I noticed you guys talk a lot about rock and all that, but hip hop or R&B (or even pop) isn't mentioned much in this forum. I decided that I'd just bring up the topic of Missy Elliott, who happens to be one of the most creative and innovative hip hop artists today. I love her music and every one of her singles, whether it be "Work It", "Gossip Folks", "Get Ur Freak On", "She's A Bitch" or her first single, "The Rain(Supa Dupa Fly)". I think she is one of the most experimental and unique artists in music, period.

i dislike rap and hip hop a lot. i guess i respect the artists for what they put up with and go through, but i don't see anything past that. as for missy, she just seems like all of the other female rappers out there.

I'm a big fan of Missy Elliott. She seems to be on of the very few hip hop/r & b artists who actually tries to be original and innovative with her music. She doesn't always succeed but I still love her music (Miss E.....so addictive is her best album) simply because its fun and fresh. My fave song has to be "Lick Shots" (hey you, why you frontiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin BRAH!). Although I also love "Bring the Pain" "Gossip Folk" "Work It" "Get ur freak on" "4 my people" "x-tasy" "mr. dj" "crazy feelings" "sock it 2 me" "izzy izzy ah". Some of these song titles do seem generic, and lets face it they are, but once theyre given a chance a superior hip hop star emerges.

From first glance, yes she does seem generic. But lyrically, I think she's a standout from other female rappers.

She still is chunky. Just less so than before.

As for her music, I can't stand it. Her recent videos I actually cannot stand to watch, I have to change the channel. She manages to do what not many can: make music that is completely unlistenable....her vocal style is so goddamn irritating.
GRR.

Me no like Missy.

I thought this was the "Music" forum.

Greb, I have to ask - why bother posting if that's all you're going to contribute? Seriously. At the very least, you could have given some insight as to why you don't like her music (and yes, it is music). But, instead, you not only discredit an entire genre of music, you insult those of us who enjoy it.

For the record, I like her music. I'm not a huge fan, seeing as how I've never even bought an album, but I do like her singles fairly well.

As far as being the most innovative female rapper out there - remember, MTV doesn't showcase all of rap music. Rap music is something that you really have to have an interest in, to even bother looking for the really good stuff. MTV rap (as I like to call it) is good, for what it is, butit doesn't compare to some of the true poetry that you can find, if you choose to dig deeper.

Ah, Missy's cool! And I'm happy that she lost weight. She looks better. Her music has a nice distinct sound to it that's just refreshing. Missy's risen from being the little abused girl who was molested daily by her sick cousin.

Because I don't like her "music", and because I don't like her dressing up pre-teen girls suggestively and prancing them across the screen in videos.

Enough "insight" for you, DF?

And, trust me, to people who can appreciate her work, and her type of music, that was an insult.

Hmmm...quoth_the_raven agrees with Grebdron...what a surprise...

Anyway, I don't mind her. She's very original and I admit some of her music is rather catchy. I'm not a huge rap/hip-hop fan but I'm always game for someone trying something new.

And after the awful, rough childhood she had, she deserves all of her success.

You feel insulted? Oops.

I don't expect you to like everything I do.

You shouldn't expect the same.

ok i am sick of defending this. the fact that me and greb agree a lot is purely down to the fact that we think a like. are you trying to tell me that there isnt a schmoe on here who doesnt share the majority of your opinions??

honestly, the day greb is wrong in something, i will tell him. at great length ;)

I don't care that you dislike her music, but the fact that you can discredit an entire genre of music, is offensive to me, as a fan of the genre. Not all rap, and hip-hop is what you see on MTV, or BET; some of it is very good. But, apparently, it isn't even music.

I didn't discredit an entire genre, DF. Just Missy Elliott.

I enjoy some rap. Eminem, Cypress Hill, etc.

I just dislike her.

Simple.

Excuse me, I just figure that when you put the word music in paranthesis, you were another of those people in this forum that genuinely don't believe that rap and R&B, and hip-hop count as music. My apologies, although you could have made it a little more clear after I said something in my first post.

DF, I don't dislike "all" of anything. The "music" in quotes was thread specific.

And I really do have a problem with her parading pre-pubescent girls around sexily.

I've only seen one video that she has made, so I can't comment on that, although it doesn't sound like something that would entertain me, either.

I think Missy Elliot is funny, but I'm not a fan of her music. Like I couldn't pop in a CD of hers and listen to it in my car. I'd probably listen to 1 or 2 songs for a laugh and then turn on the radio.

And this childish jabbing is really getting tired. If you find certain people's remarks annoying, why don't you just put them on "ignore" and move on?

Play NICELY folks.

Don't make me get the hose.

Me personally, I like Missy a HELL of a LOT...Greb, I know nothing of the pre-pubescent gals though...!?

Care to explain dude?

I don't know what song it is, but her most recent video (I think) has a bunch of middle-school aged looking schoolgirls dressed in the traditional catholic school garb dancing very suggestively. Like dry humping, crotch grabbing and such.

Distasteful, at the least.

I don't mind some rap stuff either, but I have to agree that calling stuff by Missy Elliot "music" is iffy. "Get Your Freak On" is ok, but the latest songs I've heard are awful: "Work It" and "Gossip Folk" I think.

It makes my ears bleed.

Or, you could just skip over all the "childish jabbing"! There is an idea. It was a misunderstanding; simple as that. Nothing to get upset about. I apologized, and it's done. I do, however, have to say that, having seen the video in question, that it wasn't as terribly suggestive as you seem to imply, Greb. But it wasn't necessary, either. Older performers could have found, I think.

Sure, they weren't poiting dildos at their crotches, or sucking on cucumbers, but it is suggestive dancing. And they are pre-teen girls.

Let them grow up on their own, first.

Please, can't we all get along before I develop a st-st-st-stutter?
I'm a nervous child and I swear to JC I'll run around on the spot. Okay? Right. Gimme attention!!!!!!

See what you guys have done? I'm running on the spot now. I'm a terrible red-headed step-child and it's all your fault.

BTW, Missy is pantaloons. Fuck knows about her videos, but after that song she did with George Michael and then Mel B, I tuned right the fuck out.

Oh, great. Now I am developing tourettes. Shame on you people...........
