I just saw this movie this evening. It is so unusual and beautiful, I thought I would see what everyone thought about it. How did you feel about the length? The basic story? Did you find it funny in parts?

I have no idea quite what reaction was intended to this little flick, so I want to hear all of your thoughts.

~OOH annie you saw it!

*high fives Annie hAll*

Alll right!

I love this movie. what makes it have an even greater impact on me is the fact they built and did everything the movie is about. Herzog was out there with the native trying to find a way to drag that giant boat over a mountain. Plus the movie is chock full of stories.

Some interesting facts:

The Native chief actually told Herzog the Natives would kill kinski for him if he wanted them too since they could not stand the man due to his raging fits.

In a fit of rage Kinski fired a gun into a tent filled with film crew and injured one of them.

The scene were the boat goes down the rapids. Herzog, kinski, and one of the filmers stayed on board to film it. needless to say they got the shit knocked out of them bouncing around through the rapids. The filmer was bleeding all over the place after the shot.

Plus just the fact they pulled a giant boat over a south American mountain puts me in awe.

This is the ultimate movie about one man dealing with his obsessions I'm so glad you liked it Annie!

I've reserved it for tonight, so I had my eyes closed whilst reading your post, Bowieee. :D

Looking forward to it!

I always turn to you, bowieee, for some good Fitzcarraldo trivia...you do know your stuff. :)

I watched it with my uncle, and we so much enjoyed the psychosis that flashed across Kinski's face in the role, we paused a couple of times to take photographs (of the TV, yes, we are that geeky).

Watching the trailer was funny, as well, since the translation referred to him as a "possessed dreamer". He was just a little bit off his rocker.

The film REEKS of originality and it's unlike any other movie I've ever seen...

I wouldn't have seen it by now if it weren't for bowieee loving it, actually,...so...I really should thank him :)

Annie if you want to see the insane relationship between herzog and kinski check out the herzog movie MY best fiend.. His tribute to Kinski after Kinski's death. It's just filled to the brim with utter madness. All the fitzcarraldo stuff I was talking about is in there.

I just bought the Anchor Bay Special Edition the other day and will give it another spin soon. It's been years that I watched it the last time but I remember being in absolute awe of it. I'll post my thoughts here as soon as I have refreshed my memory with the help of this neat DVD package. Herzog, Kinski, and Anchor Bay rock!!! :)

Completely UNIQUE flick...unlike anything I've ever seen before I must admit.

The story was inspiring, touching, madcap and very original. Fitz is an eccentric crackpot and no mistake...and I loved the drunken cook also. The part where the ship was gliding across the water to the sounds of the distant drums and the beautiful Caruso (sp?) was stand-out, the way the tunes blended and Kinski's utterly believable passion for the operatics.

I can't write about this flick without mentioning the scene in which the boat is hauled over the mountain...JESUS, Herzog has got a lot of bollocks.

I really enjoyed this film...it was a delight to watch from beginning to end...the beautiful scenery, the mad 'n' meaty characters, the dazzling cinematography and the gorgeous musak.

Plus, that COOL cat that got thrown out of the hammock, everybody say "awwwwwww"...I'm going to get me one of those little kitty's.

Thanks for "bigging up" Fitzcarraldo Bowieee. Like Ms. Hall, I NEVER would have checked this one out if it wasn't for your respect for all things Herzog.

I now have Aguirre and Woyzeck lined up for this coming weekend.

9/10

PS: I didn't realise his NAME was "Fitz"...that's MY bloody name...:)
