the bugs that have them trapped they have to deal with the fact that the bugs have found a way to turn humans into bugs. There going for a claustrophobic parnoia theme were characters do not know who to trust because nobody knows who is still human and who is turning into a bug (a la The Thing).
The movie was planed as a dircet to video release before it was even produced.
The director is the head of the FX company for both films. He and the studio made a deal where in exchange for a cut rate on the FX for first film he would get to direct the second film.
Nobody from the first film was asked to be in the second.
I cant exactly remember when this film is set but I belive it is supposed to be after the first one. I think judding from that big gun (guessing its some sort of machine gun) Richard Burgi is holding in one photo), something they sorely needed and lacked in the first film, it probly takes place afterwards.

Exactly - this one looks to have none of that.
Sounds like just another low-budget "group of people trapped inside somewhere with a monster" movie with the "Starship Troopers" name slapped on it.
For the record, I loved the original.
Scythemantis
07-12-2003, 12:36 AM
Wait....there were "characters" in starship troopers? :P
I loved the bugs, as I love all monsters and insects and combinations of the two, but I found none of the human cast to be even the slightest bit interesting enough to remember their names, their faces, or anything they actually did. I don't even remember which ones died. They all felt like faceless monster fodder.
The one thing I didn't like was the kids buying Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches just to crush them. Did they really kill some for the movie? That's on the same level to me as killing anything else.

the planet is in perpetual darkness?
that sucks, a easy way to hide a low budget by hiding everything in dark.

When this was out in theaters, the original one that is, my sister who hates these types of sci-fi movies, reccomended it to me, and I had a blast.
I have a question, a while back when this was announced, they said that
Kelly Clarkson (American Idol) would have a role in it, is there any truth to that?
Even if the movie sucked, atleast her presence would lift it from mediocrity.
I agree though, that whole darkness thing, is more then likely just a tool to hide it's low budget, but since neither of
us have seen the movie yet, we may just be surprised, atleast I hope so.
The pictures look kinda grainy
though, eh?
I'll shush up now.

Ahh, I don't know about this one really. I enjoyed the original, great bug/monster movie with gore and action to boot. But I'm not really liking the pictures of the second movie and do we really need this one? I will probably be avoiding this one since I see no point in making this one.
They should of made it or even considered making it when the first one was in its prime (so to speak).
i liked the first movie, but i never understood why the military just didn't bomb the whole bug planet. no planet, no bugs.
dellamorte dellamore

After the fleet blasts the planet , MI mops up . They did bomb the planet , and then the mobile infantry would go in and clean up the remains .
But if you rmember when the troopers make it to Tango Urilla and eventually the Wiskey Outpost , they are ambushed by every bug in the bug colonies arsenal . Then when they escape , Johhny Rico tells Zander to get on the horn and tell the fleet to blast the planet . His request was denied because they wanted to find the Brain Bug , so they could studiy it and learn how the other bugs thought .
I'm not sure why they wouldn't just Nuke the planet after after their mission was accomplished , but i think it has something to do with The Federation wanting to expand to other planets eventually and colonize , so Nuclear Fallout would have prevented this .
Anyway , this sequel is looking way cheesy , it looks like a total failure in every way imaginable . Where is the battle for earth ? The all out assault by the bugs in response to the federation capturing the brain bug , where is Johhny Rico ( yes his perf was cheesy but Casper Van Diem was one of the best aspects of ST ) , where is Ace Levy , Carmen Ibanez , Private Zim , Carl Jenkins ? These characters were established to wonderful effect in the original , and it would have been great to have them expand on them , but no , they are simply discarded for some new , uninspired ones .
I just don't have any hope for this one , it's going to be an abomination , and oh yeah , the only director that could do this film justice , Paul Verhovven is no where to be found either , so to me this film is dead in the water . I know , the first didn't make a profit , so they have to go the straight to video route , it's no excuse for a lack of imagination , ambition , and cinematic vision . Plus , maybe eventually it did make a profit , when all the monies from it's international BO and DVD sales are counted .
It's going to be dreck , but i'm compelled to watch it anyway since the original is one of the best action / sci fi films ever made . And yes it's satirical tone seperates it from most mindless action films . And what action that is , the visual and creature FX are still some of the best i've seen in recent memory .

From what I understand, they tried to get Clancy Brown back as Zim but he wasn`t able to do it.

The first film is one of my favourite films. I doubt the second will live up to it. The pictures do look nice but low budget. I was hoping for massive battles but i doubt there will be any :(
I'm not going to put it down before I see it though. I like the genre so i will probably accept it anyway even if it is bad.

Hey this movies getting some preatty good reviews all around for a straight to video low budget sequel.
I know Arrow liked it even though it obviously didnt live up to the grandeur of the mega budgeted original.
Theres at least one actress back from the first film. Actress Brenda Strong who played Capt. Deladier on the first one. If you dont remember her shes the capt. of one of the Starships.
****Spoiler Ahead**********************************
The one who gets cut in half by a sliding door. Only thing is she plays a different character on this one. I would have preferred that they had brought back Dina Meyers the actress who played Dizzy Flores, I loved her character on the first film, and I hated it when she died. Her death scene is amazingly touching.
*****End of Spoiler**********************************
Anyhows we get Brenda Strong playing someother character.

considering sleepaway camp was released about 15-20 years before Hellseeker and this movie were even talked about, it isn't weird...15-20 years ago things were ALOT different in the world of movies, and this point your making right now is one of them...and on that note, I will add in how much I thought Hellseeker shoul'dve/could've went to the theaters...but then again I am like that with some other films as well, and it never happens, so what do I know, I guess I just liked the way 80s movies eras were rather then now.

In my humble opinion, Hellseeker had "straight-to-video" written all over it. Inferno, on the other hand, was a more polished production. It should've hit the silver screen, although I doubt that it would have been received well.

****MINOR SPOILERS****
I quite enjoyed Starship Troopers 2 for what it was....a low budget, shot on digital, straight to video/DVD movie.
The CG was extremely good for a low-budget production, however I felt the direction was off a few times, which annoyed me slightly as I expected better.
But anyhoo...decent enough action, lots of gore, and that blonde chick has one HOT bod and GORGEOUS tits (and all too willing to show 'em), so I wasn't complaining in that department.
As Arrow said in his review, the gun sounds pissed me off....in scenes of battle against the arachnids, the gun sounds really needed to be bassy and loud to give that extra "oomph" to the fights, but they were cack. The same with the opening - we're supposed to believe these guys are cowering from a huge bug attack...the commander is shouting to people "MOVE!! NOW!! NOW!!" etc, but the sound just isn't right...it doesn't FEEL as though he needs to shout to them above the noise of battle. That kind of thing can really take away from a film, and ST2 certainly dropped a notch because of it.
6.5/10 I'd say.

yeah,i wouldn't think or expect it to cash in much at all, in my fantasy movie games, I always selected Hellseeker to be released in 800-850 screens first weekend, see how it fared, then possibly push it up. Just the fact alone that it would be in theaters would be tight, and that would've meant more horror, I am one for more horror in theaters in my movie games ;)

I actually like LAWRENCE MONOSON, his roles in Friday the 13th:the Final Chapter,Last American Virgin and Mask. Were quite memorable, I just hated how his character got the shaft in last american virgin...It was a horrible ending! After helping the girl he secretly loved with her personal crisis, she goes back to the guy who got her pregnant and abandoned her in the 1st place!

Yeah I thought he was fantastic in FRIDAY THE 13th PART 4 and MASK too, but I don't even think THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN was released in the UK. Unless it disappeared from the video shops in the mid 80's I would've noticed it, but can't find it anywhere. Extremely desperate to see it. :(

It's a good film , i would recommend it as a rental , it's fun , it has good acting , and the visual fx are excellent .
Yeah , my biggest complaint was the sound of the Moritas , they had so much more of an impact when they sounded like Gatling Guns , but it's a minor quibble because i enjoyed everything else .
I think they did all they could with the budget they were given , and they exceeded my expectations . Give these guys a bigger budget , and i'm sure they could blow some people away .

I rented this the other night, and.....
Not too shabby!
Considering the miniscule budget they had to work with, I think the filmmakers did a pretty damn good job.
Now here`s the problem....
The original "Starship Troopers" had lots of slam-bang epic-scope action sequences.
The sequel has NONE of that.
And that`s going to piss people off.
But, if you can get past that, it`s really not a bad movie. Sure, it`s all been done before, but the writing is good (same writer as the original and "RoboCop"), the characters were fun and (mostly) memorable, and the movie LOOKED like it could`ve played in theaters. It really doesn`t look 'cheap' at all.
I liked how the building they hide-out in is sorta like a giant robot (when it`s defenses are activated), and the giant 'bug zappers' were cool too.
Cast does a good job. Richard Burgi is great as Dax, Brenda Strong is lots of fun as a no-bullshit older female officer (my favorite character), and Lawrence Monoson is also good in a fairly challenging role. Also, the chick who plays 'Sandy' is a real cutie!
Oh and the younger female lead was good (forget her name).
It also has a good, professional-sounding music score performed by a full orchestra, instead of some cheapo electronic score.
Oh, and the sequel DOES retain some of the original`s anti-war sentiment. In particular I liked when Dax warns the young recruit that "officers are there to get you killed".

Glad to see some people are enjoying this , maybe as much as i did , it really is a good film , just try not to compare it to the first one and it will prob be that much better .
I know some people are saying this one has the same anti war message , and to a certain degree it does , although the " hero " angle is handled more seriously , and it's somewhat glorified , not at all like the first where PV was mocking any sort of chivalry in the most sadistic manner ( even though i feel as if he actually honored the military mindset in spite of himself ) . I understand it's only a B movie , but i couldn't help but get caught up in the crisis of faith Dax experienced when he realized his responsability to his fellow Troopers is more important than his misgivings about how the federation has treated him .
Come to think of it , almost everyone had a crisis of faith in this film , and the main characters all exhibited a strong sense of responsability with regards to their duties , i like that part of the narrative .
The lead in this film is a huge upgrade over Casper Van Diem ( you gotta love em' though , he's still great as Johhny Rico ) , and i found it hard to believe someone could make a role such as this seem honorable , terrific job by this Burgi guy .
So , i don't see this as anti war , at least not entirely , and it doesn't particulary glamourize it , just showing that sometimes maybe you may have to .
Then again , maybe i'm taking it a little too seriously , because it's one cool ass sci fi / drama / action film , the more i think about it , the more i realize just how excellent it really is . And the bugs are still menacing as all hell , there is a sequence when they surround the compound in preperation for an assault , that is great , and very suspenseful . Just wish they were used a bit more , in addition to the other arachnids that were in the first .
