Don't bother with individual songs. The Mats are great enough that you should be getting whole albums.

In descending order of greatness:

Let It Be
Pleased to Meet Me
Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash
All Shook Down
Tim
Hootenanny
Don't Tell A Soul

2 - "Here Comes A Regular"
3 - "Skyway"
4 - "Left Of The Dial"
5 - "Til We're Nude"

Don't forget to add Stink to that list of albums, it is early stuff that is decidedly more "punk" than their later efforts. Also, The Shit Hits the Fans is an enjoyable glimpse into early drunken Mats.

The Replacements are interesting. I relly like a lot of their stuff, but I don't like some of it. They have a diverse style. I tend to like some of their more driving, "rock" songs and dislike their "ballad-like" songs. With that in mind, here are my recommendations:

Songs:

I don't Know
Alex Chilton
I'll be you
Run it
Color Me Impressed
Kids Don't Follow
You Lose

"Sorry Ma, Forgot to take out the Trash" is one of my favorite albums. Every album they have is great though. I'm happy I had to chance to see them live a few times.
